I should have taken the trash out yesterday evening.

The smell (though not very intense) bothered me so much that it somehow stuck in my nose/head and I dreamed about it. Rarely remember my dreams, but I felt this one very much: there was a huge compost/dung pile in our backyard. A man came and examined it, using a technical device to determine the smelliness of a thing 😆

I'm very sensitive to smells (good and bad ones), but I don't remember any other such dream.

@actuallyautistic Anyone ever tell you that you were being "too negative" or a "Debby downer" when stating facts about something? Just happened to me earlier with my family. In this case it was reasons why I prefer not to travel often (routine change haha). The whole time I was thinking, "but I'm not trying to be negative..."

Sci_Fi_FanGirl,
@Sci_Fi_FanGirl@hessen.social avatar

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic All the time.

People feel attacked when we point to possible problems. They think we're rejecting them as a person. We're communicating on the information track of the message, they are on the relationship track. They want us to be more diplomatic and nudge them in the intended direction. Like "I like that! To make it a success, we should maybe consider...". It's like speaking a foreign language with allistics.

Sci_Fi_FanGirl,
@Sci_Fi_FanGirl@hessen.social avatar

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic Someone asked me recently: "But if you hate people, why have you become a teacher?"

Needing alone-time doesn't mean AT ALL that I hate people. On the contrary even. I love people, I want to help and nurture them, I like having good conversations, I want people to be happy. But it also drains me completely to be around people. That's the thing they don't get.

Sci_Fi_FanGirl,
@Sci_Fi_FanGirl@hessen.social avatar

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic Exactly. I really wonder if allistic people don't ever experience this kind of overstimulation even though they like an activity. Probably not 🤷

Sci_Fi_FanGirl,
@Sci_Fi_FanGirl@hessen.social avatar

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic Nice that they gave a warning. I would have fled as well. But people actually seem to enjoy this sort of thing.

Talked to friend the other day. He said in his church they now use animated backgrounds on their lyrics slides. "Why would you do that? It's so distracting!" - "Because we can." 🙄

Sci_Fi_FanGirl,
@Sci_Fi_FanGirl@hessen.social avatar

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic Gladly my church isn't too much into this kind of "entertainment" either (fog machines, lights etc).

But it's increasingly challenging for me. It used to be a very small congregation and over the last three years we have grown considerably. Which is nice of course, but also a lot worse for me sensory wise. Sometimes I don't have enough spoons to go to church.

I enjoy singing together as an activity, but spiritually it's better for me to sing alone with my guitar.

Sci_Fi_FanGirl,
@Sci_Fi_FanGirl@hessen.social avatar

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic It's sad they don't listen to people's needs. Of course, you can never satisfy every need a 100% at the same time, but there could be some variety. There are so many wonderful pieces from different periods of time.

Sci_Fi_FanGirl,
@Sci_Fi_FanGirl@hessen.social avatar

@melindrea @chevalier26 @actuallyautistic Thank you! That's a very good example 🙂

Too many upcoming social events. Although most of it is rather positive, I already feel overwhelmed.

I fear not being able to accomplish everything I feel I need to do.

There will be huge gatherings and I dread sensory overload and meltdown.

I don't know when/how to clean the house the day (before) some friends are coming over.

I feel I haven't worked enough this weekend and don't know how to complete everything work-related on time.

Please: no advice, just sympathy.

@actuallyautistic Update: most of the events are over.

Friday was hard as I had a bad migraine all day but had to work a lot. Evening gathering was actually okay, but was extremely exhausted afterwards.

Saturday went okay. Even had some very good/important conversations during/after the event. Was able to complete my work tasks as well.

Today was quite good actually.

No meltdown, no shutdown. But very tired and jittery. Will rest now and recharge.

Question for fellow @actuallyautistic and @actuallyadhd neurodivergent folks:

How do you explain your ideas to neurotypicals?

I constantly struggle because my brain has made connections that are not obvious to others, and when I try to guide them through my thinking I confuse them with details or by skipping explanations that seem obvious to me but completely surprising to anyone else.

Frameworks, links, anything is appreciated!

Sci_Fi_FanGirl,
@Sci_Fi_FanGirl@hessen.social avatar

@mariyadelano @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd It's hard. I process bottom-up as well but I know that many people don't usually. So I try to see it from their perspective and start with what I think they know or can refer to. While walking them through "the process", I ask them questions to see if I need to explain anything.

Me: "Why wouldn't he? I would love that. Guess you just have to have the right person to do that."

K1: "True. And if a piece is missing and you're both searching for hours to find it - then you know it's true love."

Would any of you be interested in doing a weekly audio conference? I have organizer stTus on meetup could do audio and discuss how everyone is doing checkins, talking science, or what it’s like for you personally in the world coping ?
Perhaps zoom audio, no judgements safe spaces etc over the internet ? Discords etc

Sci_Fi_FanGirl,
@Sci_Fi_FanGirl@hessen.social avatar

@EVDHmn @actuallyautistic Interested.

Sci_Fi_FanGirl,
@Sci_Fi_FanGirl@hessen.social avatar

@EVDHmn @actuallyautistic Can't promise anything. Also considering the time lag (I'm in Germany). But we're also having a meetup with French speaking autistics and I enjoy this very much. Would be great to exchange with a few more.

Sci_Fi_FanGirl,
@Sci_Fi_FanGirl@hessen.social avatar

@EVDHmn @actuallyautistic yeah, more experienced peers sharing their wisdom would be great 🙂

The best we can do one day at a time - that's it. We're all figuring this out somehow along the way. Some days are better than others, sometimes everything's a mess.

What are the most autistic-friendly places (cities, countries, etc.) in the world to live?

@actuallyautistic

Sci_Fi_FanGirl,
@Sci_Fi_FanGirl@hessen.social avatar

@Cassandra @JeremyMallin As a German living in Germany I can confirm that culture wise it may be a bit easier here. We tend to be rather direct and honest. But Germany is also incredibly ableist, so any sign of "weakness" is bad.

Just watched the Autism From The Inside video about the SciShow episode.

Really great response video IMO. I've sent it as a reply to the We're Here email list too in the hopes it does make its way to the SciShow team and folks are listened to.

Video is here:

As I said, the realization that I'm autistic disn't lead to that much of an identity crisis. It's way more about starting to understand how my brain actually works. It's continuation of what I learned in therapy, partly using tools that I acquired there. Some of the aha moments have left me with an open mouth after saying "fuck" to myself.

My thinking is partly based on intuition bundles, as I like to call them. In fact, I think my intuition is very well developed. I understand many things, including scientific topics, by intuition. However, putting that understanding in words might be a real struggle. In science, that's not a good thing. This is partly behind my dislike of partaking in scientific debate.

I've started wondering whether relying on intuition is some sort of strategy my brain has developed. As it gathers lots of information and fails to filter the crucial bits, maybe it has started to create these association groupings, that is intuition bundles. I feel things as wholes but might not be able to verbalize them.

@actuallyautistic

Sci_Fi_FanGirl,
@Sci_Fi_FanGirl@hessen.social avatar

@LehtoriTuomo @actuallyautistic Hmm, I'm wondering: is it really intuition, or is it rather pattern recognition?

Autistics tend to process information in a bottom-up style: gather information, see many details, then piece it together.
