San Franciscan living in #Istanbul and bumming around Europe for about 9 years now, studying Turkish, Middle Eastern and Balkan drumming and getting into trouble. Mostly #devops, #IAC, #terraform, #music, #drumming, #dogs and #travel. Kind of nerdy. I'm seeking employment with an American company, working remotely from utc+3. Every I think about my grandfather who landed on , losing a brother and a cousin only to come back unfixably broken from the hell he endured.

We spread propaganda about those young men being patriotic nazi-killing heros, but we do them a great disservice by never acknowledging the lifelong PTSD they suffered from and passed down to the next generations.

This isn't hyperbole. Vote out the GOP in STATE races

The GOP is so close to be able to call an Article V Constitutional Convention at the state level & rewrite the entire damn thing, authored by the Federalist Society, & there will be nothing anyone can do

Do you really want these insane laws they're passing in red states to be hard coded in the US Constitution?

Do you really want the US billionaire oligarchs to buy a constitution they are happy with?

They just need 34. Almost there.

mhalligan,
@mhalligan@hachyderm.io avatar

@paul The GOP has done a masterful job of distracting people with the trump and Marjorie Taylor Greenes of the country so that we don’t notice they’re about to literally rewrite the constitution.

I live in a country that rewrote its constitution right after a coup and is trying to rewrite it again this summer the institute shariah law.

If we look at the world, this kind of ultra right wing illiberal democracy has spread and is taking over the Western world as well.

mhalligan,
@mhalligan@hachyderm.io avatar

@paul @Mallulady the USA feels like a failed experiment at this point, but we had a good run. Second longest lasting continuous democracy in the world, 248 years ain’t bad.

When the country splits in two, I wonder what the north / west will be called.

As a person who enjoys live music, this is the kind of action I love to see.

“It is time to break up Live Nation-Ticketmaster,” US Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement announcing the lawsuit.

In case you missed it: After #GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), after the #DMA (Digital Markets Act), after the #CRA (Cyber Resiliency Act), The EU continues to lead the way with the #AiAct. None of these regulations are perfect. Many will argue they are not even Good Enough(tm). And I agree in parts. But in general I applaud the #EU for not shying away from regulations that are (IMHO) needed. So I once again say #ThanksEU and now the hard work to make these regulation better starts :)

Regular process:

  • Get angry at something in the media

  • Draft a toot about it

  • Re-draft it

  • Re-draft again

  • Ask myself how will this help?

  • Post a dog picture instead

International Workers' Day (IWD, May 1) 2024 was marked by women's rights activists in Saneh/Sine/Sanandaj of Rojhelat (Iran-held part of) Kurdistan with a "Long Lice International Workers' Day"- and "Women Life Freedom"-banner, also calling the general public's attention to the day by distributing sweets, IWD-greeting cards and food, reported JinHA, the Women's News Agency.

@b9AcE and the very next day That man has the nerve to criticize how America responds to protests.

mhalligan,
@mhalligan@hachyderm.io avatar

@b9AcE When I first moved here, the AKP hung posters welcoming the Pride Parade and gave lipservice to Turkey being an inclusive nation. Then they banned the (permitted) parade with 2 hours notice and attacked those who showed up.

After almost a decade I’m mostly numb to it, but sometimes it gets under my skin.

The pro-palestine protests are the only demonstrations I’ve seen since the “coup”.

Protestint in support of Ukraine would end with a prison sentence.

mhalligan,
@mhalligan@hachyderm.io avatar

@b9AcE Yeah. I know more than a few friends who got green card marriages after Gezi, and then after the "coup". Especially our gay friends.

It's not very encouraging that Turkey is the most liberal and democratic country in the islamic world.

Erdogan will die in office, because if he doesn't, he loses his presidential immunity and will spend the rest of his life in a courthouse.

mhalligan,
@mhalligan@hachyderm.io avatar

@b9AcE the “counter-coup” is the constitutional rewrite they are working on.

It’s clear that there is only one party here. 1984. Erdogan is big brother, AKP and MHP are the “inner-circle”, CHP et all are the “outer-circle” and Gülen is Emmanuel Goldstein.

As much of a shitshow as America is, the extreme difficulty of modifying our constitition is a very good thing.

@b9AcE I honestly would be happy as hell for Turkey to leave NATO, even if it means losing the Black Sea.

With friends like Turkey, who needs friends? If a major conflict happened, Turkey will be "neutral".

The thing that bugs me the most is not only is Turkey now a hub to sell russian oil / gas to Europe, he brags about it, and the European governments are too greedy to even make a peep over this.

mhalligan,
@mhalligan@hachyderm.io avatar

@b9AcE I think they had been suspended for a while, maybe after the "coup"? I remember he talked about that quite about, that the EU wasn't fulfilling its part of the bargain. He has a great bargaining chip, the ability to bus 8 million refugees to the Bulgarian and Greek borders.

In my lifetime, the only significant revolution I can think of, which ended for the better, was Ceasceau. I've kind of accepted that the bad guy always wins.

mhalligan,
@mhalligan@hachyderm.io avatar

@b9AcE But we had 200% inflation every year of covid (Despite what the official #s are. We can all do math). The economy isn't enough. As long as people can buy bread and cay, there won't be change unfortunately.

mhalligan,
@mhalligan@hachyderm.io avatar

@b9AcE Carnation Revolution, you're right I'd forgotten about that (before my time). That + Romania seem to have been good.

What's funny is the EU could have used those 8 million refugees to help shore up their population crash. Go figure. They're a boon to the economy here.

mhalligan,
@mhalligan@hachyderm.io avatar

@b9AcE Well GenX failed to do anything, Millenials don't seem too interested, maybe the next generation will do something, but I won't live long enough to see that come into fruition, sadly.

Hipsters who threaten to leave America if Trump wins don’t understand that they have two options for migration: Marry, someone for a visa or spend $500k-$1million on a golden visa.

It’s a herculean effort just to get a bank account in another country.

Work visas are only available for STEM positions if you are recognized as being the very top of your field.

We aren’t really welcome in other countries. America is all we have, If we lose it, we lose eveything.

Nearly 20 years ago, I made a Craigslist post looking for a roommate.

This guy named Justin responded saying he wasn't looking for a roommate, but he liked my ad and the interests and music I'd listed and thought we might make good friends.

I ended up exchanging a series of emails with him and he was really cool and interesting.

At some point, I learned his last name was Franchi, so, being the absolute creep that I am, I googled his name and came up with a series of articles and bulletins about how Justin Franchi was wanted by the FBI for terrorism.

I was like WTF? but I was so curious about this guy so I continued talking. I brought it up to my friends and one was like "Yo, stop talking to that guy!" and the other was like "Keep talking! There's a REWARD!"

I was like "Y'all, I’m no narc. Besides, he's an 'ECO terrorist' so maybe he's not the bad guy?"

My friends were now even more invested than I was so we pored over his well-written yet strangely cryptic emails trying to figure out details on his whereabouts, reading into EVERYTHING as if it had a secret meaning.

At some point he said he would be "Coming from the west" and we were like "WTF, we're in Michigan, he could be ANYWHERE!"

He eventually gave me enough information to figure out that this Justin Franchi was just a normal guy from a suburb of Detroit and just happened to share a name with an eco terrorist on the FBI's most wanted list.

Even though I was no longer going to get a reward, I ended up meeting him and he was super cool and I remember hanging out and driving around in my Jetta listening to Swedish indie pop and we remained friends for several years until I moved to Chicago and changed my phone number and lost contact.

Just wanted to say hi (if you're out there) Justin Franchi (the indie pop one, not the terrorist one).

Just as a friendly reminder for anyone not aware:

The British press is not our friend. They, as a rule, do not publish anything, ever, favorable about trans folks, because those who control their content would very much prefer that we didn't exist.

So, if a reporter for, say, The Guardian wants to talk to you?

Don't.

mhalligan,
@mhalligan@hachyderm.io avatar

@Impossible_PhD honestly I have never heard a british accent mention trans people in a non-discriminatory way. It seems like if someome is british and their voice is being recorded, they are required by law to make a negative joke about trans people.

Especially the tall asshole on the british car shows. Dude is obsessed.

When I see people cheering #Iran's attack on Israel last week, all I can think about is how Iran shot down a Ukrainian passenger airline in Tehran, blamed Israel and then began manufacturing suicide drones for russia to use in their genocide in #Ukraine.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukraine_International_Airlines_Flight_752

I have a lot of respect for Ukrainian refugees here in Turkey.

If I were Ukrainian, I do not think I would have their restraint and tolerance towards the privileged russians and iranians living here.
