I just woke up this morning to @tuckerm buying both of my releases. Completely unexpected and also very thankful for this.

@shoq @tuckerm Wouldn't groups be echo-chambers?

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@1nd33d @shoq They could be, but I don't think it would be any worse than people mainly talking to their own followers. I'm also interested in groups for hobbies more than ideologies. I see it as a way of easily sending a message to a group of people that have shown interest in a subject by subscribing to the group.

Groups also have an advantage over hashtags in that by messaging the group everyone will see your message right away. With hashtags, other people's home servers may not see you.

shoq, to random
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

Said privately. But I have no secrets⏵

I am starting to not like this activity much anymore. People confuse “having followers” with being part of a “community.” It’s narcissistic in nature, as we’d always assumed. We just thought it had benefits, too. I’m not sure if it does anymore.

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@shoq This is one reason why I hope groups start to get more use on Mastodon. You can post to a group instead of having to amass followers.

(And part of me hates that I said that, because it sounds like I'm saying there's a technological solution to a cultural problem, and there is never a technological solution to a cultural problem. But at least it saves you from having to care about followers.)

A New Year’s resolution for tech companies: knock it off with the CAPTCHAs

@theverge My favorite (by which I mean "the absolute worst") is when you still have to do one after being charged for something. Like entering a valid credit card number and paying for a ticket doesn't prove that I'm legitimate, identifying STAIRS does.

Also I still don't know if I consider the pole to be part of a stop sign. And I don't know if Google does, either.

#Fediverse hive mind, I need your help. I don't like the dark mode colour palette on my site. Do any of you have any recommendations for a dark colour palette?

I'm aware of Dracula, but not really a fan of that either.

Thanks!

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@kev I've always liked the Solarized color palette, https://ethanschoonover.com/solarized/.

Here we go! Installing Linux Mint (LMDE-6) for the first time. This is not a 'New Year's Resolution', it's a 'Microshaft can cram their latest steaming pile of OS Resolution'!

This is an old Win7 laptop that's 100% expendable to me, so I figure it's the perfect place to start.

Photo of an open laptop displaying the Linux Mint welcome screen. Below the screen is a green USB stick lying on its side. Above the screen is a blurry background of various objects.

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@DukeDuke Nice! I'm interested to know how you like Mint. I'm thinking of buying a new laptop soon and have not kept up with what Linux distros people currently like. (I've been using plain Ubuntu for a while now.)

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@DukeDuke Oh thanks, that's good to know about.

got damn but youtube sure took a major dive into the shitty end of the internet pool with this new advertising blitz. far right ads are disturbingly frequent. do they need money that badly?

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@Green_Footballs Their recommendation algorithm went off the rails this year, too, after being pretty solid in 2022.

Nearly every video I watched was either a recipe video or camping gear review, which apparently means I want to know EVERYTHING Ben Shapiro thinks about gay people.

Green_Footballs, to random
@Green_Footballs@mastodon.social avatar

AI is very bad at fingers and feet and other details about human limbs. If you think an image might be AI-generated, look closely at those details.

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@Green_Footballs This test holds up very well right now, but I worry about people relying too much on this particular "tell" for AI-generated images, since at some point it won't work anymore.

It's definitely a great way of knowing who is generating images now, so you know not to trust images from that same person or entity in the future.

But eventually, there won't be any way around having to make a judgement based on the credibility of the person posting the image, and not the image itself.

Hey (and wannabes, like me lol!)

My main walking / workout cordless buds, Jabra Elite 75ts, have stopped working for sound in the left bud. I tried some fixes suggested online, but no good.

So I did a bit of research and do not want to spend like $200+ on super high end. I was settling on the Liberty 4s, but the Liberty 4 NC seems a way better deal with some better features like noise cancelling.

Thoughts? Suggestions on other buds? Want under $100ish.

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@coffeegeek I bought the Soundcore Space A40s for my mom a while ago, and she says they sound great. I use wired myself, but reviewers liked the A40s, too. They're around $55 on Soundcore's website right now.

Is there a reasonable path emerging to bridge Social.coop to Bluesky federation?

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@ntnsndr There is a project in development that aims to make that possible. As far as I know, they still need some more things to be done on BlueSky's end before it can fully work. People post to the group @activitypubblueskybridge about it.

Here's a recent update from @snarfed.org@snarfed.org: https://snarfed.org/2023-11-07_bridgy-fed-status-update-8

Alright, we appear to have uncovered something with the help of y'all.

Twitter had a featured apparently called "Quality Filter" - this was probably turned on at some point unbeknownst to me once I crossed X-number of followers but was opt-in otherwise.

This was undoubtedly the thing that hid nasty replies and prevented them from showing up in my notifs. And if this wasn't on for you (or you didn't have access) that may explain why my lived experience Over There has been easier than here.

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@TechConnectify Whoa, I hadn't heard of that. That's good to know about. Yesterday I saw your post, and @Popehat said something similar. I absolutely believe what you're saying. But that same day I also saw posts from other people about how much better their time on Mastodon has been compared to Twitter. (I don't think that was in reference to you two, they were just saying it.)

Those other people had between 500 and 3,000 followers. Seems like a noise-filter is a must-have for large accounts.

Quality control for a beer is tough — ensuring non-rusted cap, properly-affixed label, good-tasting product — unlike the quality control required for a self-driving electric vehicle, manned spacecraft or neural brain implant.

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@MissingThePt Hopefully the neural implant can introduce some self-awareness, because admitting that you paid $75 for a Tesla-branded beer, found it disgusting, and drank it anyway is an amazing self-own.

my two favorite "actor demands top billing" movies are Fifth Element and Executive Decision because Luke Perry and Steven Seagal are like the second names listed in each and both are gone within 10 minutes of stuff actually starting to happen.

Perry wins between the two because he's just gone after 8 minutes and 6 lines.

He was in the Simpsons Krusty Gets Kancelled episode for longer.

tuckerm,
@tuckerm@saltylike.us avatar

@quasirealsmiths When I first read this post I thought, "Man, I need to rewatch The Fifth Element, I never even noticed that Steven Seagal was in it!" But that is not what you meant. Which is unfortunate.

Is it just me or "do humans have free will" one of those completely pointless, abstract, hypothetical discussions that simply doesn't matter one god damn bit?

tuckerm,

@srcrist @codinghorror I agree. Saying "you might as well live like you have free will" kind of feels like a variant of Pascal's wager, except that it actually works.
