None of my 18650s are actually 65mm long. The longest 18650 I've found in my battery box is 70mm long even..

pavel,

@martijnbraam I have even seen them advertised as "18650, 19mm wide, 7cm long". My headlight (Zebralight) expects right size and I have trouble getting cells that fit :-(.

pavel,

@martijnbraam Zebralight has a bit more tolerance -- even some protected cells fit -- but newer cells tend to be protected and too big. And sellers don't advertise size :-(

pavel,

@martijnbraam So actually Zebralight seems to like unprotected cells. It has protection, and two protections tend to interfere with each other in bad ways. When I'm in the middle of woods somewhere, I need light, and unprotected cell can power 0.1lm output pretty much forever. OTOH in subzero temperatures you can easily trigger protection on nearly full cell with 700lm attempt, and you are in dark, with no way to recover.

The new Linux phone from Jolla & its benefits? ⛵ :linux:

◉Sailfish OS - the only independent commercial mobile OS
◉Sailfish is NOT 100% closed source - Jolla plans to open the remaining blobs
◉More "Linuxy" than Android; Qt / Wayland / filesystem
◉Free of Google / Apple
◉Use Android compatibility in case an :android: app is needed
◉Jolla is a Finnish company - 🇫🇮 / 🇮🇸 are considered most trustworthy nations in Europe

@Linux Nothing is 100% closed source these days. And Jolla was more closed-source than just the blobs. Try not to mislead people.

Laptop died yesterday but thanks to the , the Baseus Dock, an HDMI Screen, a USB keyboard and 's docked mode I have access to most of the things via my phone.

helps a lot as that means I have my ssh keys available by just plugging it in.

Took me about 15min to notice that I didn't even plug a mouse in.

    pavel,

@agx How is the performance, BTW? I tried doing that with pinephone, and I can clearly tell there's latency between keypress and letter appearing it kgx, maybe 200msec. It happens on internal screen, too, so it is not issue with HDMI or something. VTs (ctrl-alt-f2) are okay. I suspected phosh is just resource intensive?

All it would take for AI to completely collapse is a ruling in the US saying these companies have to licence the content they used to train these tools.

They simply would never reach a sustainable business model if they had to fairly compensate all the people who wrote, drew, edited, sang or just created the content they use.

Simply being forced to respect attribution and licenses would kill them. Will that ruling ever happen? Maybe not. Should it? I think so.

    pavel,

@thelinuxEXP Come on, copyright is overreaching enough already. Plus, this would effectively give Facebook and China monopoly on big language models. Does not sound great.

Any #Pine64 #PinePhone users out there? Thinking about grabbing a PinePhone Pro to try and use as a daily driver. Thoughts?

    pavel,

@linmob @prasket Dunno. I have OnePlus 6 here, and while it is fast, dealing with the Android to boot is not exactly fun. It takes 3 tries to boot or so... and due to oled you have little feedback. Plus, audio does not really work in Mobian, nor does USB host, and I doubt cameras ever wills. I'd hope PinePhone Pro might be in better shape... PinePhone certainly is in better shape.

Well, yeah, but guess what: maybe then the companies behind those engineering teams will join up and invest money to handle the problem "[…] at the source, in a central, efficient and reliable manner. […]". 😬

Does anyone have a good introduction to how a #Linux #wireless driver is structured? The best I could find so far is https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/driver-api/80211/index.html which is more reference than introduction. Or maybe there's a thoroughly commented mainline driver that could be an example? :catThink:

I'm trying to get an idea of what I'd need to do to replace the staging-in-megi's-tree-only rtl8723cs driver used for the #Pinephone. #LinuxMobile

    pavel,

@airtower Is rtl8723cs very different from rtl8723bs? Anyway I guess understanding if existing driver can be adapted is the first step. Not sure about good introductions, but network drivers are conceptually quite simple, and wifi is not an exception. Good luck :-).
