So i made the mistake of reading an article about war crimes before going to bed last night. The details was....graphic and kinda traumatizing to me, eventho i consider myself someone with a high tolerance. But human suffering - oof. Not so much.
My question - what books would you recommend I read before going to bed? Something calming and soothing?

@liztai Wodehouse, especially the Blandings series.

4.5/5 @thestorygraph for Molly Clavering's "Because of Sam", book 7/15 for me in #DeanStreetDecember 2023. Nearly flawless, delivering all the middlebrow muddles and mellow magnanimity one could hope for. #AmReading #ebooks #Kobo @bookstodon #ReadersOfMastodon https://app.thestorygraph.com/reviews/72af6223-a3c2-4d46-bd13-9b43f47812dc

#Arsenal legend Ian Wright sharing wairua through a hongi with a young Gooner after a pōwhiri is probably the closest #Arsenal will ever come to #Aotearoa. He gets extra credit for having shared a Māori phrase a few days ago that could loosely be rendered in Latin as Victoria Concordia Crescit 🙏❤️👍

It took me 23 days to read the book on the left, just a few hours to read the book on the right. Both were thoughtful and informative, especially as the 1200 year old city on the left may one day end up in an edition of the book on the right, which features many drowned sites.

TFW you're reading a mystery set in the UK written by a UK resident author and your keen detective abilities make you think "hmmmm, US edition?"🤔

So you're starting a new series and it has a prequel. Is it assumed that the prequel should be read after the first couple of books, or do you go for it first?

ronsboy67,
@ronsboy67@mas.to avatar

@WagesOf It dependson length. When I started CJ Cherryh's Foreigner series, I read the 2 VERY short prequel novellas first, and was pleased I did. If a prequel is full-length, I more likely to start with first published.

This is a #kdrama casting pet peeve but I'm tired of characters that are supposed to be raised in the US or Europe that don't have the correct accents. It's a real annoying sticking point. Your character was raised in Iowa and you can't pronounce corn correctly.

Oh my - a #cdrama dilemna…
City in the City series just dropped on iQiYi.
About a bank teller & a bank VP in the Shanghai finance sector. Not usually a topic I enjoy.

Director is not that great. Script is based on a novel.

But wow… the MLs are super good!

Bai Yu Fan was brilliant in Ripetown, Reset and Minning Town.

Yu He Wu is a pro - Lead in Three Body, Rebel Princess and was crafty Cao Cao in The Advisors Alliance…

Do I risk it?!
Anyone tried it out?!

I'm 4 episodes in and there's no violence, no dramatic moments and no traumatic experiences.

@emmaaum "interesting" is a wonderfully kind way of saying 'idiotsyncratic' (sic) - thank you. I am a somewhat niche demographic as a 50+ male who's a hardcore brony, that's for sure. 🤔

@ronsboy67@mas.to avatar

@s1m0n4 @emmaaum Thanks for this summary - it sounds VERY MUCH my cup of tea. I've had a soft spot for Jeong Ryeo Won ever since cracking up at her "American" character's REALLY thick Aussie accent in #KDrama My Name is Kim Sam Soon. She was also all kinds of awesome in History of a Salaryman (a romance Drama in which the issue of consent never comes up because the ML & FL never kiss 😂 ) and I've liked several of her legal Dramas. So I was hoping this one would be one for me, thank you!

@emmaaum THANK YOU!

I saw one of them, We Made a Beautiful Bouquet a year or 2 back, and really enjoyed it. I've seen the lead female actor in 2 movies and 1 Drama now, and she's impressed me in them all. "Bouquet" was a beautiful film, reflective, realistic, bittersweet. In my utterly philistinic opinion, of course. #JFF2024

@Astrealix @Aesecakes I've only been following the women's team for 2 seasons, about 1.5 seasons more than necessary to have had enough of Eidevall, but who would be credible contenders for an upgrade? Leah's "my home" signing spiel makes it possible the decision to make Emirates the women's official home ground played a part in her decision. It also suggests the club is really serious about the women's team, so they absolutely deserve better, imo

Which side couple has a special place in your heart? @kdrama

ronsboy67,
@ronsboy67@mas.to avatar

@s1m0n4 @vaseline @kdrama I have found many times that STPs are fun to follow, and have often rewatched Dramas for them, rather than for the OTP. Operation Proposal is great example. A Drama with a great first couple tbut where I still enjoyed the 2nd even more was Miss Korea. A #KDrama with an OUTSTANDING 2nd pair tht I hesitate to recommend is King2Hearts - I hesiste BECAUSE the SEP is so good. Those whove seen it will know what I mean

Whenever I'm really enjoying a Drama like #CDrama 'Fake It Till You Make It", I get nervous nearing the end: "Will it stick the landing?" It did & gave me the rare treat continually upping it's score its score right to the end, finishing on 10.25/10 - SMART dialog, sweet, stunning chemistry between 2 skilled leads, the bonus is for the perfectly grounded feelgood realism of the very end. It's also seen #CDrama move from 4th to 2nd in my average ratings, bumping #KDrama into 3rd
