There is no silver bullet solution to mitigating the harm caused by . We need masks, clean air, vaccines, treatments and more. None of these things are perfect, and none alone are sufficient to prevent all the harm being caused. We need them all. Keep speaking up for layers or protections.

Scientists tend to think that science communication is linear: you can do good science communication or you can do bad science communication. But as this pandemic has shown, you can actually be great at communicating science, but support harmful policies.

luckytran,
@luckytran@med-mastodon.com avatar

Someone who is competent at communicating science but supports harmful policies is perhaps the most dangerous type of science communicator because they are leveraged by people in power to downplay ongoing harm and injustice.

Masks and ventilation work best together. Ventilation helps reduce virus hanging in the air. But even with great ventilation, you can still get from close contact. Here, masks help. Sometimes you are only able to do one or the other, but the best practice is always layers!

It's unacceptable that some hospitals are now telling patients that they cannot ask staff members to wear a mask. What happened to "do no harm"?

While politicians are rushing to declare the end of the #COVID "emergency," here's what scientists are telling us:

"A forecast from one widely regarded scientist pegged the risk at a more alarming level, suggesting a 40 percent chance of an omicron-like wave."

https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2023/05/05/covid-forecast-next-two-years/

Politicians will use the end of the #COVID emergency as an excuse to do nothing. But what they really should be doing is shifting to long-term strategies to mitigate ongoing death & harm:

1️⃣Normalize masks
2️⃣Clean indoor air
3️⃣Develop better vaccines
4️⃣Fund #LongCOVID treatments

luckytran,
@luckytran@med-mastodon.com avatar

Declaring the end of the #COVID emergency doesn't mean that the pandemic has ended or harm isn't continuing.

It means governments should shift from emergency responses like lockdowns & border controls to sustainable measures like masks, cleaning the air, vaccines & treatments.

Scientists: #COVID-19 is continuing to kill and cause illness for millions of people

Politicians: Declare public health emergencies over

Also scientists: #ClimateChange change will kill and cause illness for millions of people

Politicians: Continue burning fossil fuels

Throughout history, when something stops threatining the rich, elites declare the emergency over. But in reality, the threat doesn't cease for many, and due to lack of urgency, the most vulnerable are left to die. This happened with #AIDS, it's happening with #COVID, and it will happen with #climate.

If thousands are dying every week, millions have developed chronic illness, and many more are being excluded from fully participating in society due to government abandonment, that isn't the end of an emergency. In truth, it's the beginning of a new long-term emergency.

Walensky is resigning from the CDC, effective June 30. Over 700,000 Americans have died from #COVID-19 under her watch.

You can order 8 free #COVID tests online here. They are covered by Medicare and private insurance.

Walgreens: https://www.walgreens.com/findcare/covid19/otc

In the UK they are stopping people who are wearing a mask from voting. It’s unacceptable to exclude high risk people from democracy.

Hospitals are no longer required to report hospital-acquired COVID to CDC, as the US goes into full #COVID denial.

When experts say "this is, unfortunately, the new normal," it's important to add that the "new normal" means continuing high levels of death, chronic illness, and exclusion of high risk and immunocompromised people from society. The "new normal" is unacceptable.

On May Day, a reminder that fighting for workers' rights also means fighting for workplace #COVID protections like sick pay, ventilation, free PPE, and more.

luckytran,
@luckytran@med-mastodon.com avatar

High risk, immunocompromised, and disabled people are workers. If your labor organizing doesn't include #COVID protections, you are not fighting for the rights of all workers.

Minimizers have confidently asserted #COVID doesn't spread in schools, workplaces, on public transport, in hospitals etc.

Yet they've also said there's nothing we can do to stop COVID spread. Where is COVID spreading then?

Minimizers will lie profusely to advance their agenda.

#LongCOVID patients are walking out of studies because doctors are refusing to wear a mask. All patients have the right to access healthcare safely. Healthcare workers have the responsibility to do no harm.

The CDC is saying their superspreading event is no big deal because #COVID is everywhere.

Yet they also canceled trainings, paid for isolation, staff have access to tests, treatment etc.

COVID may seem like no big deal if you have resources, but this isn’t the case for many.
