@DemocracyMattersALot He's not really in charge though, and I think he's more into Nostr. That is not to say that his association with Bluesky is not off-putting, or that there aren't a ton of other problems with it.

@candle Yes, this was kind of my understanding, maybe adding OStatus as well.

But I am a bit confused about Diaspora specifically. It looks like they have their own protocol, and I think the devs are not huge fans of ActivityPub?

I do see "Diaspora network" listed on Wikipedia* under "Communication protocols used in the fediverse", so not really sure what to make of that.

Not perfect but https://jointhefediverse.net/ is the best I think way to explain why someone should care at all about the Fediverse.

Personally I think a good tactic for most of the public to focus on features and pros/cons of Mastodon and other apps vs. trying to explain or mention at all.

How about instead of emotional appeals, let's do some real old fashioned marketing of Mastodon.

List features in the left margin.

List products across the top.

Put checkboxes where the product has the feature.

We used to do this kind of stuff really well.

Mastodon has successfully sold 12 million people on the practical use of decentralization because they see it in action. And they love it.

Bluesky’s biggest fans think decentralization is horseshit—and they’re hostile to it being implemented.

This is a bad omen for Bluesky.

@jalcine I have zero interest in another profit-driven (1) platform with questionable terms of service (2) and lenient attitude towards moderation (3), and one that uses the term "decentralized" very generously, considering its single instance is invite-only.

@zutalorz @jalcine Yes, I had an invite, I signed up for a wait-list when the project was announced and they were still looking into ActivityPub as an option. But my self-hosted Mastodon instance is the last social media site I intend to ever join.

If the next big thing that comes out works with ActivityPub, great, I'll see if I can follow anyone interesting. Otherwise I'll have to pass.

@Jonathanglick I haven't really looked into the technical aspects of either of these protocols, so I'm not really able to give you a good answer, but from a user perspective, I just want to be able to follow and interact with people without too much hassle.
