I have many issues with 3 Body Problem, but mostly they way overestimate that humanity will care about something that is happening in 400 years, when most people don't even care about the global warming that is happening right now.

muzzle,

@RickiTarr I see your point, but one of the issues with global warming is psychological: the fact that it has no agency, that it's not actively trying to kill us, luls us in a misplaced sense of safety.

That hopefully would not be the case with an alien civilization whose motives we can easily understand.

ErikJonker, to geopolitics
@ErikJonker@mastodon.social avatar

Thinking in scenarios, what would europe / NATO do if Russia decided to damage /destroy most undersea cables which are essential for our internet and networking in Europe? They have the undersea capabilities, it would not trigger a nuclear war. What would/could we do in response ?
@geopolitics

muzzle,

@nicholas_saunders @tness @ErikJonker @geopolitics many reasons were suggested when it happened, on the top of my head:

  • as a show of stubbornness
  • to force gas oligarchs to buy into the war
  • to intimidate Germany

I'm not sure I buy any of them, but some are at least plausible.

muzzle,

@mkoek @ErikJonker @geopolitics that sounds like a terrible idea and may actually play into Putin's hand. The open internet is one of the greatest tool in the hands of the russian opposition.

muzzle,

@mkoek @ErikJonker @geopolitics not sure, but it's not like they haven't tried to suppress access. Maybe because it's also an important economic tool and Putin can't afford to damage the russian economy any further.

    @mattwilcox @SuneAuken I may be talking out of my behind here, bet do you think there is a technological solution to the data volume problem?

    was supposed to go exactly that, and there was even a streaming extension to the protocol. It was made obsolete by the rise of the big content delivery services, but the code is still there, and it still works.

    @thomasfuchs while I understand the sarcasm, I find your take a bit too partial. LLMs may be lossy JPEGs for text, but JPEGs have their uses.

    Also, by your logic, mastodon is just a less efficient twitter and the fediverse is the 00's internet but harder to use.

    It's pretty darn cool how #Mastodon has built-in translation for posts in other languages. I barely speak a word of French but just had a nice interchange thanks at least in large part to that feature. Never could have done that on the birdsite without popping open a translation service window.

    Does anyone have any advice here on how to make your Mastodon less eurocentric? I do regular searches, follow people from outside Europe/US whenever I come across them, etc, but it’s quite slow, hard work. I was wondering whether there is a more strategic way - ie is there a list of instances that are not Europe/US based, and from which I could follow one person each or something? Not interested in changing my own instance, just to get more global connections. #Eurocentrism

    muzzle,

    @pvonhellermannn if you are following non-EU hashtags but they return little to no content give hashtag.place a try.

    It provides hashtags-as-bots for smaller/self-hosted instances that may not see a lot of the tagged posts from larger ones.

    Wander, (edited ) to selfhosted
    @Wander@packmates.org avatar

    The future of selfhosted services is going to be... Android?

    Wait, what?

    Think about it. At some point everyone has had an old phone lying around. They are designed to be constantly connected, constantly on... and even have a battery and potentially still a SIM card to survive power outages.

    We just need to make it easy to create APK packaged servers that can avoid battery-optimization kills and automatically configure an outbound tunnel like ngrok, zerotrust, etc...

    The goal: hosting services like #nextcloud, #syncthing, #mastodon!? should be as easy as installing an APK and leaving an old phone connected to a spare charger / outlet.

    It would be tempting to have an optimized ROM, but if self-hosting is meant to become more commonplace, installing an APK should be all that's needed. #Android can do SSH, VPN and other tunnels without the need for root, so there should be no problem in using tunnels to publicly expose a phone/server in a secure manner.

    In regards to the suitability of home-grade broadband, I believe that it should not be a huge problem at least in Europe where home connections are most often unmetered: "At the end of June 2021, 70.2% of EU homes were passed by either FTTP or cable DOCSIS
    3.1 networks, i.e. those technologies currently capable of supporting gigabit speeds."

    Source: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/library/broadband-coverage-europe-2021

    PS. syncthing actually already has an APK and is easy to use. Although I had to sort out some battery optimization stuff, it's a good example of what should become much more commonplace.

    jerry, to random

    I would like to take a moment to orient people to a brand new and highly innovative feature that was recently introduced in mastodon and many other fedi-apps. This feature enables you to not have to see posts from or interact with people whose posts you don’t like, don’t agree with, or are otherwise offended by.

    I like to call it the “block button”.

    Does someone on the fedi support the “other side” in the Israel/Hamas conflict? Instead of asking your moderators to figure out which side is objectively right in a no win situation, BLOCK! It’s amazing!

    Did someone just say that they are frustrated that they got Covid after having gotten all the vaccines? That’s not disinformation, it’s an opinion and you can block them!

    Does someone seem a little too happy that one of Biden’s staff got in trouble or that a democrat is getting charged? BLOCK! It’s amazing!

    Did someone use the word Nazi in a way that offends you? Yep, you guessed it! BLOCK!

    I have no idea what the median age of people on the fediverse are, but it’s disappointing that moderators are effectively having to act as camp counselors for 13 year olds who are having a disagreement. Yes, the substance of these disagreements tend to be much more consequential, but the pettiness is about the same or perhaps worse.

    If someone is harassing you or otherwise violating your instances rules, please do report them, but try to apply some perspective.

    muzzle,

    @jerry Reminds me of the alt text from this evergreen xkcd comic https://m.xkcd.com/386/ "What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"
