TIL that the scp command does not, by default, compress files it transfers, and that you need to add the -C flag to make it do that, and by doing that I have sped up my transfer speed about 40x, and without this knowledge I have probably wasted literally days of my life waiting for things in the past.

Been working through more of the Rust book, and I have questions. So many questions. I find it incredibly frustrating when concepts are introduced and not explained - "don't worry we will explain this later". They even make explicit in the book's introduction that they are going to do this, and later chapters will explain things glossed over in earlier chapters. But I do not deal well with this at all, it perpetually leaves me thinking I'm stupid or have missed something.

Well I mean about 3.6 billion people are using it on their phone right now and probably don't even know about it, so yeah https://fedi.nano.lgbt/objects/d8041dcb-3b9f-4172-a129-a22e103209de

Is there literally any fucking media I engage in that doesn't come with a really fucking dumb blokey gambling ad, now? Absolutely infuriating. They have now infested the Astronomy Cast podcast.

Amazon Prime wants... $30.00... to rent... a movie? Compared to $34.00 to buy? What? Is going! On?

Me when I can't find a parking space near the school: park half a kilometre away, walk through sleet and snow

Everyone else apparently: park across driveways, park across school crossing, double park, who gives a shit, nothing is real.

Right. It has happened. My institution now wants to develop teaching materials for a course by literally just running my papers through an LLM to "simplify" them. Have told the person requesting this my opinions on this idea.

Today playing with OpenLayers and VectorTiles and colours and Javascript and against all odds it's actually doing what I want.

I keep hearing about this deluge of spam, but I have not seen a single one. And for that I praise the sysop.

Write code for my own purposes, put it on GitHub, more or less forget about it.

Any #remotesensing peeps know a good source of global methane emission mapping data? TROPOMI's only been up there since 2018, there is a Canadian satellite SCISAT-1 which has been been around since 2003 but it's not really an imaging satellite, I get the impression it looks through the atmosphere towards the sun rather than at the ground. Is there anything else out there with a record of at least a couple of decades?

Yes, it me, the ecologist who just said "yes sure I can build you a progressive web app that works offline but will upload field data to the internet when it gets a phone signal again".

Now I am just researching how I actually do that. I never learn.

TFW you need to choose a new password for a service, and every password you try is "too similar to a previous password" and you know they could only possibly know that if they were storing a whole bunch of your old passwords in plaintext. Good job, once again, Australian Government Computering.

my daughter, 8yo, wants to try playing around making 2D animations in some kind of software, she's essentially talking about ragdoll animation I think (eg. Being able to move limbs and tween between them, rather than having to draw each frame from scratch on top of a transparency).

All my Googling for this just brings me to Unity or Blender, which seem like..overkill for this task for a kid. Does anyone have any other simpler suggestions?

After having been reminded, on here, that VS Code has a very cool remote access via ssh feature, I'm playing around with in it, running code on remote servers.

Good: When I run code remotely, it sends back nice graphs that display in VS Code!

Bad: the lintr package is install by default and is horrible, guide to turn it off doesn't work, all it does it make me nervous by alerting me to 367 places in my code where I have missed a space after a comma or something, but does not let me click a button to automatically fix all those apparently unforgivable mistakes
