Not a fan of “BREAKING: Sam Alito…” alerts unless the second part is “…unexpectedly resigns.”

American trucks are so comically big and impractical that it’s now an instant red flag for me if a contractor arrives in one instead of in a smaller van (more fuel efficient, can lock your stuff instead, easier to park)

It’s not mentioned enough that the generationally high turnout in 2020 almost certainly helped Trump and that lower turnout in 2024 will hurt him; he’s consistently doing worse in likely voter screens vs registered voter lists https://maristpoll.marist.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Marist-Poll_USA-NOS-and-Tables_202404191520.pdf

It’s great that “sanction” can mean either “approve” or “disapprove” depending on the context

I have no idea how people, especially really boring people, get so many followers on Threads, organically. I have few problems on any other platform. Just that one. It’s very odd. If it wasn’t happening to so many others I know, I’d think it was just me. But it’s not.

eARCwelder,
@eARCwelder@mastodon.social avatar

@shoq It feels impossible to get traction there unless you were a huge Twitter profile and/or a celebrity. And even some bigtime Twitter personalities seem to have given up—I scrolled through some of my follows there yesterday to see if I could follow some of them here via the ActivityPub federation, only to see many hadn’t posted for weeks/months

Going through my old stuff in my dad’s attic and I found this. RE2 on #n64 I think it was the only RE on n64 and the only N64 game with loading screens.

@Leeisme Kind of impressive they made it work at all on the notoriously small cart. The likewise had very few loading screens; one that comes to mind is Mickey Mania

I’d wondered about why it’s so common for human body temperature readings now to be below 98.6 (I often can’t break 98 unless really sick)…and it’s because the numbers that were used to make the original 98.6 figure were from a time when people were constantly infected with TB and other illnesses that are now much better controlled and less common. Their bodies were inflamed as hell.

Reading this, I feel like we may look back someday at

A) China’s runaway success in solar and wind power and
B) Russia’s ability to manufacture many more weapons than expected because its arms companies are state-owned or directed and as such not beholden to shareholders

As a major pivot point away from neoliberalism (i.e., the “marketization” of everything)

Is there a general term for negative partisanship that applies beyond political parties? But not just the general term polarization. Like, people staking out more extreme or rigid positions on an issue because they're annoyed by what they perceive as the extreme or rigid positions on the other side?

eARCwelder,
@eARCwelder@mastodon.social avatar

@misc It’s too bad “accelerationist” already means something else…

But one term I propose “antiyimby.” I’ve thought about this in regard to YIMBYism, which annoys a lot of people because of its links to Big Tech, its overtures to the GOP and libertarians, and the personalities of some of its most outspoken proponents. (1/2)

eARCwelder,
@eARCwelder@mastodon.social avatar

People who otherwise don’t care about affordable housing (note: I don’t think a lot of YIMBYs really care about it either) then spin up an entire ideology that’s just whatever will rile self-styled YIMBYs, but it’s not NIMBYism per se.

People really lose their minds and then in turn YIMBYs themselves stake out positions like “left-NIMBYs are destroying civilization itself,” and that feeds another round of antiyimby polarization, etc. (2/2)

It’s neat that Prince of Persia was designed as an Apple II game and its best version (out of the 9000 ports of it) was for the #SNES which is basically a stripped down gaming-specific Apple IIGS. SNES was also the only console to get a version of Prince of Persia 2.

Paprika in 4K

The previous 1080p Blu-ray was so old that it was still encoded with MPEG-2 rather than AVC (the 4K disc naturally uses HEVC). The mini documentary on this edition says Sony had made it an early Blu-ray release (in 2007) to showcase the then-new format’s resolution and color capabilities

I have described bluesky as a "mastodon instance in denial" and I largely stand by that. If everyone on Bluesky mass migrated to a Mastodon instance there wouldn't be an issue, and I think we would all be better off. That would also be by default "opt out" for most instances here.

@misc It sucks that one of the only detailed rundowns of AT Protocol I can recall was from a known bad-faith actor a while back, so I don’t know how valid it is lol (can’t remember the name; Sam something I think?). I feel like whatever harms or benefits aren’t worth it considering how small the site is and how it has no business model. I’d bet money that Twitter itself will outlast Bluesky.
