    @dansup @pixelfed I was reading the explanation for why they chose to create yet another walled-off social media site, and the reason that stuck out to me was that they can't guarantee a post will be deleted from other federated platforms.

    And I think Meta also points this out when enabling federation on Threads?

    i'm really excited to show https://compost.party to the world! it's a web server running on an old, broken phone, getting energy from the sun using one of those portable solar chargers that you may also have lying around.

    it's a real oddity and a real beauty

    Tech companies really do take their existing users/customers for granted. Always chasing bigger numbers.

    Same reason the "Sign up" button on a website is more prominent than "Log in".

    @Tijn @davidbisset I don't know, this really can be handy for finding things you only half-remember, like a portion of an article you've read, without remembering the website it was on.

    Another example I've seen was a writer/journalist who lost a part of their draft, but was able to find the text in their history.

    Not saying that the trade-offs in terms of possible privacy breach and environmental impact are worth it, but there's definitely a use for this feature.

    stefan,
    @stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

    @Tijn @davidbisset Oh absolutely. I was actually going to add, the real dilemma, for me, with a lot of this current technology, comes from how genuinely useful it can be for disabled folks.

    The examples I used are pretty trivial, so instead let's think about what it can do for disabled folks, or people with cognitive difficulties.

    stefan,
    @stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

    @Tijn @davidbisset But even in these cases, there definitely are better ways, but often there is just no will to implement them.

    A good example is blind people relying on AI to describe images online for them. This would be completely unnecessary if we all just learned to provide alt text.

    I'm prototyping a fediverse sharing button. Anyone interested in giving it a try?

    Feature highlights:

    • shows a logo of supported fediverse software
    • lets you share selected text
    • remembers the last fediverse domain used

    Demo: https://fediverse-share-button.stefanbohacek.dev/

    I just added notes on Hubzilla to https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/making-fediverse-apps-for-everyone/.

    Huge thanks to @jupiter_rowland for providing some points!

    Anything else I'm missing here, particularly:

    • OAuth scopes
    • sharing via URL
    • embedding posts
    • RSS feeds

    stefan,
    @stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

    And with what I've learned, I was also able to add Hubzilla support to my Fediverse Sharing Button.

    Go give it a try!

    Over the weekend I've updated my award-winning (no joke!) Creative Bots @glitchdotcom starter project to focus on Mastodon bots.

    I haven't really touched Twitter's API for over a year now, so it made little sense for me to offer the previous version of the project that also supported Twitter and Tumblr.
