I had already taken a superficial look at macOS, a year ago, but now, I spent 30 days with it, as my main OS, on an M1 MacBook Pro.

And boy am I glad this is over, and glad to be back on #Linux!

Here are my conclusions about the hardware, the software, and the general experience of using a Mac as a Linux user:

@thelinuxEXP I was kind of hoping you would have done a report on running a Fedora Arm VM on top of MacOS X. Like using Mac OS only as an hypervisor for the performance benefits of the Mac hardware.

I understand the experience might not be so great when plugging an external monitor but in a single monitor setup I guess running linux full screen might be usable and make you forget the downsides of MacOS

thelinuxEXP,

@oook I Will instead install Asahi and Fedora Asahi, which should be a more interesting experiment!

oook,
@oook@im-in.space avatar

@thelinuxEXP I think both are interesting. From what I understand there are still a number of important things missings ro be able to run asahi as a main OS.

@thelinuxEXP mostly agree with your points. I actually love the touchpad on my MacBook air, couldn't believe it was a vibration until I turned it off. Great hardware overall. Expect for only one external display 🤦‍♂️
But wm is a disaster. Worst feature: when you click a notification that takes you to a virtual desktop "far" from your current one, it reorders the desktops so that the one you were on when clicking the notification is now next to the one you've landed on. How irritating!

pedro,

@thelinuxEXP no OS would ever survive the test you gave it, since there won't be ever a possibility that the knowledge, tricks and habits learned in one interface could be carried over another interface, unless it was built precisely to be a clone. Bring an user trained on macOS user to whatever other OS interface and you will get the same leven of frustration

@pedro It is absolutely not a matter of knowledge. 30 days is enough to learn how something works and get used to its quirks, if they’re not giant flaws.

Here, they are. The way macOS handles window management is fundamentally broken if you don’t want to use all your apps fullscreen on their own virtual desktop. The only other alternative is to use arcane keyboard shortcuts that are never explained, or to use third party apps. Other OSes are way more discoverable.

@thelinuxEXP interesting video, not normally something I would watch, but interesting all the same. Interesting to see that your into LORE on podcast , I caught a glimpse during the video.

@thelinuxEXP I don’t know if it’s just me, but the video feels a lot more „hectic“ than what you usually do (especially during the first minutes?). Voice, effects, A- and B-roll, everything. Of all the videos you made recently (talking months to perhaps even years) it was the only one which was really hard for me to watch entirely. Maybe I’m just too tired this evening 🤷‍♂️. Nevertheless, thank you very much for all the content you put out! 😊

mmk2410,
@mmk2410@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxEXP ok, I just watched the first minutes of the NixOS video and then again the start of the MacOS video and I’m quite certain to conclude, that the Nix one is more calm as well as more comfortable and enjoyable to watch. But perhaps that’s just my subjective feeling.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@mmk2410 Yeah, the macOS one was made by a third party while I’m on vacation. It’s not bad, but the consensus seems to be that their editing style is too fast paced and “noisy”

milesmcbain,
@milesmcbain@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxEXP I hope someone has suggested installing Raycast and letting that be your interface to everything! It’s what I did, and now I hardly think about MacOS.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@milesmcbain I had never heard about it, but I’ll absolutely look into it!

@thelinuxEXP @frumble I really can’t bear to watch the whole video. Rambling about not configuring the menu bar to be displayed in fullscreen mode in settings. Not using Cmd+Maximize. Not mentioning Homebrew as an alternative to cavemanship. That‘s where I stopped.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@yahe @frumble “I can’t bear to watch someone pointing out the stupid defaults that can be fixed by knowing the system by heart or installing third party package managers” is a bad take ;)

Yes, it can be fixed. Should it need to be fixed? No. That’s the point of the video. The options are impossible to find (couldn’t find them in 30 days, and I can find anything in KDE’s settings), and home brew is NOT something most mac users will ever use either.

yahe,
@yahe@chaos.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP @frumble Well, you introduced the video as not being superficial but, unfortunately, you didn’t deliver. 🤷‍♀️

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@yahe @frumble In your opinion. Judging from the comments, and by my own reckoning, I did. This video isn’t and was never billed at being a look at how to fix Mac OS problems.

Carbonara,

@thelinuxEXP as you said at the end of the video, despite the worst OS ever for productivity, those laptops are too good. Can’t ignore the fact I can go trough a full work day and still have 30% of battery. Hope to see a Asahi Linux beta soon

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@Carbonara The laptops are really amazing these days. No longer overpriced for the power, performance and battery life. Although a big chunk of e waste still, with no upgrade ability or repairability…

@thelinuxEXP I’ve used Linux daily for over 20 years as a software developer. I decided to give desktop Linux a try recently (Ubuntu 22.04) and after completely failing to accomplish something as simple as remapping keyboard keys I gave up and went back to macOS.

    @GyD Utiliser un raccourci clavier pour pouvoir simplement maximiser un programme, c’est n’est pas une bonne UX ;)

    crumbs,

    @thelinuxEXP I’m actually surprised how minor your complaints are compared to the productivity roadblocks I’ve encountered as a lifelong Mac user trying to use Windows for work for the past few months. You miss minimizing apps from the dock, I miss apps using the same goddamn shortcut for “Quit”.

    And that search bar in the MacOS Help menu isn’t just handy for new users, it’s a pillar of my workflow in applications I’ve been using for decades. I still feel it and Spotlight like a phantom limb.

    tunix,

    @thelinuxEXP this is the feeling I have on a daily basis as I have to use Mac for work. The only thing that makes Mac better is the app integration which is way ahead of Linux in many cases, especially if you're using flatpak apps. I suffer with 1password not being integrated with Firefox.

    nemiryah,

    The fun thing is that Mac OS used to be great at those things you (and I) found annoying. 🙃

    For example, in 10.4 Tiger you could minimize windows by clicking on the dock and if it was a video or game, you could even see the thumbnail playing. With Exposé and Spaces, you could manage your windows in a click.

    What hasn't been a thing ever is the complete keyboard on laptops, a wasted opportunity for the Pro line IMHO.

    In any case, I'm glad that Apple changed because that brought me to Linux!

    mcspadden,

    @thelinuxEXP can you run Linux on the new Apple Silicon(s)?

    DavidsCreation,

    @thelinuxEXP Macs aren't that bad but it depends on which one you use. My main PC, which is a gaming PC, runs on Linux Mint, but I have a MacBook Air from 2016 and it works good for me. I just use it for editing and music, though.

    pablor,
    @pablor@mastodon.social avatar

    @thelinuxEXP Um, can I have your Mac now?

    @thelinuxEXP ahah. Good! Anyway, it's always good to have various experiences

    @thelinuxEXP Nice that you reviewed different systems, but until Apple devices are actually repairable, that entire ecosystem is dead to me.

    If I buy something, I expect to actually OWN it and FIX it when necessary. I wouldn't buy a car which required me to go back to the dealer to replace a tire, no difference with a computer.

    @thelinuxEXP I have a Macbook and for simple recreational use it's great, better than Windows or any Linux I've used on a laptop. This comes down to the fine touchpad, which I use to to flip between a few full-screened apps. Nothing else I've used is as comfortable and smooth. Gnome on this hardware would be delightful.

    More complex window manipulation than that? MacOS fall short.

    The excellent touchpad loses its relevancy using MacOS on a desktop.

    keithnator3000,

    @thelinuxEXP I feel quite similar. I was thinking the other day if i had to switch away from Linux would I pick Windows or macOS. I feel somewhat 50/50 and the Apple Silicon is compelling. I think what might eek a win for Windows is that i could at least pick hardware like #framework and use WSL.

    Also did you try out any of the macOS package managers like #homebrew or #macports ?

    gazan,

    @thelinuxEXP great video! I use Mac primarily because of work and I can tell you those pain points you mentioned are all present even after years of use. I use a tiling window manager to mitigate them but it's just not the same. I don't know if I agree with the hardware critiques though, I haven't seen anything like a MacBook tbh.
