I am a native English speaker living in California, currently learning Hawaiian and hoping to use this platform for Hawaiian practice! Also some Spanish and German.

Pronouns: ʻO ia — yes Hawaiian is largely gender neutral, isn’t that awesome? In English, she/her will do the job, but what I really want is for English to grow to accept gender neutral pronouns as the default. Won’t it be nice when “he” and “she” become almost as rare as “thou”?

@elduvelle I’m using it for Hawaiian! It took me some getting used to since it’s a different approach than Duolingo. And I think the introductory unit exercises were an odd set. But once I got used to it, I find it very helpful. AND I worked through quite a lot for free!

I stayed at a hostel earlier this week which had this whiteboard in the dining area with the greeting “welcome!!” in
various . I was a little tempted to ask them to change “Aloha!!” to “Welina mai!!” which would be a better translation of . “Aloha” is more of a generic greeting. But, at least most people will recognize !

@LeftistLawyer Yes, and yes (once in 2022). We believe my husband (not O-) brought it home from work. His symptoms were worse than mine, mine was a mild sore throat & mild dysphoria, we both recovered quickly. We were both vaccinated.

Instead of increasing interest rates, what if the fed just applied small static electric shocks any time you purchase an item? They could tune the strength of the shock up or down depending on the latest inflation report.

It occurred to me earlier today that people might not realize, Jonathan Swift described ChatGPT in his 1726 book Gulliver's Travels (part III, A Voyage to Balnibarbi). Most modern descriptions are no more accurate.

Example of the current Google Translate badness for today: Google translates “The white pineapple of Maui is sweet” as “He ono ka paina keokeo o Maui.” Aside from dropping the ʻokinas from “ʻono” and “keʻokeʻo”, it should be a pepeke painu not a pepeke ʻaike he sentence structure, and “paina” is pine tree, it should be “hala kahiki” for pineapple.

I still owe an #introduction but for now I am suddenly reminded to mention how I chose this Mastodon server #OhaiSocial ! It’s true I often use the greeting “oh, hi!” so in English it sounds friendly & sociable, but I am hoping to use this platform to help practice the Hawaiian language which I am studying. In Hawaiian the word ‘ōhai means monkeypod tree, a spreading shade tree. I love the image of all of us gathering under the ʻōhai to socialize!!!
