There's a point in every engineer's life when they get sick of bending the legs on EPROMs and buy one of these.

on a scale of one to kevin mitnick I wonder how mad the government would get at me if I put an NTSC TV transmitter in my car

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@kmccoy @bittner @foone generally at least with news and production crews they can go through the local Society of Broadcast Engineers chapter for coordination. One of my coworkers handles it for the Sacramento area. The coordination isn't mandatory.... but it greatly increases the chances of, you know, your stuff working

@foone the tricky part might be finding a vacant channel unless you're running it down on a VHF channel... here in Sac I think there's really only one vacant UHF channel, and everyone has their wireless mics on it as a result. (Thankfully you can get a LOT of wireless mics into 6 megacycles of spectrum.)

VHF low band (2-6) would be a trip. If channel 6 is vacant and you use it the audio carrier can be heard on many FM radios. ATSC3 provides a special Franken-FM feature to allow this on ch6

I'm apparently not the only one who thinks #android camera's default white balance is way too cold, no permanent way to fix it???? and the latest camera app update hid it behind multiple taps

Really don't want to have to use a different camera app for it but it's really bad.

This is soot, who is orange not green, in a dark, not light, purple chair

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@SirTapTap what color is the couch? I get that a lot when taking pictures of my kitty bean and I think it's because the camera gets confused by my pink Hello Kitty blanket.

("pink Hello Kitty blanket" sounds redundant, but I'm assuming there are less common examples of ones that aren't pink?)

it does disappoint me that Open Camera also has storage issues on my Pixel 5A

it has been ZERO DAYS since I have installed Windows 95

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@foone something I have wondered about for years: I thought I saw a mention somewhere about that screen being a bitmap image, but I distinctly remember having it glitch out on a really early version of Windows 95 and some extra text displayed over it in a really wide pixelated font. It said something like
whenLevel(
keyNumber

I have never seen this happen again since but it always suggested to me that this was just text being rendered in a funky low res font. Was that the case?

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@foone I wonder if that might have been another program that was still running at the time that doodled on top of it. It was really odd and I never saw it happen again after that.

The Aliexpress vendor who cancelled my order for 2200K (color temp) LEDs has uncancelled it and now they are en route to my house from China.

I guess I'm getting them after all, though they only have two reviews, and one says they are a nice warm orangey yellow and the other says the color is nothing like what they are supposed to be, so I'm curious what they will look like

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@MLE_online oh that's a new one to me! I have one of the 4885's which is that same shape but has a digital AM/FM tuner. I already spotted that this one would have to be substantially weird to use: it's presumably using the same wide FM detector it'd use for TV audio for narrowband FM NOAA weather! You'd have to turn the volume way up and it may just go BLAAARGGGHH from a stronger signal capturing the receiver. This thing is design by clueless committee and I love it.

A dishwasher tip specifically for those of you in North America:

Your dishwasher expects to be filled with hot water. If it takes more than 15 seconds for the water at your kitchen tap to get hot, your dishwasher may be washing with cold water for much of its cycle.

If your dishwasher seems kinda meh, try running the kitchen tap until it's proper hot and steamy before you start a wash cycle. It may make a huge difference.

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@alda @chloeraccoon @rail @TechConnectify ok I'm kinda intrigued by having municipal hot water - what is the source?

I have always thought ideally I'd want to see the nuclear power plants we really need more of feed a heat exchanger system that supplies municipal hot water, instead of just dumping the waste heat to cooling towers or ground/sea water

Bad idea: a modernized s-100 computer built around pci-e slots

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@foone I swear I once remember having some motherboard that supported a special variant of AGP for which I never saw a single GPU that matched it - the connector was extra long and had a bunch of power-only pins beyond the normal AGP slot. It was sufficiently weird.

Watch as every manufacturer decides to put the AGPe pins in a different position

After spending nearly an hour trying to get DLNA or Plex working, I have decided that the only reliable way to make video appear on a TV screen is to record it to a VHS tape

@foone that first picture looks like what I call Rainbow Death Snow when it appears on HD-SDI video sources that have Become Unhappy

Feed it to a Harmonic Electra X encoder and you receive... a Harmonic Electra X non-encoder, until you reboot it and are subjected to the longest five minutes of your entire life as you're dead in the water and off air

vxo,

@North that reminds me way too much of a capacitor inside the connector bodge you have to do if you are using Sennheiser lav mics on Lectrosonics wireless packs. It has to fit INSIDE the TA5F. Not recommended.

I hate this. my eyes are already hurting just thinking of the tiny, tiny text

vxo,
@vxo@digipres.club avatar

@foone oh I've run into one weirder: we have some little field monitors around at work (ikam brand or--? I forget) where they have HDMI inputs that will accept 4K video and downscale it to whatever the small 7" or so panel actually is

Welcome to Fly Dirt Console.
