Two things are true:

There's been an explosion of really vile #antisemitism, some coming from pro-Palestinian protesters. It's terrifying.

Calls for a ceasefire and condemnation of Palestinian civilian deaths are being labeled antisemitism, even when they come from Jews. It's slanderous.

These things feed into each other.

It's a terrible time to be a pro-Palestinian, anti-occupation Jew. We're really getting hit from all sides right now.

wanderinglens,

@JoshuaHolland it's really something when my wife is being scolded that she's a "self-hating jew" by.... evangelical protestant christians

😒

KevinCarson1,

@wanderinglens @JoshuaHolland Sounds like the Gwyneth Paltrow types who trash Mexican-owned restaurants for being insufficiently "authentic." I guess if she quoted Bailey Smith ("God almighty does not hear the prayers of a Jew"), that would be OK.

@JoshuaHolland Here's a short handbook:

The statement "I condemn civilian deaths in Palestine" is antisemitic because it ignores deaths on the Israeli side.

The statement "I condemn deaths on both sides" is antisemitic because it says both sides (Israeli government and Hamas terrorists) are equals.

The statement "I condemn the vicious attacks of Hamas on Israeli civilians and mourn the losses of civilian lives in the following war" is acceptable.

squared99,

@JoshuaHolland

Thank you. I mean it.

I'm struggling to understand how the world can allow what is happening in Gaza to continue. It's shaken my core.

Oct 7th was terrorism. It was meant to incite a reaction of fear, of terror. Terrorism.

The reaction of the Israeli government has been indiscriminate slaughter. I don't see precision. I see collective punishment. Innocents paying the price and a world that wants me to accept it.

Posts from people such as yourself help me feel I'm not crazy.

@squared99 See you have a very one sided world view that blames the loss of Palestinian civilian lives solely on Israel while conveniently ignoring that it is Hamas who is using their own civilians and civilian infrastructure like hospitals as "shields" and places to perform their terrorism out.

And that is unacceptable.

@JoshuaHolland

@juliank@mastodon.social avatar

@squared99 If Israeli government wanted indiscriminate slaughter as you put it, they could have just leveled the entire Gaza strip.

Seriously that's not a problem, no need for ground troops, no need for targeted attacks, they have the fire power to just level the whole strip.

@JoshuaHolland I’m a not-Jewish atheist who identifies as a socialist, and I’m wary about joining the calls for a ceasefire and condemning the atrocious crimes against innocent Palestinian civilians by the Israeli state.

Why? Because as an atheist and socialist, I’m automatically assumed to be not just antisemitic, but also aligned with Russia. Any sympathy I might normally have for the rights of the Palestinian people to armed resistance against systematic oppression and occupation by the IDF, is badly damaged by Hamas attacks on civilians, but it’s completely reversed by pro-Palestinian protests that don’t actively exclude antisemitic and fascist elements from affiliating with them. I simply can’t join with that, and the causes I care about would be damaged if they were seen to be supported by someone assumed to be antisemitic and aligned with Russia.

I don’t see how this war doesn’t end up tearing asunder basically all the various left and center-left coalitions.

JoshuaHolland,
@JoshuaHolland@mastodon.social avatar

@janxdevil I don't understand how the rest of what you wrote leads you to be wary of condemning the killing of civilians. You can't set the bar lower than that.

theexplorographer,

@JoshuaHolland You mean it's a terrible time to be an honest caring person who understands that people just want to live their lives. So, so, sad. Another dark mark on human history.

@JoshuaHolland I wish we could all agree that civilian deaths are a bad thing.

ProjectFearlessness,
ahau,

@JoshuaHolland Seriously, they are Anti-Israel, not Anti-Jews. Why do you think it is terrifying? There are Liberal Jews and Orthodox Jews participating in almost all the pro-Palestinian protests. They are Anti-Judeo-Nazism or anti-ultra-zionism. Only far right zionist colonists should worry. LOL #JudeoNazism #JudeoNazis #zionism #farright #Nazis #Nazism #Fascism #Fascist

@ahau @JoshuaHolland does protesting the current Israeli government’s actions in Gaza make you anti-Israel?

I opposed the U.S. invasion of Iraq, and I don’t think that made me anti-American. Indeed, I believed (and still believe) America’s interests were poorly served by that invasion.

Likewise, I doubt killing thousands of civilians in Gaza is going to help Israel’s security in the long run. And I don't think US providing military aid to help Israel do so is in the US's interest either.

    @cakeisnotalie @JoshuaHolland Good. Keep worrying. LOL I don't stand with Israel. I condemn the genocide. I don't need to worry. I will be able to sleep well. ✌️
