Passed 67K on the WIP today, that is not counting the big chapter I have set aside to paste in after this one which should give me a nice word count jump... moving along slowly...

laceknitted,

@quartzen awesome! Congratulations!

EOFY sales are dangerous...lol. First order arrived and there's more on the way.
Got plans for more shawls - looks like my DILs and granddaughters will be getting shawls for Xmas 😜

Sitting on the porch with neighbors a few weeks ago discussing #vegetarian #cooking, one of my favorite people says the best and most reliably delicious cookbook she ever had was Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home. I ordered a copy on Thriftbooks.com and they sent me one with someone else's tabs still all through it, which I love! I wish there were actual written notes. I know that's sacrilegious to some but I write in all my cookbooks. #bookstodon @bookstodon

@kaylee @bookstodon @hollie @izzyamar @austern @willaful I love this so much! This is why I will always love physical books

Currently reading The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia McKillip for the first time, and no idea how I’ve missed it to this point. Do people have suggestions on which of her other works I should check out next? #Bookstodon

laceknitted,

@kimu I LOVE Patricia McKillip! My favorites of hers are the Riddlemaster series.

About 5 years ago my sister lost a book of poetry (William Blake), so recently she decided to replace it and ordered a second hand copy on eBay. It arrived today.

It's got her handwritten notes in it. It's hers.

@MikeMorris Chills!

This is a pretty fucking wild paper that came out a few days ago. Language models can use fMRI imagining to read our minds. This has real world medical applications, but I can’t help but worry what will happen when repressive governments, the military, and law enforcement get this kind of technology. This is really straight out of science fiction and I’m not sure it’s getting popular press.

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41593-023-01304-9

laceknitted,

@Mark Incredibly exciting stuff!!!! My impression is that it will be maximally useful for understanding how the brain interprets language, not so much for actual mind-reading since it's not that successful strictly speaking, but I am wildly excited to be living in the future !!!

(scientist in bio/AI but not neuro, terminally optimistic about the Future so take my thoughts with that grain of salt)

laceknitted,

@Mark I would be SO interested to see how well it works on people who speak multiple languages, or are ESL, or any number of other situations! How does it work if a deaf person is watching sign language, or a blind person is reading Braille? Are the same areas of the brain utilized? Is it different because of the nature of the input (visual/tactile)? So many exciting directions!!!

    There is a #fantasy novel, starts fairly standard-ish with a teen male practicing before I think he goes off to train with a wizard. Mostly I remember the author used lots of onomatopoeia, from the first page. So the young man swings a sword and Thhhwaaack. I always thought it was The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan, but I just skimmed a preview and it's not. May have been first in a series. Anyone know which book it is? I probably came across it 1992-2000.

    laceknitted,

    @theotherotherone Hmm ... I can't think what it could be, and I read a LOT of that kind of fantasy lol. Possibly Belgariad?? Thats one of the big classics I haven't read.

    laceknitted,

    @theotherotherone np! It was a long shot haha. I hope you find your book!

    I knew that it would happen.

    I'm on vacation and only a few minutes from my destination is a very cool yarn shop. I spent maybe an hour there today ...

    As a friend of mine says: buying yarn and using yarn are two different hobbies.

    But they are already spoken for. Socks for my partner who loves bright greens, sand to blue for my MIL, green to orange for my mother. The final one for me

    A fibre-y #TBThursday, inspired by OneDrive showing me pictures of purchases from the last time I went to Wonderwool Wales. Here's two batches of fibre that I bought, and the two shawls that I knitted from the yarn I spun it into.

    The rainbow shawl is Rosetta Tharpe (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/rosetta-tharpe) with double the number of stitches, and the blue-grey one is Pizzelle (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/pizzelle-shawl) with a different border, because I like to make things complicated for myself.
