How would you diagnose this website's #seo

Chart shows impressions from Search Console data.

For best part of a year, Google did not like this site.

A year later it's recovering.

What did I change?

Absolutely. Nothing.

Literally, not one thing.

Was the content less "helpful" before? But is "helpful" now? When it's the same content...?

Nope, no hack, no domain renewal lapse or SSL ssliping (sorrynotsorry). No manual penalty either.

I realise I'm presenting this as a puzzle I have the answer to - but I genuinely don't.

Literally nothing has changed - bar the traffic tanking and then recovering.

Frustrating though, isn't it?

It reminds me of the old days, trying to get a phone signal and you'd stand in one spot, or wave your phone around, or stick your arm in the air or whatever and then SUDDENLY one bar of signal!

Only, you're not sure which of the things you did changed it... or whether it was something else entirely. 😄

Just using the @screamingfrog "Visual Custom Extraction" tool and... Mind. Blown.

For someone like me, that struggles to get Xpath to do what I want it to do (to the point of nearly launching various laptops across various rooms) this is mana from heaven.

Just bought a link.

Kind of.
Key phrase a client needs soon (event based) has a featured snippet in the Google SERP from a calendar style site and on that page is one main link - that goes to a dead domain.

Bought domain - pointed it to client site.

I've been pretty offline lately as SO much has been going on.

  • Left my old job
  • Moved my daughter's playroom so I could take over the den on the first floor for my office (so much painting which I hate)
  • Started my new job! So very excited about this new challenge (profile here is updated and slowly working on it elsewhere)
  • Attended the Women in Tech SEO Fest

In the furious painting stage, I went a couple of days without even knowing about the helpful content update haha! #seo

Good tip on checking if two keywords are similar: look at the SERPs.

If Google is showing lots of similar URLs it's a signal they're similar.

If not, you need a separate landing page if you want to rank in each.

Also a reminder on INP coming to Core Web Vitals in March 2024, and a note from John that CWV takes into account 30-90(?) days of data, so fixing it on 1st March (or even 28th Feb) is not a good idea 😄
