Wow. What a nepotistic pit of local rich folk and developers did the mayor swim in. Gross. https://www.ottawaathome.ca/living_article.php?articleID=934&src=theottawan.com

@Auxonic So they wrote an article about themselves and included all their failures along the way? This is success? I've been doing it wrong.

Low property taxes mean that beach lifeguards only work peak summer weeks.

Low property taxes mean that city lifeguards only get paid $18/hour to checks notes literally save lives.

Low property taxes mean that getting your kids into swimming lessons is nearly impossible in .

Low property taxes mean that it’s really hard to have a safe summer day at the beach as a kid.

Low property taxes are part of the reason why some family is having the worst time of their lives right now.

There's a hidden economic benefit to great urban planning in cities: Tourism.

People want to visit good public spaces, with walkable (ideally pedestrianised) main streets, quality public transport, and vibrant local communities.

And good quality urbanism is not just for big cities either:

For #WorldBicycleDay, I’ll post this picture in answer to one of the most frequent questions I get about biking: “But how do you get groceries?” My #CargoBike is large but can hold five full grocery bags up front with no problem, and two more on the back rack if needed. You can do it! It’s easy if you try. #BikeTooter

The family analogy breaks down fairly quickly in today’s tech world. You aren’t disowning family members to keep your stock price high.

I was just thinking back to the mental health screening I had earlier last week with a psychiatric nurse. It just broke my heart to see how overworked she was. Working through lunch, then giving me a callback after 6 PM. Ontario's premier Doug Ford is purposefully making her life miserable so he can show a balanced budget, while lavishing hundreds of millions on land speculators and alcohol purveyors.

I wish I knew how to get through to non-voters that elections are important. #ONPoli #CanPoli

As we already have wildfires going in CA and are set to have scorcher weather Tues - Thu, let me remind folks that not only are N95 masks good for keeping from getting/giving COVID, but also good for filtering smoke from wildfires.

Good to have a supply on hand and to be wearing one.

PSA: (and a question). and pulled two ticks off the kid after a hike in Gatineau park. And you NEED to check all of the little ones, especially parts of genitalia you can’t just visibly check. Both of these dots are ticks but unsure what kind. Does anyone know if there is a drop off location to get these tested? Lymes disease is shit and the risk increases a LOT after 24-36 hrs attached

My “favourite” part of taking the train in Canada is where we slow down to slower than my average cycling speed while a freight train inches by us in the other direction. High speed rail now but actually like yesterday!

Plan for today: drop the kids off and then #OttBike into Gatineau Park at least as far as Chelsea, patio lunch, home in time to relax (and maybe fold laundry 😅) before picking the monsters up again.

This is how you do compressed days, right?

dairpo,
@dairpo@ottawa.place avatar

Biked to Chelsea. Enjoyed a nice wide car free parkway for a large portion of it. Had a delicious lunch. Biked home. All in all a successful day.

I'm about 300m from the gas station and used to schlep these on my shoulder home. Now that I have a wagon, I realize I've been too old for that shit for several years now.

I love my wagon.

dairpo,
@dairpo@ottawa.place avatar

@grivettcarnac @jleiper We have a collapsible wagon that can fit on the longtail footboard. Perfect for a multimodal trip (at leave for the kids, I'm schlepping them in both cases), for example to Mud Lake or elsewhere.

It’s ridiculous we put up with sidewalks being so narrow and overcrowded. There’s plenty of space if we didn’t give the lion’s share to cars

It was clear decades ago that gov't should be using a carrot & stick approach to get landlords and homeowners to prepare their buildings for climate change. This is another case of making poorer people suffer for the profits of the rich. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGPBpK-G0O4 #ClimateChange #Housing

@grivettcarnac @kdorse I'm still a bit gobsmacked that you'll hear people talk about "liberal lockdowns"...when agree or disagree with the policy, the largely conservative premiers made those calls (including some stupidly punitive ones like the latter Ontario park ban).

It makes sense that Ford would call an election because there is no opposition, voter turnout out would probably be the same as last time, the PCs have been using our $$$ non-stop the past few months to highlight their successes and because if PP wins, well there is historical precedent that shows the province would dump his provincial affiliation to the federal https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/alcohol-sales-convenience-stores-ontario-1.7213546

505fred,
@505fred@mastodon.social avatar

@grivettcarnac

It makes sense, I don't really like any of options. Our options are:
Doug Ford
Bonnie Crombie, who isn't going to be better.
Marit Stiles, who is giving narcissistic vibes, see the picture below which is the first picture on the Ontario NDP's website.
Mike Schreiner, supports Lecce's stupid war on students.

I don't want to vote in the election, but probably will. I don't think most voters like me will vote though.
