I am seeing a lot of hubbub over a third case of #birdflu in a human in the US.

Just to be clear: Right now, in our "lowest" point of #COVID19 in almost a year, 278 Americans are being infected EVERY MINUTE. Ten percent or more will go on to suffer months or years of Long COVID symptoms. Some will have damaged brains, hearts, and other organs.

We shouldn't lose focus on the immediate and real risks we face of COVID.

@augieray TBF there was some amount of hubbub in 2019/2020 over low case numbers of Covid. In those early days, epidemiologists tried to emphasize that flu was still a greater concern than Covid.

We don’t know if this is early days of H5N1 in humans or a blip. With resistance to testing for any illness now, we do kind of have to say “third case of human bird flu that we know of” and presume at least a handful more illness getting dismissed as Covid, notCovid, flu, cold, etc.

@augieray It’s a fallacy to speak in absolutes when it comes to evolving viruses is what I’m saying.

@augieray A bird flu pandemic has been on somebody’s Bingo card for at least 20 years as it was cited way back then as a pending concern for the “Coalition for Breathing Safety” when the respirator manufacturers were throwing a tantrum to get liability immunity.

Them: ”You can mask if you want to”

My brain: 🎵 We can leave your friends behind
‘Cause your friends don’t mask and if they don’t mask
Well, they’re no friends of mine 🎵

🎵 we can mask, we can mask
Everything's out of control
We can mask, we can mask
We're doing it from pole to pole
We can mask, we can mask
Everybody’s washing their hands
We can mask, we can mask
Everybody's taking the chance

Oh well, the safety dance 🎵

So, you heard the good word that masks work? Are you looking to use that report to get back into masking regularly—because getting sick all the time is the pits—but there’s way more variety than way back in 2020 and you’re overwhelmed for choice? Have I got a shopping guide for you! With bonus infographics!

Here’s my little crash course in what to look for and how to determine the best fit for your face. It’s as easy as shopping for a new pair of jeans!

New wave of “post-pandemic” revenge travel even though we’ve been told repeatedly that revenge travel is over

thatkatharine,
@thatkatharine@ohai.social avatar

@giflian Mask mandates on planes were lifted two years ago. Two years is a long time to revenge travel against a lockdown that was two years prior to the mandate lift. Normal doesn’t seem to be going so well for the normal-cravers.

Something about how Covid-cautious people don't want to vote because of the failed public health policies, like, okay, yes, politicians suck and policies fail, and yet there are Black people still pushing to vote even though policies routinely and intentionally fail them.

If you want allies, you have to be allies.

The real emasculated man is the one weaponizing his own incompetence and learned helplessness by demanding someone do everything for him instead of learning basic life skills.

Listening to a podcast that mentions the pandemic, in past tense natch, and how it changed their behaviour re: being more cognizant about hand washing and gross surfaces. And, y’know, they sound really earnest about what they think they learned. Truly, it seems like people learned about hand washing and face touching in 2020, then got their initial vax in 2021, flung off their cloth masks, and never gave another thought about Covid.

Guess who was the only one at the novavax clinic in an elastomeric respirator. Guess whose partner was the only one in an N95.
Guess how many of the staff were completely unmasked in the low-ceiling’d drab little room with multiple stations set up to administer the vaccines.

Guess who is absolutely livid and is going to write several strongly-worded letters to… someone.

Oh, well, at least the CO2 was under 700.

I did not appease the Defaults by having children or getting married or driving a car or going to church, so why, now, on imaginary sky monster’s burning polluted Earth, would I consent to exposing myself to viruses with unpredictable dire outcomes to appease the Defaults and their warped sense of normal?
