mathieugotteland, to Israel

We commemorate today 30 years passed since the #genocide of the #Tutsi in #Rwanda. There, not unlike several other nations, including #Israel, #Germany, or #Cambodia, mass atrocities have come to define national consciousness and politics.

Nevertheless, the last (few) year(s) have taught us that not only genocide is not and shall not be a thing of the past, it continues to be belittled and ignored, re- #Africa especially.

mathieugotteland,

Relatively high-profile genocides in #Ukraine, the #Gaza strip and #Myanmar have come to the public’s attention thanks to cases at the International Court of Justice (#ICJ).

mathieugotteland,

An African country, The #Gambia, has brought the case against #Myanmar in support of the #Rohingya as far back as 2019. Support however, has only come from Western countries and one sole Muslim country, the #Maldives. Some of the fiercest advocates of the Palestinians, such as #Malaysia, have deported and violated the fundamental rights of Rohingya refugees.

#UN call for a ceasefire in #Sudan without any hope of compliance

Yesterday, the UN Security Council (#UNSC) adopted resolution 2724 at the initiative of the #UK, the penholder on Sudan, by 14 votes in favour, #Russia abstaining. It called for the warring parties to allow for the free entry of humanitarian aid, respect of international humanitarian law and the Jedda declaration, as well as a cessation of hostilities during Ramadan.

#SouthAfrica v. #Israel: An appetite for strong, principled African voices

During the war of aggression by #Russia in #Ukraine, regarding wars and interventions on the African continent, and yet again after the attacks by #Hamas on 7 October and the Israeli retaliation since, many have spoken of the double standards of Western countries, an easy argument, yet sadly well-founded in practice.

mathieugotteland,

Few talk about the obvious other side of that particular coin: the glaring double standards of every other country on Earth, the last of which is certainly not #SouthAfrica.

mathieugotteland,

As if, either because of the image those Western governments want to give of themselves, or worse because the rest of the world looks up to them to those same countries to champion human rights and democracy, justice and accountability, peace and security out of selflessness and the goodness of their hearts, giving non-Western countries a licence to follow "realistically" their "national interest".

mathieugotteland,

#SouthAfrica has been known recently for its utter contempt of international justice, receiving Sudanese dictator Bashir and inviting Russian warmonger Putin while the International Criminal Court (#ICC) had issued a warrant for both of their arrests, on accounts of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

mathieugotteland,

Clearly, #SouthAfrica has a tendency to look at international justice and atrocity crimes through the lense of geopolitics and historical ties, giving her sympathy, in one case, to #Russia, and in the other, to #Palestine, for these reasons and none other.

mathieugotteland,

And yet, her principled stance at the International Court of Justice #ICJ yesterday will echo through history as one of the proudest moments for #SouthAfrica in the international stage, one enhancing her prestige, her standing, thus also increasing her power and her influence.

mathieugotteland,

That is, at least, if, unlike the Western countries Africans often and rightly scorn on the same account, she attunes her actions with her newfound principles. She has failed to intervene alongside 32 other states in #Ukraine v. #Russia, and on 15 November alongside 7 other states in The #Gambia v. #Myanmar, leaving the African country alone on the continent to stand in court against that particular genocide.
