Use a GPG smartcard with Thunderbird. Part 1: setup GnuPG

https://stafwag.github.io/blog/blog/2024/04/21/use-a-gpg-smartcard-with-thunderbird-part_1-setup-gpg/

I moved to a Thinkpad w541 with coreboot so I needed to set up my email encryption on Thunderbird again.

It took me more time to reconfigure it again - as usual - so I decided to take notes this time and create a blog post about it. As this might be useful for somebody else … or me in the future :-)

#debian #email #gpg #gnupg #linux #pgp #security #thunderbird

stafwag,

@adamsdesk For the fsf europe fellowship card I don't know. I got my card 8 year ago from floss-shop.de. (I live in Europe/Belgium BTW ) You can check with them if they ship to Canada.

But the setup should work with any GPG compatible smartcard. I'm also looking at #nitrokey Not sure if nitrokey is available on your side of the ocean 🙂

#yubikey is also a option:
https://stafwag.github.io/blog/blog/2015/06/16/using-yubikey-neo-as-gpg-smartcard-for-ssh-authentication/

But I lean more to nitrokey as I have the impression that they're more active in the opensource community

Not sure who is old enough to remember the Unix wars :-)

I did enjoy the videos about this topic:

The rise and fall of #Unix, the rise of #BSD and #Linux.

If you want to know more about the history of #FreeBSD #Jails, #Solaris #zones and #containers on #Unix systems in general and the challenges to run containers securely I recommend the video;

geerlingguy, to opensource

As belts tighten, corporate evolves—further and further from the ideals of Free Software.

Partly due to bad actions by "freeloaders," but also companies putting too much value in building code, and not enough on community and support. https://www.hashicorp.com/blog/hashicorp-adopts-business-source-license

stafwag,

@geerlingguy

This isn't new #mysql had similar licenses before they switched to a opensource license.

This just showed how old I'm :-)

It are difficult times for companies that develop #opensource But this isn't a good decision IMHO. In the long term opensource will win as it allows users / multiple companies to work on the same product, So it's sad that HashiCorp is changing its business model.

stafwag, to FreeBSD

Took the time to install #FreeBSD on my #coreboot #thinkpad #w541 laptop.
It's a dual boot system now with #debian #gnu #linux and #freebsd

stafwag,

@dwarmstrong

I installed 2 ssds and use #coreboot #edk #UEFI to select the boot ssd..

So edk UEFI is the boot manager. I'll create a blog post about the #coreboot installation on the #thinkpad w541 when I find some time.

    The first error is to ask AI or use "photoshop" to update the photo. Employers/people need to accept how you are, No AI needed. Or a real "smart" AI should have answered this 🙂

    "Diversity is human strength" something that we (people) still need to learn...

    stafwag,

    @glitzersachen @renwillis

    Yep, I agree but why not just make a real picture?

    Still odd that IA makes an Asian person "white". So something is wrong with IA learning...

    But probably also with our society. :-(

    I created it because I needed something to read the documentation when I migrated from dos to Unix/Linux :-)
