has no shame. It isn’t just that he refuses to recuse himself from cases before the Supreme Court — it’s his arrogant assertion that he can assess how a “reasonable person” would view his involvement. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2024/05/29/justice-alito-rejects-recuse-flags-jan-6-cases/ 73895356007/ 1/

Since Alito gets to make the recusal decision, he gets to define "reasonable person", which would be someone who agrees with his opinions.

What is the best explanation you’ve heard for 1 not being a prime number? For me it’s “because it breaks everything in my programs since the loops won’t terminate” but that’s obtuse. “Because the God of math decrees it so!” is compelling, but shallow.

“it can only be divided by 1 distinct number” is contrived.

1 “feels” prime— it has the fewest factors. (Primeness being about NOT having factors) ruling it out for having too few? eh.

“it’s the zero of multiplication” is better… thoughts?

weaselx86,
@weaselx86@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird

There is probably a history of mathematical papers arguing about whether 1 should be considered to be a prime number...

"In the mid-18th century Christian Goldbach listed 1 as prime in his correspondence with Leonhard Euler; however, Euler himself did not consider 1 to be prime. In the 19th century many mathematicians still considered 1 to be prime, and lists of primes that included 1 continued to be published as recently as 1956."

I can't emphasis enough the point that exp(t)/(exp(t) + exp((1-epsilon)t)) ~ 1 for large t and any positive epsilon.

This may seem obscure but it's the problem with "capitalism" as we know it. Even in an infinite world where wealth grows exponentially forever, eventually the person with the epsilon larger growth rate than everyone else owns everything.

Add in political power and finite resources and it just happens faster.

weaselx86,
@weaselx86@mastodon.social avatar

@dlakelan

Extreme wealth concentration is an inherent property of a capitalistic system.

The wealthier participant in a transaction has an inherent advantage in risk-tolerance and greater ability to hold out for a better deal.

Absent sufficiently progressive taxation to counteract it, the inherent advantage of the wealthier participant in every transaction leads to a positive feedback loop of wealth accumulation and concentration with mathematical inevitability.

"I paid off MY #student #loans myself! Why should these kids get theirs #forgiven?"

Dude. You had $3,000 in student loans. Some of "these kids" graduated from college $70,000 in debt for the same degree you got, now they're earning half as much as you did for a comparable job and they have no expectation of any retirement benefits, and they've been paying on that loan for fifteen years and owe more on it now than they did when they started paying it. They are being ruthlessly exploited by student loan management companies whose entire business model is based upon gouging people who are struggling to pay off their student loans.

Would it fucking KILL YOU to show a little compassion and understanding?

If you're going to post a link that includes no clue as to what it is about -- PLEASE also include some text explaining what it is. Clicking on bare links that give no indication as to what the blazes they are about is really suboptimal. This includes links to other Mastodon posts and many other kinds of sites. Text like "Wow!" or "Interesting!" or similar really aren't that useful in this regard. Thanks!

weaselx86,
@weaselx86@mastodon.social avatar

@lauren

On some links the browser pulls in an image and headline text from the link target, providing the sort of preview information you seek. But on some links this does not happen automatically. I have found that if I click the "bookmark" button at the bottom of the post, it usually then pulls the preview in where I can see it.

(In making that happen I click the "bookmark" button a second time to re-remove it from my bookmarks)

(Using firefox browser)

weaselx86,
@weaselx86@mastodon.social avatar

@lauren

People should not have to work harder to see the preview -- the browser should display it automatically. Sometimes it does, but often it doesn't. That sounds like a bug to me, but maybe it's intentional as a way to conserve bandwidth.

The "bug" behavior could be dependent on what client (browser or app) you run. I offered the bit about clicking the "bookmarks" button as a workaround to the missing preview. Adding redundant additional text along with the link is another workaround.

Also, even if you someday were to become Canadian citizens, it's legal to keep US citizenship and be dual citizens of both USA and Canada.

https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/how-to-get-dual-citizenship-in-the-united-states-and-canada.html

And you probably already know that as a US citizen you're still entitled to vote in US elections when living outside the country.

The downside is that as a US citizen you have to pay US federal income tax even when living abroad. But you do get to claim a credit against taxes you pay to the foreign government.
