Lawrence O’Donnell:

“We had a monster in the presidency not because of Donald , but because of the people who voted for Donald Trump and because of the people who worked for Donald Trump’s campaign to get him there. You get monsters like Donald Trump thanks to people like Hope Hicks.”

thatmags,

@GottaLaff He rightly does not give Hicks a millimeter of space, drawing the stark contrast between her choices and those of Cassidy Hutchison, both young women with proximity to power.

When I finally pack it all in and give up on this industry, one thing I can say is: a lot of you were really kind to me and that has been awesome.

@Brandi_Buchman You are and continue to be among the everyday heroes of these recent years, as your reporting has been a beacon that readers can use to guide through the chaos. Thank you, Brandi!

Here is the appellate court's denial of Trump's claim of immunity:
https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.cadc.40415/gov.uscourts.cadc.40415.1208593677.0.pdf

The decision opens by summarizing the allegations in the indictment, being careful to add that guilt hasn't yet been determined.

The court then dismisses the idea that they don't have jurisdiction over the issue and concludes that it does.

Then, on to immunity. The court rejects Trump's "separation of powers" argument, saying this:

That's strong language.

🎉 To commemorate confirmed rapist Donald Trump having to pay $83 MILLION for defaming E. Jean Carroll, how about chipping in $83 (or $8.30) to help re-elect President Biden & flip the House blue?

Lots of chatter about entrance polls showing that 3 in 10 caucusgoers would view Trump as unfit if he were convicted of a crime.

In October 2016, 3 in 10 Republicans viewed him as unfit even without a conviction. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/01/16/trump-unfit-polling-iowa/

thatmags,

@pbump Are we talking about the same Republicans between the two points in time? Are the three from 2016 still identifying with the party or have they shifted away and now are Independents? GOP has contracted and consolidated during intervening years.

I guess the Metatext, app I’m using to navigate Mastodon, is obsolete.

What app do you like best, and why? I’m mostly iPad and the App Store offers several options but I’m not feeling decisive.

thatmags,

@j2dumfounded I don't know whether there's an iOS version of Megalodon, but that's what I am using for Android and went with it after trying a few others

thatmags,

@j2dumfounded Any luck searching for old posts? Or under iOS tags? I know that you aren't the first to ask the question. I want to say that ppl were recommending an app called Ivory and I think that was one I looked for only to find it was iOS and not Android.

The Pentagon's inspector general announces a review “to examine the roles, processes, procedures, responsibilities, and actions related to the Secretary of Defense’s hospitalization in December 2023 – January 2024."

thatmags,

@w7voa Some of what's lost in the stew is that it's not unusual to experience post-procedure infection. It wasn't the initial outpatient surgery/prostate cancer Dx that sent him to ICU, it was the subsequent infection and emerging complications from that infection, plus doctor decisions re: appropriate level of care. Once his post-op recovery ventured away from routine, steps to communicate that shift were appropriate.

Oh, you like cursed facts about the uterine tubes, do you? We mentioned this in a reply yesterday, but here's another one:

You probably imagine the egg just rolls down the tube, right? INCORRECT. It is in fact squeezed down there by peristalsis, like what happens to food during digestion. And that's assisted by little hairy extensions on the lining which help waft that egg along, too.

thatmags,

@vagina_museum Related, how long does implantation take? Am thinking about the reality it presents for an ectopic pregnancy if the fertilized egg is hanging around for that duration.

I'll confess that I felt disturbed yesterday by the eruption of conspiracy theories immediately after the Supreme Court denied cert before judgement.

(I attached a definition of conspiracy theories)

It happened here (somewhat) but I saw it more on other social media sites.

People leaped from a decision they didn't understand to theories of secret collusion and corruption.

Why not wait for more information?

I continue to believe that the way to save democracy is to hold on to facts.
