From Aug 3-6, I will play in Augsburger Friedensfest-Open (AFRO), Group A. This might probably not go too well, but I like to play up. It's easier to gain rating with a mediocre result against very good opponents, than with a very good result against mediocre opponents 😉😁

AFRO will be seven rounds Swiss, long TC, in four days, and it will probably be quite hot, like it was last year. Tough!

But Oct 26 - Nov 5, I will play in 26. OIBM again (= Offene Internationale Bayerische Meisterschaften) at Lake Tegernsee. Nine rounds Swiss, long TC, one game per day. I hope to have a good start so that I can play at least once on the first floor (Masters floor 😀).

This week I learned: be a snitcher more often.

What happened? There is a bug in #Linux #kernel 6.4 causing memory corruption. The culprit is known since ~Mon. A workaround was found and supposed to head to Linus on Wed or Thu; that didn't happen till Sat, which finally made me CC Linus[1]. Only 12h later the problem was solved for real in mainline with a CC: <stable… tag.

If I had CCed Linus on Mon, I guess something similar had happened back then already.

@kernellogger As a Linux user, it worries me deeply that such fundamental bugs go undetected for quite some time in a kernel version that is considered to be "production" 😲

In this 2+1 bullet game, I had the white pieces and I already sacrificed the exchange for a pawn and an attacking position. Black just played 19. ... Rad8. I found a nice move here which gives White the edge. Can you find it, too? #Chess

@runarcn You are right, that's what was played, including the mate 😁 But even if Black plays 20. ... Qg5, White is still a lot better after 21. Qxg5 Nxg5 22. f3, because he now has two pawns for the exchange, and a great position with the Bishop pair where Black cannot do much.

Want to achieve > 1600 bullet rating on chess dot com, but it turns out, it is hard for me. Too many blunders, still 🤔

It really seems to be much harder on chess dot com... Not sure why. On Lichess, I already have > 1900 in bullet. Is it the different rating algorithm? Or the different population of players? I don't know.

@runarcn As far as I know, chess com uses standard ELO, while Lichess uses Glicko2.
