Do you spell it:

mvsde, (edited )
@mvsde@mastodon.social avatar

@cferdinandi @Edent The hyphenated version “E-Mail” is the “correct” German spelling. When we have an electronic something, the E is always prefixed with a hyphen.

The more my brain switches to English though, the less I like the German spelling.

I wrote a few words to say goodbye to Star Trek: Discovery.

Haven’t watched the final episode yet, but regardless, the journey was incredible. I’m a tiny bit sad to see this wonderful crew go 🥲

Space suit technology is kinda amazing. I also wasn’t aware that no new EVA space suit model has been developed since the 80s.

@cferdinandi It’s great to see renewed interest by NASA for human spaceflight.

Not sure about the whole public-private partnership model and commercialization of space though.

In meetings I forget every time - I cannot deal with more that one stream of speech or text or thought at once. I can't.

If I let my mind wander, if I read an interesting post, if I write a post (like this one, lol), the main stream I'm supposed to be paying attention to is poof gone!

If I'm lucky I manage to bring my attention back just as someone is summarising 😬

mvsde,
@mvsde@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw Same here!

Also people who can watch something on TV and scroll through their phone and somehow can pay attention to both. How do they do this?

Explain this logo size

edit: The logo does become smaller when you allow scripts from cdn.jsdelivr.net. I missed that.

Bedeutet 'aufgeregt' 'excited'?

Also, mit positiv oder negativ Bedeutung?

In English 'excited' usually means a positive thing - like, happy-excited.

I find the German 'aufgeregt' and 'gespannt' confusing - they're sort of neutral, or are they? Do I have to qualify in a sentence whether I'm happy or stressed-out/unhappy when using them, or is it all contextual?

mvsde,
@mvsde@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw “aufgeregt” can go both ways. You can be “aufgeregt” because you anticipate something nice like your birthday. But you can also be “aufgeregt” because of an exam.

mvsde,
@mvsde@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw Using “aufgeregt” like that is totally fine 👍

I'm doing an accessibility ticket at work! Hooray! Couldn't be happier!

mvsde,
@mvsde@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw I guess it depends on context and expectations for the widget:

If the widget is an input in a form, I would expose combobox semantics and implement the corresponding keyboard support. Or use a select because it’s a lot easier.

If the items in the dropdown part are links, I would see if I can get away with a basic disclosure pattern. It can have advanced keyboard functionality with Arrow keys and Home and End to make navigation through it easier. But doesn’t have to.

mvsde,
@mvsde@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw Ok, that sounds like custom combobox territory.

The transition part from choosing “custom” to showing a datepicker is definitely not the easiest to create with native HTML elements.

I wasn’t prepared for all the stuff that floods the inventory in Baldur's Gate 3. And I’m one of those folks who has to collect everything in video games. I just can’t leave junk behind 😅

I guess I have to approach this differently. Maybe carry 1 dagger instead of 10. Should be enough, right. Right?

@Meyerweb @bkardell Accessibility might be an interesting topic.

Firstly, because of the discredit thrown around by one Jakob Nielsen.

But more importantly, because of the upcoming 2025 deadline for private sector businesses to comply with the European Accessibility Act.

If the success of Microsoft Windows is anything to go by, capitalism rewards exploitative mediocrity, not utilitarian excellence.

(Why yes, I’m testing on Windows and slowly losing the will to live again, how did you guess?)

mvsde,
@mvsde@mastodon.social avatar

@aral I use a Windows machine for the sole purpose of gaming, so I don’t have to get any real work done with that OS but I can “enjoy” the continued enshittification from the sidelines.

There’s definitely a pattern:

Windows 11 started as a kinda nice evolution of Windows 10, but then the marketing folks stapled one useless feature after the next onto the OS.

Same with Edge. Started as an interesting Chrome alternative without all the Google stuff and ended up even more bloated.

So, I didn’t get the memo that Nebula has smart TV apps now 🎉

And apparently they managed to make it more performant than whatever shit Paramount+ has put out in the world. Probably with a fraction of the budget.

Yes, I still hold a grudge against Paramount for pulling that Star Trek: Discovery stunt.

For many years, DSL/Cable routers by German company AVM, sold under the Fritz!Box brand, did some internal dns tweaking so that when you typed in http://fritz.box it would lead you to the config page of the router in your network. Now, years later, there actually is a .box TLD (Top Level Domain) and AVM forgot to register the fritz.box domain. Someone else did. And activated Certificate Pinning (HSTS).

UPDATE 2024-01-27: Their dns entries are flaky ATM, sometimes there, mostly not.

mvsde,
@mvsde@mastodon.social avatar

@jwildeboer If you accidentally visit the “real” fritz.box outside the home network, you can’t use that domain inside the home network anymore to access the router admin interface: the “real” website has HSTS enabled and the Fritz!Box of course doesn’t have a valid certificate for the domain.
