The planet Halla looks like it should have been devoured, but a secret in its host star may explain the present.

🪐 According to one of the scenarios astronomers arrived at, Halla may be a new “second generation” planet, writes @DanXHuber (@Sydney_Uni). https://t.co/kVcS815V35

Okay.

The Dutch police just now jemmied my front door, walked into my bedroom, yelled at me, then left after I yelled at them. I admit I had a panic attack, they denied it was Max Hertzdahl from restaurant Jackies who called them in.

Still. Four police agents? When I was assaulted in the street for being trans, it was one agent, two weeks later, who came to take my statement.

Also, I gotta move. My front door was jemmied -- by the police.

@SirTapTap I'm trans, no way anyone is going to listen to me. Besides, small claims courts are not a thing where i live.

Other than the bizarre pro-Series 60 Nokia story has anyone written any kind of story of how the brief glory period of desktop Linux on the smartphone in 2006-2010 caught fire and fell into the sea?

halla,
@halla@fosstodon.org avatar

@mjg59 I'd say it's too late. So much of the source material of the era is gone, like the mailing list where someone called for action to avoid kcalendar getting into Maemo because... I don't remember. My memory is inexact, and the list is gone.

It was a weird and wonderful time. I'm glad I was part of it, but these days I have to admit I would have done better to spend all my time on #krita instead of /maemo/meego.

Not that that would have paid my mortgage, back then, and Nokia did.

@swan_tower I don't think "earning" is the right word? receiving, taking, grabbing oe looting probably work better.

Just saw this about Medium, and Substack hasn't exactly stood emphatically for the LGBT+ community. I hadn't moved to Medium because I really, really like the newsletter function of Substack... but Medium apparently has a newsletter function now too.

Hmm... I really don't like migration--and I'm talking about Stained Glass Woman, for reference--but this isn't nothing.

Thoughts, anyone?

@Impossible_PhD Both substack and medium are icky. Just self-host, like I have done for ages, and share news links everywhere.

@StillIRise1963 I'm 53. When my mom married my dad, she had to leave her teaching job by law. Only five years after I was born, the law changed and she could start teaching again. (This is .nl btw)

Started this ages ago. Then #LongCovid happened and I couldn't paint at all for months. Finished it today.

It's not as good as I wanted, but, hey... I got my paints out for the first time in ages.

Also, first time I actually signed a painting with real name 🙂

As one of Adobe's competitors, being the maintainer of #krita, I was asked to fill in a questionnaire by the @EU_Commission on the upcoming Adobe/Figma merger.

It was long, thorough and very, very clear. Good job 🙂

(Spoiler: I'd say, let's break Adobe up instead of allowing them to gobble up another competitor.)

    I am absolutely dying laughing.

My wife and I go to get some gas this morning and I walk in to pay, wearing a low-cut dress. The cashier lady's eyes almost fall out of their sockets as she goes "Oh my god! Your boobs must be new! They look so good! Can I touch them?"

I am, understandably, somewhat flummoxed here, and manage to squeak out a no.

"Oh, please?" she pleads, hopefully. "I touch a lot of boobs!" At this point my surprise has turned to hysteria, and I can't stop laughing.

@Impossible_PhD That's on the level of the two women who were whispering loudly, while pointing at my wife and me, "at least we're not as obviously a couple as those two!"

Not only did we giggle, the male couple on the other side of our table also broke out into a bout of snickering.

This was in Ghent, Belgium, in the MSK.

why do other trans people have such cool life stories

    I didn't try on my mom's clothes
I didn't hang out with the girls at school
    I didn't play with makeup
    I didn't "act like a girl"
    I didn't hate my name
    I didn't cross dress
I didn't let myself look inwards
I didn't get told "we always suspected" when I came out

    I didn't know

I just felt sad and wrong and I didn't know why.
I was hollow and my emotions didn't make sense
every relationship I tried went sour because I didn't feel anything

if I didn't get that time during covid to really think, I might never have figured it out. I might have gone my entire life as a sad but ok most of the time, guy

it always hurts when I read or hear some trans person's journey as they recount every instance where it was "clearly a sign" and they were just born in the wrong body and they were basically a girl anyway and...

because of this, I just never related to these few trans people I saw in the public eye. I thought of it as this rare disorder that was for therapists to diagnose

it took me a while to realize it wasn't about who I had been. It was about who I wanted to become

    halla,
    @halla@fosstodon.org avatar

@ivy I didn't do any of those either.

Well, my mom's clothes where way too masculine and smelled of tobacco. (I still think it's a bit suspicious she got so much fun out of dressing me up in dress shirts, ties and suits.)

And I did hate my name, but that's because I was named after the then King of Belgium. Literally.

I did get told "I would never have suspected" when I came out, too.

Otoh, I made sure to now and then play a man in our TTRPG, otherwise, things would have gotten suspicious.

Yesterday we published our 2022 Financial Report. When people saw Thunderbird raised $6.4M in 2022 from donations, one question was asked frequently: "Do you have mega-donors?"

Nope. We just have awesome people 💙

Some stats we didn't publish in the report:

-We had 76 donations that were $500 or above, which is less than 1% of total donations.

-95% of our donations were less than $100.

    -The largest donation was €3000.

    -Our average donation amount $15.78.

    Thank you family!

I need books to read to my daughter (9).

She suggests Famous Five but I would like something with a bit more modern "mindset" than the girls always helping in the kitchen and the boys in the barn.

    Ideas?
