I wonder how Bing/Edge coordinate to promote their Copilot tool (Bing's version of #Google Gemini).

I just tried one of the prompted questions listed:

"create a table that analyzes public funding for the arts compared to gdp"

(forgive the z-ised spelling) - and the answer starts with:

"I’m sorry, but I don’t have the specific data to create a detailed table comparing public funding for the arts to GDP." 🙄

Let's ask Gemini see what they have...

Whoopsie #Bing

At least Gemini takes a stab at it:

How come #NigelFarage gets to turn up out of nowhere and decree that this is now “the immigration election”‽

Ordinary voter here, and I don’t give a tinker’s toss about #immigration. I’d much prefer this to be “the climate change election”, please. If you agree, give this a RT. ♻️

@DrEdBridges It's utterly maddening what an oxygen suck that cretin is.

He's just a self-promoting, self-aggrandising bully.

And like all bullies, they want attention.

And like all bullies, it infuriates them if you ignore them.

And yet... he'll continue to get invited on radio, TV and 'leader' debates.

Maddening.

The NY case against #Trump was often described by the media as the “runt of the litter” compared to the other 3 cases. Well. It’s the only case with a conviction now. And the decision by the jury leaves zero doubt. Guilty on all charges. I tip my hat to the prosecutors for building a solid case and seeing it through. I tip my hat to Stormy Daniels for taking the stand and refusing to be intimidated. To Michael Cohen. And to the judge for staying laser focused on keeping the schedule.

@jwildeboer He cannot pardon himself? I thought that's what everyone was fearing?

Or is that just as the law stands (e.g. he could bring in new legislation so he could pardon himself?).

@optimisey@seocommunity.social avatar

Uh oh...

#Meta joining the "we're taking all your data to feed the #AI" train.

optimisey,
@optimisey@seocommunity.social avatar

#Slack slipping out their "We're taking everything you post, upload, message about" etc. to feed their #AI (which you could only opt out of via email?)

It feels like this is just spiralling out of control with tech companies racing one another because they CAN with no-one thinking about if they SHOULD. 😖

Well that was quick...

Google Gemini already admitting that Google have siteAuthority.

@simoncox And nary a mention of a cited source... again. 🙄

Can Google be held accountable for what it shows in the SERPs, whether it's AI Overview or Featured Snippets, if it takes the data from third parties?

If someone dies from eating glue, drinking urine, or committing suicide based on the advice shown in the SERP, who's responsible? #seo

optimisey,
@optimisey@seocommunity.social avatar

@MikeBlazer I think the glue/urine/blinker fluid examples are all fun and games - and silly, attention-grabbing examples of "Look! AI got it wrong!"

What's more worrying is the misinformation. Google is - for better or worse - highly trusted by a lot of people.

If it says, prominently and authoritatively "X is true/good/bad" - people will believe that.

I've seen examples about queries regarding what you can/cannot take into various countries - which is more problematic than a glass of urine.

optimisey,
@optimisey@seocommunity.social avatar

@MikeBlazer I mean the "make chlorine gas" to clean your washing machine could genuinely put people in danger.

18+ optimisey,
@optimisey@seocommunity.social avatar

@MikeBlazer Another example where Google's pushing answers which are just downright dangerous. 🙁

Yes "They could find that answer on Reddit themselves" but I still think that's not the same as Google pushing this to the top of a SERP.

I built an app for that (well, a Chrome extension).

@simoncox I've not come across #menditday before - but love the idea. There are a number of 'Repair Cafes' popping up around here, which is great.

Not much to add... though I was VERY pleased with myself for fixing my car's rear tail-light the other day.

Not really saving the world - but saved me a few quid! 😄

Guess what I've discovered isn't fun... trying to update WordPress with Arabic characters in plugins that only function with the Latin alphabet.

@Fizzle_Up Oh man... my sympathies.

I once worked on a site adding 30-40 new language and location sites and sudomains... and the UX considerations around Arabic were ENORMOUS.

That one sub-site took like 4-5 times as much work as any of the others. 😄

@simoncox @Fizzle_Up In this example it was more that the right to left orientation of the text made some fairly fundamental design elements either not work at all - or need significant re-thinking.

Tin hat time as #Google launches the heavily trailed #Vouchergeddon

Early data from @sistrix:

https://www.sistrix.com/blog/a-big-deal-out-of-nothing-what-googles-data-tells-us-about-voucher-code-sites/

shows:

Telegraph -53%
Sun -69%
Guardian +12%

Cue the "Google is a bunch of woke lefties!" folks.

Though also:

Daily Mail: -0.8% is largely unscathed... so far.
