You know the world is in a period of epic transformation when Dems start showing up to off-year elections.

#uspol

szeis4cookie,

@enobacon @DontMindMe not here in VA - seems like VA Dems finally got the message that there are no off years here

    szeis4cookie,

@renwillis @verge @dcseifert I kind of feel the same way, and on reflection I'm a little surprised that the iMac still exists in the product stack. Maybe I don't think like the target customer demo but to me there's no reason for a desktop all in one form factor when I can get the same performance in a mobile form factor

    szeis4cookie,

@renwillis @verge @dcseifert Even in those cases I feel like a mac mini makes more sense, if for no other reason than a perfectly good monitor becoming e-waste if the logic board dies (or the reverse)

I told a bike mechanic today that my bike was stolen because a Tesla owner in my building left the garage open, and he said: “that’s because Teslas are 90% smug emissions, even though they’re electric” (it’s a happy story tho, as I got that bike back today, and Tesla owner has since switched to another car)

@skinnylatte great news to hear you got your bike back!

Had to drop Maggie off at 30th St. Station, and I was planning to run errands in Center City afterwards. I forgot that nothing opens until 9am.

Any tips for what to do in #Philly in the morning?

    szeis4cookie,

@skyfaller if Bui's is still there he should be open. Last I remember he's on 38th somewhere between Spruce and the Locust Walk pedestrian bridge. Excellent cheap breakfast sandwiches

I hope Virginians turn out in huge numbers for the state legislative elections on November 7. If the GOP in VA flips the state Senate, that would give Glenn Youngkin a GOP trifecta and he would undoubtedly start implementing a right-wing agenda. The off-year VA elections are considered a bellweather for 2024. It would be great if they could pull off a blue wave like they did in 2019 which would further signal momentum going into 2024.

    Here’s where to help:

The five minutes between when your alarm to remind you to sign your kid up for summer camp goes off and when summer camp registration opens is the longest five minutes ever.

    szeis4cookie,

@DrTCombs geez, already? My little one's TKD school had spaces open all the way up to the last week of school. Camps around me don't even start their signup process until like March

    @enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

"The Oregon (OMV) registration law took effect on January 1, 2016, making the first state in the nation to implement automatic [for drivers]" and then they mail you a ballot, but how do we get non-drivers to vote?

    szeis4cookie,

@enobacon @ttpphd yeah - the value there is that driver's licensing is a state-run identity validation (and in some states citizenship validation) process, and I don't think we want to put a similar process in place in order to ride a bike

Full report on "Developing Crash Modification Factors for Separated Bicycle Lanes" has been posted by FHWA.

Dramatic and significant crash rate reductions when 'traditional' bike lanes are upgraded with buffers and delineators. https://highways.dot.gov/sites/fhwa.dot.gov/files/FHWA-HRT-23-078.pdf

    szeis4cookie,

@bikepedantic @jumbanho so those numbers are to be read as the reduction in crash rates from applying a particular treatment - and in that case, a higher number is better?

    szeis4cookie,

@bikepedantic @jumbanho so then in this table, flex posts outperform other vertical treatments? That's interesting...

In some queer spaces, people speak of running away to ‘better countries’ when things become really bad but (1) things are also bad in many of those countries (2) I don’t think all of you will legally or financially be able to go to those countries. The idea that fascism is an immigration hop away downplays how relentless fascism is, and how difficult immigration is

    szeis4cookie,

@skinnylatte @Zeb_Larson I've come to a similar conclusion - I'm a relatively privileged US passport holder, and because of my age (I'm 38!) I don't do well in most of the points systems. I wouldn't come close to fulfilling most golden visa requirements either

I'm hearing reports of parents parking in the bike lanes as they wait to join the car line at a local high school.

There's a car line for high school???

I'm struggling to wrap my head around this. High school students are willing to be seen getting in cars with their parents?

    szeis4cookie,

@DrTCombs My 8th grader not only allows me to pick her up from school on the #CargoBike on occasion, she tells me her friends think it's cool. Trust me when I say I'm shocked...but I'll take it!

    szeis4cookie,

@RM_Transit for the longest time I thought Octopus was the world leader because of the network being opened up for non-transit retailers, but OMNY is truly a quantum leap forward from that. OMNY's only downside is a distinctly first world problem of remembering which card you're using for fares so that you hit the weekly fare cap

Add to the things I’m thankful for, my genes allow me to metabolize booze efficiently: https://www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/2023/08/15/asian-glow-alcohol-gene-mutation-cancer-risk/ For those who can’t, I’m sorry, and on the bright side, at least weed is legal in all the places where it is decent to live, so blaze away, or grab a pack of gummies if you need to be discreet.
