Small modular nuclear reactors: a history of failure by Dr Jim Green | Jan 17, 2024

Context: Australian conservative Liberal and National Parties will take a pro-nuclear power policy to the next Australian election as the large part to their climate policy, including advocacy for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
Green itemises the history of failure and massive cost and construction time over-runs in SMRs and current western conventional nuclear power construction.

Decarbonising long haul road freight: modelling lifecycle emissions of hydrogen and electric trucks

“Our modelling shows battery electric trucks will provide deep emission cuts of 75-85%, on average, across the fleet in the future decarbonised scenario. Hydrogen (fuel cell) trucks will provide large cuts of 50-70%, on average.

@lil_meow_meow Agree. Green hydrogen will be needed fordecarbonising fertiliser production, petrochemical processes, shipping, perhaps industrial processes like green steel. Maybe some long term storage for grid balancing. Long haul trucking comes around middle of priorities. If you factor in building a hydrogen transport and refuelling infrastructure it adds cost and safety risk. See Liereich's Hydrogen Ladder version 5

Yes, Long Haul aviation is very problematic. Short haul low to medium passenger number aviation may be met by battery electric... or take high speed train.

Ahead of transport are addressing priority areas presently using Fossil based hydrogen with limited or no alternative options.

Sadly, they are rationing vaccines here, so even though I have a risk factor (asthma) I can't get a vaccine on the NHS or even pay for it privately. So sad to see such a glaring example of the Tory government's lack of care for people's well-being and survival.”

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said climate change is a major reason for these floods, and extreme weather events must be factored in when planning for new housing and communities.

Premier Allan also says the Victorian Government is "undeterred" in pursuing clean energy projects despite the Federal Government's rejection of a new hub at the Port of Hastings for the construction of offshore wind farms.

So we have the Premier making the Extreme rain/Floods link with climate change, while most media stories have ignored making the connection.

Release of 2003 Australian🇦🇺 Cabinet papers from Howard Government shows that Australia went to war in Iraq beside the USA with no full weighing the pros and cons of the Australian intervention.

There were also three major opportunities missed:

  • establish an emissions trading scheme.
