Joke's on you, language owl: Indonesian doesn't do verb conjugation. And you would know this if you bothered teaching grammar explicitly. 🤨 #Duolinguo

quinnanya,

@slothrop For adult learners, explicit grammar instruction is a shortcut. You can figure out rules, at least sorta, by seeing enough examples but it's slow. Even children take many years to fully learn a language. Lots of people had bad experiences with it in school and hate it and that's unfortunate! And better to learn a language in a way you find tolerable than not at all! But if you're serious about learning the language beyond a few phrases, grammar is essential.

What are the best ways to discover Mastodon accounts that I may want to follow? Remember #FollowFriday on the bird site?

Also: follow recommendations are welcome for all things open source software, developer communities, software supply chain security, and San Francisco!

quinnanya,

@luggage @davelester There's a whole list of lists of academics on Mastodon. Each list is run by different people; I used Google forms and a publicly visible results spreadsheet. I've had to make updates manually when people change their handles but it hasn't been too bad. https://github.com/nathanlesage/academics-on-mastodon

Today's #AI class was Pollanyi, Kuhn, are #LLMs a scientific revolution, Silicon Valley utopianism and the #WholeEarthCatalog. The books-and-knowledge-swirl dress felt apt. The remnant half hamburger and "man eclipsing nature" left behind on the whiteboard did, too.

quinnanya,

@luis_in_brief That was the question we put to the students! The consensus, FWIW, seemed to be no, that they're new tools with potentially some significant ramifications (TBD) but it's not a new conceptual framework that sheds some new light on things that the prior model couldn't explain well.

I realized today that we don't have a cicada emoji, which seems like an oversight. They're the avatars of endless screaming.

quinnanya,

@Annalee Given the #Unicode preference for multi-function #emoji and combinatory possibilities of what's already there, I wonder if one might get a cicada faster by proposing a 🦗😱 combo with a zero-width joiner. 🤔

My fatal flaw: even after 11 years in Berkeley I struggle to keep a straight face during group chanting (e.g. of the sort that apparently went down during the kindergarten back-to-school night that I missed last night). You can take the gargoyle out of UChicago, but group chanting of mottos and sayings is a bridge too far.

quinnanya,

@luis_in_brief I too have experienced the non-ironic sageing. This place is stranger than fiction sometimes, even with the influx of tech people.

And so begins the first #BaldursGate3 Memorial Worldwide Bandwidth test... XD

quinnanya,

@grrrr_shark Honestly I'm a little shocked at how well it's working so far? 🤞🏻🙏🏻

Today we travel 500 miles further south. The oldest kid, tired of all this travel already, has promptly fallen asleep. Middle kid is reading peacefully while the youngest keeps asking if it's lunch time... at 9:15 AM. Send patient thoughts our way please. 🙏🏻😳 #roadtrip

quinnanya,

@jspath55 We've gotten two of those so far, too

Do I know people who have run introductory workshops (1-2 hours long) on static site generators for librarians who want to set up a personal website and know a little coding and want to understand how stuff works (vs. "type this in and don't worry about how it gets turned into web pages")? thanks

quinnanya,

@cassey @gvwilson @nirak My group has done a workshop like that on basic static sites, though I'm failing to turn up the workshop repo at the moment. (@simonwiles any chance this rings a bell?)

I am digging through another tool registry for the #DigitalHumanities. This time it is the SSH Open Marketplace (https://marketplace.sshopencloud.eu), a multi-stakeholder, three-year infrastructure project that received substantial funding from the #EU 's #Horizon2020 programme. After the end of the initial grant-funding, the service is operated by #DARIAH, #CLARIN, and #CESSDA

Thanks to their API (yeah!), I can dig through the dataset and I am a bit puzzled by what I found: 1237 of a total of 1687 tools were directly sourced from #TAPoR (https://tapor.ca/).

Granted, this source and others are somewhat acknowledged, albeit not to the extent that I would expect when it's essentially all there is. Especially, since the site also heralds five core principles (guiding values etc. etc.), among them curation. But as it stands, the actual curation was apparently done by TAPoR and its predecessors.

quinnanya,

@tillgrallert Interesting to see that it's live now! I remember those planning meetings from DH 2019.

A non-trivial part of what's in TAPoR (at least, the non-text analysis parts, since TAPoR was originally just text analysis) was inherited from DiRT. DiRT inherited some of them from arts-humanities.net. It's a long chain of abandoned directories and work passing forward. #DigitalHumanities

quinnanya,

@tillgrallert Literally the only model that's proven functional over a long term is the individual senior faculty member personally committed to it and able to write it into their grants over the course of their career. And that by definition won't last forever.

Don't build a directory, folks. Not even if you're a consortium funded by large grants. The labor never ends and it will crush you until you let it die.
