Stack Overflow announced that they are partnering with OpenAI, so I tried to delete my highest-rated answers.

Stack Overflow does not let you delete questions that have accepted answers and many upvotes because it would remove knowledge from the community.

So instead I changed my highest-rated answers to a protest message.

Within an hour mods had changed the questions back and suspended my account for 7 days.

Diff view of a stack overflow question showing it being changed from the original text to a protest message, then being changed back again by a mod. Protest text reads: Why does OpenAI get to profit from our work? I have removed this question in protest of Stack Overflow's decision to partner with OpenAI. This move steals the labour of everyone who contributed to Stack Overflow with no way to opt-out. OpenAI has a history of flooding the web with inaccurate information and have explicitly stated that they will never pay creators for their work.

@lyonsinbeta @ben AI can’t even tell the truth, so yes it breaks Creative Commons laws and regulations.

firecat,
@firecat@mstdn.social avatar

@ArneBab it still needs to credit people, if anyone can avoid creditable sources then AI problem is only half of the case. Straight up lying about art, music, code and writing is enough for anyone to dislike the software.

firecat,
@firecat@mstdn.social avatar

@ArneBab The EU is not an international law, USA laws and other nations follow different rules which does break Creative Commons laws. OpenAI sells to many nations and OpenAI has broken the law on it.

firecat,
@firecat@mstdn.social avatar

@ArneBab not everything is in EU law, OpenAI has to follow international laws just as Valve Corporation does. Valve tried to make case they don’t have to follow the AU law on refunds. Valve was incorrect because it sold games to Australia people. OpenAI is in the same boat.

In Canada, lightning struck a plane with 550 passengers on board

Shocking footage of a lightning strike on an Air Canada Boeing 777-300 flying from Vancouver to London was accidentally filmed by a Canadian student. According to him, he is studying to be a pilot and often comes to watch planes take off.

After being struck by lightning, the plane with 550 passengers on board continued along its planned route.

Mastodon v4.2.8 has just been released.

On this release Mastodon changes the default registration mode to being closed. Meaning that if you have never changed the registration mode for your server, it will be closed by default.

Also, it introduces a feature that will "automatically require approval for new registrations in the absence of moderators". Meaning that if no user with moderation permission has accessed the server in one week, the registration mode changes to require manual approval.

Earlier this week I made a snarky toot about paying open source maintainers. The snarkyness perhaps covered up the underlying message, which is something I strongly believe in.

Criticizing open source maintainers for figuring out a way to get paid for their — however imperfect the tactic — is wrong.

If we're serious about open source sustainability, we need to be okay with — no, more than that, we need to celebrate — any tactic a maintainer uses to get paid.

https://jacobian.org/2024/feb/16/paying-maintainers-is-good/

firecat,

@jacob until it becomes a problem like Steam’s Proton that absolutely prohibited users from accessing Proton without permission from Valve Corporation.
https://old.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/u3lrtk/is_it_possible_to_run_proton_without_steam/

Then there’s the egomaniac problem that the developer will gain and refuse to accept better quality content because the developer believes their ideal product should stay as is, such is the fate for Renpy because Pytom refuses to add more than just VN.

I get what you’re saying but nothing always ends up as you expect.

    It was hot, the night we burned Chrome.

    You might be thinking “how do you destroy software, the source code must have thousands of copies?”. Well, the purpose of a system is what it does; so we attacked that, the tracking data.

    The techbro conceit of putting all the system code in one giant repository meant it was easy to suborn a minor contractor to leak the data storage code. A datacentre cleaner replaced a console cable with a logger, then another night dislodged a power cord. Technicians attended. Once the logger acquired some credentials, we injected our payload. Not into the running system, into the backup daemon. The vast archive of all the clicks, views and habits of half the planet slowly began to accumulate poison.

    After two backup cycles, we struck. A datacentre fire is is a survivable event for a competent organization. Restore the offsite backups to an alternative DC and keep on truckin’. Unless those backups were not the data you thought they were.

    So, long story short, if you were wondering why all your ads today are for dildos, because us. You’re welcome.

If you haven't received your Patreon payout this might be why. Upload your docs, call Payoneer customer services on +44-203-608-0610 https://payoneer.com/customer-disclosures-and-complaints/?_ga=2.65338285.2012463153.1704794931-1394640955.1704794931 and they can put a rush on your approval process if you need the money quickly.

    👉🏼Unemployment has now been under 4% for almost two years— the longest streak of rock-bottom jobless rates since the Vietnam War.”👈🏼 https://www.npr.org/2024/01/05/1222714145/jobs-report-december-labor-wages

    firecat,
    @firecat@mstdn.social avatar

    @GottaLaff and I’ll keep saying the same thing, numbers don’t matter. People are in a abuse economy. A stupid “rate” doesn’t matter to corporations raising the prices of food. People who do anything to get a job aren’t hired by employers, the numbers don’t get people to accept jobseekers.

    Stop looking at the numbers and see the problem of employers who refused employment opportunities.
