For lovers of and , Nancy Lawson's essay on what language we have been taught to use is very thought-provoking. Is a lawn well-kept, manicured, pristine -- or undergrown? So many of the used to denigrate a thriving filled with and imply something savage that needs to be beaten into submission: aggressive, weedy, pest, unruly. Let's call them lush, exuberant, and alive!

We have some discouraging news from the Eastern migration of the Monarch butterfly. Surveys of the overwintering grounds found that the #butterflies
occupied less half of the forest they used last year. This year over year drop of 59% makes this the second smallest overwintered population recorded.

Still, they have rebounded before. The best way to help is to stop using herbicides, and plant milkweed and nectar plants.

@mcnees The Chauncy Street exit on the Downtown Crossing MBTA station used to have a wooden escalator. I liked the way the slats felt underfoot. Sometimes, though, the mechanism pulling the steps up would shudder and jerk. I'm not sure, but I think they may have outlasted Calvin and Hobbs. #boston
