@haldecraft in case you are new here, it usually takes a couple of days until your network has grown enough to start to become useful. And using #hashtags and search for them help, but when I look at your post, you already figured that out. 😉
@markusl Thank you so much. I appreciate this; I'm already feeling more connection in the last few hours than I have since I joined! And I've learned a lot that I didn't really know, about how it works here.
@haldecraft Mastodon.social is a huge server, but it's been defederated by a number of others due to what's seen as lax moderation policies, among other things, in the past. It will be cut off even further soon due to their choice to federate with #Threads, #Meta's new #Twitter alternative.
All this to say, sorry you're having a hard time finding folks, but I'm more than willing to help you try. May I ask what other instances you've been on in the past?
@Matt_McMahon@haldecraft Your instance, mstdn.social, doesn't seem to be the same as the mastodon.social instance. That said, I've always found mindly.social to be a warm and upbeat place.
@JesseF8693 I am still where I landed when I signed up originally; I saw that we could move but there were so many to choose from so I stayed here, and tried to find people. But I've found more people I have things in common with in the last couple hours than since I joined, so I'm much happier and figuring things out now!
@AudraTran Federations may be shifting but people can take their followers to a new instance with relative ease if they're so inclined to. I personally don't think #Meta should be given any leeway here, we've seen how destructive their policies have been in the past, how hurtful they have been.

@AudraTran And since they are launching what amounts to a #Twitter clone, to replace a social network that leans heavily to the right these days, which allows for so much hate speech, I fear that will be a large influence on #Threads. Made even worse by the fact that it will likely have hundreds of millions of users very quickly, without the ability to scale up their moderation accordingly.

Given #Instagram/#Facebook have an active user base of over a billion people and #Twitter only has an active base of 140 million, that opens the door for a lot more harassment to take place than ever happened on Twitter.

@AudraTran I wouldn't count on that. Remember there's the "Own the libs" segment of that population where that's what they care about the most, so they'll go over there just to be spiteful.
@AmiW I honestly wasn't sure what the etiquette was for following people, so I'd been scrolling through explore, trying to find hashtags... but my little pre-coffee scream into the void has been heard far and wide, and I'm finding there's so much more here than I thought!
@haldecraft You have to keep in mind that without the platform pushing people's posts to others, growth is dependent on the number of people who follow you and boost your posts.
The best way to grow is by replying to other people's posts about the topics you want to attract.
Make sure you look at the 'global' threads and reply to people on other servers as well as your local one.
@haldecraft And if it is any consolation, the hashtags worked to show up on my feed! Seconding the recommendation to follow hashtags, that's really helped me see interesting things outside of my own instance.
Type a hashtagged word of interest in the search bar. Like #ceramics
Click on one of the hashtagged words in the results.
Above the list of your results, next to the Back button you'll see an icon -- a head and a plus sign. Click on that. Congrats, you just followed that hashtag.
