quinnanya, to datascience

I've ended up with an inquiry from a #DataScience student interested in examples of #harm coming to people because of #data collection (especially in a war context, but open to anything). Do folks have any favorite pointers / examples I could pass along?

Words Without Borders has a 20 hr/wk paid #job for a #DigitalHumanities fellow interested in the publication and promotion of international #literature; applications due Friday March 22nd. Joke's on you, language owl: Indonesian doesn't do verb conjugation. And you would know this if you bothered teaching grammar explicitly. 🤨 #Duolinguo

quinnanya,

@slothrop For adult learners, explicit grammar instruction is a shortcut. You can figure out rules, at least sorta, by seeing enough examples but it's slow. Even children take many years to fully learn a language. Lots of people had bad experiences with it in school and hate it and that's unfortunate! And better to learn a language in a way you find tolerable than not at all! But if you're serious about learning the language beyond a few phrases, grammar is essential.

What are the best ways to discover Mastodon accounts that I may want to follow? Remember #FollowFriday on the bird site?

Also: follow recommendations are welcome for all things open source software, developer communities, software supply chain security, and San Francisco!

quinnanya,

@luggage @davelester There's a whole list of lists of academics on Mastodon. Each list is run by different people; I used Google forms and a publicly visible results spreadsheet. I've had to make updates manually when people change their handles but it hasn't been too bad. https://github.com/nathanlesage/academics-on-mastodon

Okay, all ye fans of Tamsyn Muir's series, I have finished the of every name Gideon and Harrow call each other and written it up. Will get repurposed as an example for a little guidebook to textile dataviz that I'm working on. https://quinndombrowski.com/blog/2023/12/21/locked-loom-1-gideon-the-ninth/

It ended up being an intense #teaching day, with a 3-hour workshop for a student group, teaching different groups four different #crafts simultaneously. #MultilingualDH class was solid training for this, plus the three kids. Here's some machine #knitting and some #needlefelting. #DHsewing

Today is my department's holiday party and I am dressed as graphically correct multi-ocular O. My favorite problem child #Unicode character, and while they amended it to add more eyeballs, they did not include the doodled flames. So I've got a fire shawl and cowl to fix that. #DHsewing

quinnanya, to ai

It's day 1 of the #AI class final student project presentations, and I have no idea what this will turn out like so I'm channeling the marvelous and strange with the dinocorn dress today. Also the #library holiday party, thus the #weaving of my group's Slack messages. #DHsewing

quinnanya, to latin

Manish Goregaokar & Ben Joeng are acting out a scenario of a #Unicode proposal user community interview for #English, were #Latin not the basis for #ASCII. Actually justifying C vs G, explaining capital letters, etc is a fun and funny thought experiment for an Anglophone audience. #MultilingualDH

Some days my outfit says things I can't say aloud. Other days, it's a way to jump up and down and shout "This is exactly my kind of geekery and I am nerding out so hard right now!" Today at the Face/Interface type design conference it's the multiocular O pants and a new archival top.

The #DataSittersClub is back with an all-new book on topic modeling! If the LDA buffet explainer didn't do it for you, give this one a try: thanks to @xandaschofield and her student Sathvika Anand, I now feel like I actually understand how it works. https://datasittersclub.github.io/site/dsc20.html #DigitalHumanities

quinnanya, to random

We are so, so close to publishing the next #DataSittersClub book, I have to share the cover. @xandaschofield helps us get to the bottom of topic models in "DSC 20: Xanda Rescues the Topic Modeling Disaster"! #TopicModeling #DigitalHumanities

I can't wait for #AI class today, because I'm going to show excerpts from "Measure of a Man" and "The Offspring" and geek out about how librarians and data work are represented in #StarTrek then go through qntm's "Lena". The #dataviz scarf goes with the new #librarian/Trek article. #DHsewing

We've got a #job open for a project manager for SILICON, a new initiative to support digitally disadvantaged languages being added to #Unicode. There's opportunities for hands-on project work as part of it; it'd be perfect for a recent #MultilingualDH graduate. Happy to answer questions!

Today's #AI class was Pollanyi, Kuhn, are #LLMs a scientific revolution, Silicon Valley utopianism and the #WholeEarthCatalog. The books-and-knowledge-swirl dress felt apt. The remnant half hamburger and "man eclipsing nature" left behind on the whiteboard did, too.

quinnanya,

@luis_in_brief That was the question we put to the students! The consensus, FWIW, seemed to be no, that they're new tools with potentially some significant ramifications (TBD) but it's not a new conceptual framework that sheds some new light on things that the prior model couldn't explain well.

Kindergartener: What are you going to be for ?
Me: I'm going as the Archives.
Kindergartener: UNICORN?! 🦄
Me: No, uniCODE... 🤔 But actually, good point, also yes.

5.5 years ago I made this dolman top with the original 1966 ELIZA paper and code for the birth of my daughter with the same name. Last night I changed up the sleeves and today I'm wearing it to teach ELIZA in the undergrad AI class. #DHsewing

TFW you get an email 2 hours after the parent-teacher conference that the teacher has just tested positive for #covid. 😬

I did this outfit better in the winter when we used it (with other accessories) to play a game of "Copyright or wrong?" but it still makes me happy on the day we're talking and in class.

Had to explain to the kindergartener that the grocery store isn't, in fact, Traitor Joe's. #homophones

Today was the first meeting of the Stanford LitLab, and I thought I'd get into the spooky spirit in a dress of dead DH projects. Can't guarantee it's totally free of editorializing... #DHsewing #DigitalHumanities

In case you're curious what we're up to in the undergrad #AI class that counts for humanities or social science distribution requirements at Stanford, I've posted the syllabus here. More notes, materials, resources and adjustments to come! #DigitalHumanities
