@hotdogsladies If I were still allowed to speak in public about the Web (which, obviously, as withered old crone, would be ridiculous), I would still cite:

The same mistakes we made in the 90s are considered brilliant innovations 30 years later. Only now with design systems. And frameworks. And containers. And pipelines. Whatever they are.

Shouldn't the nurse be here with my pills by now?

@Impossible_PhD 🫂 Same here. Couldn't even fly to Sydney in boymode to say goodbye because it was peak pandemic. Even if I got through the hospital doors, Mum was insisting - as though one of us didn't understand the situation - "He wouldn't want you to see him like this. Come down when he's better." Had to watch the funeral online.

I dream about him multiple times a week. I think he would have liked to see me happy at last.

Journal: Baseline progressive enhancement

If a browser feature can be used as a progressive enhancement, you don’t have to wait for all browsers to support it.

Becoming interested in web development (academically, I hasten to add), after a decade away, is a tumble down a rabbit hole into a strange world of unfamiliar frameworks and best practices which, under interrogation, never seem to make much sense. Which is why it is so, so comforting to find that @adactio is still, after all these years, writing lucidly and perfectly reasonably about simple fundamental principles like progressive enhancement.

Was interested, toward the end of that conversation, to hear my own experiences with validated. I've been running my own mail server(s) for 20 years and Gmail is becoming increasing troublesome.

I don't want to just throw up my hands and concede that we're heading towards a world where Google and Microsoft only accept mail from each other.

Does anybody know of a collection of resources tracking the state of play with email? (I'd Google it, but of course search engines are broken now.)

And isn't that the real tragedy? Won't somebody think about the brands?

I concede the quote is out of context, but even in context, what sort of psychopath can say such a thing?

I stumbled upon #MMT almost exactly 10 years ago. It is the most important thing you need to understand if you want to fix the world. Stephanie Kelton is the best at explaining it. I was at the recording of this, and just in awe at her ability to weave her way through the questions. A brilliant teacher.

My mum will be in town for a few days from tomorrow. First time since I came out to her a month or two ago.

Trying not to worry. She seemed to take it well, but lately I've been wondering. This is the acid test.

I want to have a good relationship with her because she's pushing eighty and she's had a pretty average boomer housewife life. She's smart and still full of potential, and I would like to be a bad influence on her.

Also she's my mum and I love her.

katyswain,
@katyswain@mastodon.social avatar

Saw my Mum and her best friend into a taxi to the airport this morning.

Now doubting I'd made my situation entirely clear to her. Or perhaps I'd vastly overestimated prior knowledge.

Neither of them seemed surprised or alarmed when I met them with hair & makeup & curve-revealing clothes, but I got deadnamed the whole time and several times she even felt compelled to blurt out to strangers "we're from $SuburbanHell, but my son [gestures to a mortified yours truly] lives in Melbourne."

katyswain,
@katyswain@mastodon.social avatar

I don't know what happened. I think I may have f**ked up the coming out process, but I'm too dim to see how.

Been consoling myself with "Oh, well. One step at a time".

Still, it was nice to see her.

I'm sure it's just a particular instance of the general phenomenon of wanting a parent to understand when they don't have the resources to do that, so you just have to be grateful for what's on offer.

Someday, I’ll share my recipe for Hillbilly Charcuterie.

It boasts a bold and rustic flavor profile and should always be served on a costly paper plate.

Makes it feel even fancier.

katyswain,

@hotdogsladies Now to my Antipodean eye, it's missing big cubes of cheese-flavoured plasticine, but otherwise no notes. The uncanny hillbilly/bogan resemblance is a remarkable example of convergent evolution.

katyswain,

@timrichards I asked the very same question about a year ago. My mum noticed them at Emerald Lake after a trip on the Puffing Billy. There's lots in the Botanic Gardens, and I've noticed a small population in Carlton Gardens.

I presume the more colourful ones are male. Photographs don't quite capture how that breast plumage sparkles enticingly in the sunlight. Can't lie; if I were a swamphen I'd be totally up for it.

Never seen one as striking as that. I think you've found the swamphen Fabio.

@Daojoan Yes, you have to find buttons, sockets, etc. by trial and error. But the thing looks so cool!

'“It’s the wild colour scheme that freaks me,” said Zaphod whose love affair with this ship had lasted almost three minutes into the flight, "Every time you try to operate on of these weird black controls that are labelled in black on a black background, a little black light lights up black to let you know you’ve done it. What is this? Some kind of galactic hyperhearse?"' - Douglas Adams

Victoria gave free fishing rods to school kids to try and convert them to fishing. Did it work? (www.abc.net.au)

The state government distributed thousands of free fishing rods to primary school kids in an attempt to engage young Victorians in fishing, and while some kids love their rods, others have ended up on Facebook marketplace. So, did the program work?

katyswain,
@katyswain@mastodon.social avatar

@MHLoppy If you have at least one cat (more fun with multiple) and a reasonably long hallway or quite large room:

  1. Throw away any fish hooks (important).
  2. Tie a cat toy to the end of the line.
  3. Summon your cat(s) and cast away!

The object is to avoid letting anybody latch on to the bait. It's a much more fast-paced sport than regular fishing. Endless fun.

Well, there we go. Sent off the email to my Mum. Assuming she's fallen asleep in front of the telly, tomorrow morning she'll be dealing with losing a deadbeat son and gaining a dotty old lady.

Gulp.

katyswain,
@katyswain@mastodon.social avatar

Well, Mum is fine. She phoned to make sure I'm okay, referencing at first the wild weather, then mentioning that she got my email, asking again whether I'm okay, then making sure we're still good for her visit next month for the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.

So I've still a date with my mum at what must surely be the Southern Hemisphere's largest annual gathering of old ladies.

If that's not a formal initiation, I don't know what is.

Off for a bit of a weep now. #TransJoy

katyswain,
@katyswain@mastodon.social avatar

@hauntedhideaway @doctorwho There was some scheduling issue in series 21 (I forget what it was; probably just the BBC trying to kill the show), that led to Resurrection of the Daleks being broadcast with the four episodes in two two-episode chunks.

The story at the time was that this was judged such an accidental success that the subsequent year's stories followed that format. But producer JN-T was ever one to spin bad news as a triumph.

katyswain,
@katyswain@mastodon.social avatar

@hauntedhideaway @doctorwho Ah! Wikipedia says the scheduling conflict was the Winter Olympics and the format change was already in the works. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resurrection_of_the_Daleks#Story_format Though the source is the Beeb itself, so take it with pinch of salt (which also wards off the Fendahl, so always handy to keep about oneself).
