Its awesome to live in a world where libraries offering resources is an established thing. Access is important. Its a big part of why I have chosen to move to and support FOSS.

My GF has been using the Pixel 8 review unit Google gave me for the last 2 weeks. Loves the phone overall, but it heats up like no device I've seen in a decade, especially when you do wireless stuff (downloading files on a mobile network, hotspotting, etc.). Granted we are in tropical Thailand, but 5 mins of this and the phone has to cool down. Also, battery life is meh.

It's crazy how wireless tech is basically the Achilles heel of everyone but Qcomm & Huawei.

keithnator3000,

@Techaltar Sometimes I wonder if we should just try and do less. Like i like my phone as a companion for todo lists and reminders, but don't really care todo fancy image processing. If we collect less telemetry overall we don't need as much battery to be pinging servers. Could a less is more mindset succeed in 2024?

@thelinuxcast So are you going to be settling on #opensuse as a sort of home #distro when not hopping?

I used to be pretty good and disciplined about it, but I have been feeling dread to pick up books and projects that I used to not have.

We all now that is under attack, thanks to the giant amount of data being collected by any and every company online.

But this data collection is also the biggest threat to being online, which is further reinforced by plenty of laws being passed, to make sure your government knows exactly what you’re doing or talking about.

So let’s look at the fast approach on death of online anonymity:

My favorite @librewolf issue:

https://codeberg.org/librewolf/issues/issues/770

"Add support for MacPorts #770"

"Since Homebrew is supported why not Macports too?"

Me: a MacPorts maintainer, "maybe because MacPorts actually builds things from source and Homebrew thinks its OK to just be a wrapper to installing a DMG?"

e.g. https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-cask/blob/56d6d85d58a73a2b481cd5d58216296dd4239e63/Casks/f/flightgear.rb

Bad example?

Well here's the Homebrew cask for LibreWolf itself:
https://github.com/Homebrew/homebrew-cask/blob/56d6d85d58a73a2b481cd5d58216296dd4239e63/Casks/l/librewolf.rb

Again it's just a wrapper to installing a DMG!

That's not building jack it.sh from source. I guess it does have a little smarts insomuch as it will determine if it is Intel or Apple Silicon (meanwhile, MacPorts still supports PPC/G4/G5/etc. vintage systems. Because: it actually BUILDS THINGS FROM SOURCE, it's not a precompiled binary distribution platform.).

What a bad joke Homebrew is.

Alas, LibreWolf's build instructions are uhhh, well they don't build on macOS, they cross compile from ???

I mean there are the not so convincing notes on building from source here:
https://codeberg.org/librewolf/source

But also linked from there is this:

https://gitlab.com/librewolf-community/browser/macos

Which reads: "Archived project! Repository and other project resources are read-only"

I sincerely have no idea how people on macOS build LibreWolf from source, from the project documentation itself. Homebrew, is of zero assistance, because Homebrew: also does not build LibreWolf from source.

What's wrong with just wrapping the DMG?

It kind of sucks that we do not stagger to ease rush hours. Would be nice if we are going to be people who do not have to be so that can suck slightly less.

@thelinuxcast

I once tried #opensuse but didnt quite vibe with it and your temping me into another distro hop.

Do you think it has grown on you enough to be a main stay (at least on a serious pc that you want to keep consisten)?

Have you found any suseism that bugged you? Like since they use rpm like #fedora but that does not mean they are the exact same - like using a #debian dep on #ubuntu can be sketchy.

Also cool to see the you're a historian.

keithnator3000,

@thelinuxcast I didn't get to use YaST much, but I did enjoy it a lot - at least conceptually.

I just got my @PINE64 Pinebook Pro and I am super impressed! For about $200 this is AMAZING! I reinstalled Manjaro with XFCE to be lighter and used the Manjaro-ARM-Installer to reinstall it, and even encrypted the filesystem. Added a 500GB NVMe I had laying around so I could dump movies and stuff to it. Perfect for light weight document work and media use for my travels. #Linux #OpenSource #cybersecurity #infosec #laptop #review

If you’re like me, you started using Linux with . And while I’d argue it’s still a good choice today, they have made a few decisions you might not like.

But if you don’t want to re-learn another distro, without using something you’re no longer comfortable with, where do you go?

Well, here’s a list of distros you can move to if you know and like the Ubuntu base, but you don’t like Ubuntu as a distro anymore:

https://youtu.be/EzNiiyahH68

keithnator3000,

@thelinuxEXP I really liked the points made in the video. A few years back I was on the fence about derivatives because I was not sure they were all that special. I was getting a laptop from #System76 and was planning to do some distro hopping, but with the semester starting in a few days I opted to stick with pop. I have to say I do like their take on things. Quite pumped for #CosmicDE.

It's wild to me that #Microsoft built #Windows without a system for installing and uninstalling #software. They just let App devs figure that out. You had to ship "InstallShield" just to do simple stuff. Then hope the devs' uninstaller removes all the files.

keithnator3000,

@schizanon This would be before my time, but I think back in the day if you wanted a program you would plug the floppy with it in and load it. If we carry over that mindset then there is no need to uninstall.

Now I am curious about what the real answer might be.

keithnator3000,

@schizanon Also helps to not have a registry that needs to have entries removed and could bork the computer.

I had already taken a superficial look at macOS, a year ago, but now, I spent 30 days with it, as my main OS, on an M1 MacBook Pro.

And boy am I glad this is over, and glad to be back on #Linux!

Here are my conclusions about the hardware, the software, and the general experience of using a Mac as a Linux user:

https://youtu.be/0saKpm5g8iU

keithnator3000,

@thelinuxEXP I feel quite similar. I was thinking the other day if i had to switch away from Linux would I pick Windows or macOS. I feel somewhat 50/50 and the Apple Silicon is compelling. I think what might eek a win for Windows is that i could at least pick hardware like #framework and use WSL.

Also did you try out any of the macOS package managers like #homebrew or #macports ?

They support , , they have more laptops, and pretty much the same repairability as a Framework, without the generational upgrades:
