Every positive change in society since the divine right of kings is a front in the culture war. It's just that some of them (as yet) remain far from the frontlines.

Weird question: can anyone recommend an email hosting service that is more or less just an inbox/outbox? No groupware or collaboration, just spin up a bunch of accounts and integrate them with your own suite of apps?

I’m really interested in using Nextcloud as a full replacement for Google Workspace in our organization. It’s really good! There are ways to automatically provision accounts in there, through SSO or other kinds of integration, so that new people get access on their first login.

But, almost every hosted email service is kind of trying to be their own Google Workspace alternative, with bells and whistles that I don’t really need.

BlueMail maybe? That works well on my personal website, not sure if it can be installed on NextCloud.

If you don't mind me asking, what (broadly speaking) are your respective backgrounds that led to you both moving round a lot and changing schools >yearly etc?

jaystephens,
@jaystephens@mastodon.social avatar

@Baku woah that's an interesting backstory thanks. I was thinking like "me=unstable parents, him=military parents" level of detail lol.
I was asking coz I've noticed that I (child of hippies, always movin') have a lot in common with children of military folks (always posted elsewhere, always movin'), and wondered if you'd hit a parallel dynamic.

I can't figure out if mastodon is a high context culture or not. People seem to be expected to give long introductions and do a lot of identity/positionality disclosure, but also an enormous reply guy culture which is defined by low context drive-by. Conversational turn-taking is extremely low compared to other platforms ime, but depth-seeking is high. What an interesting mix.

*obviously, these experiences are all situated within my own network effects, and I'm not well networked here.

jaystephens,
@jaystephens@mastodon.social avatar

@grimalkina yeah same weird mix here.
My part of the birdsite was an outlier in similar ways though.

jaystephens,
@jaystephens@mastodon.social avatar

@grimalkina I curated both heavily so if your experience here feels weird I can only conclude my best curation efforts converge on that same weridness lol

@StillIRise1963 once again for those at the back of the room: voting for a party isn't finding an ideal partner who matches your worldview, it's picking a direction of movement from the status quo.

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

Background TV as I wind down my work day.

@onelson honestly episode # order isn't a bad viewing order imvho...

But I'm not really a huge star wars fan, so I'm allowed to think that.

Do you agree with Aristotle that are three types of government: monarchy, aristocracy, and democracy?

#EvanPoll #poll

jaystephens,
@jaystephens@mastodon.social avatar

@evan
qualified yes: It's one of the best taxonomies, but there are other equally good ways to slice it.

jaystephens,
@jaystephens@mastodon.social avatar

@travisfw @evan that 3-way split is about who's in charge (king, nobles, [all] people). It's a few-many axis essentially.
Other good axes to slice the pie along include:

a technocracy-ideology axis (how China has moved on that axis over last few decades is fascinating).

a force-persuasion axis (whoever's got the power, do they keep it more out of murdoch media type persuasion, or N. Korea type fear of brute force?)

I've enjoyed your account, but it doesn't feel fully part of the fediverse because it doesn't have conversations.

Yeah... I'm a100% YIMBY, but the issue I'm seeing for Straya is our status quo of large property developers calling the planning shots can't lead to any of the good outcomes some parts have Europe have seen (e.g. Vienna) and instead seem to point towards entrenching the growing divide between those who can afford a house and those who can't.

Honest question for white people that don't consider themselves racist:

White nationalists have been vocal about their attacks on DEI. These are literally the same people that talk about Charlottesville, Jan 6th, and ethnic cleansing.

They've laid out exactly how they plan to destroy DEI.

  1. Make false claims that DEI is about giving unqualified Black people an unfair advantage

  2. Work with racist politicians to use this as a pretext to make all DEI programs illegal.

1/n

jaystephens,
@jaystephens@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke I think you are right.
Personally, I have spoken up more than once, but I have also remained silent because of (at different times):

  • fear / cowardice / hesitation
  • not noticing the problem until afterwards then kicking myself
  • inability to speak out in a way I'm confident won't make things worse for the target.

Wifey had an old episode on of where Stabler goes undercover to buy a hooker. Right when a cash exchange is made his team comes in to arrest her. I think it would’ve been more entertaining if she was also undercover from a different department and tried to arrest him. That would be an entertaining to expand into a book: 2 undercover cops unknown to each other try to arrest each other. Know if any books like this? @bookstodon
