For I offer an unusual species. The first photo shows a large and two smaller specimens growing among trees at Burden Museum & Gardens in . The second shows the pond habit where these were growing. Some palms are visible on the shore. These are rather large and thick examples of Palmettos. I took these pictures Sunday while hiking on the trail system there.

A south Louisiana pond habitat with emergent vegetation visible in the foreground. Several Palmetto Palms are visible on the far shore growing between tall bare cypresses.

The Spanish Moon Moth is not only absolutely astonishing, it is basically a relic from the ice age. The conditions in the small areas of the Pyrenees where it is found have remained stable, unchanged, for a few million years, allowing the small remnant populations of this moth to survive in these small habitats virtually unchanged. Small populations of the species can now be found in France and Switzerland, but those are consequences of more recent human actions. At the caterpillar stage, it is quite a picky eater and primarily feeds on the needles of only two species of pine trees.

Eriospermum paradoxum are confounding desert plants from South Africa. They have a singe leaf that grows out of the bottom of their potato-like tubers. They are often fuzzy and sometimes the single leaf is variegated and spiky so it looks like multiple leaves, but really it's just one leaf. Sometimes they have nothing above ground for years and no one knows why.

They have separate flower stems ... like orchids in that way. Deeply strange plants.

@futurebird @botanyone My strangest would be the unique coniferous plant from the Namib Desert: Welwitschia mirabilis. This is a โ€œliving fossilโ€ that has an underground trunk and only two strap-like leaves. I posted a picture of a female plant from Wikipedia. Hereโ€™s a link to more info:

Diary of an ASD Squirrel. Day 63 Sunday 31/12/23

TL:DR HAPPY NEW YEAR !
For once you can read the blinking thing ๐Ÿ˜†

So time has caught up with us folks, as we enter the last hours of New Years Eve this is the last diary entry for 2023.

It would, perhaps, be nice to report that I have had some major insight or revelation a the end of the first year of my โ€˜autistic awakeningโ€™ , but perhaps that is the biggest of them all - the realisation that I am ,in fact, autistic.

In my mind I can tick each of the Triad of Impairments - Social Communication, Social Intelligence & Social Imagination.
For sure I am high functioning , but too many things point to ASD for it to be in doubt, for me at any rate.

I hope that the ASD Assessment agrees with this once complete, Iโ€™m not sure at this point what I will do if it doesnโ€™t - a problem to deal with if that is what transpires.

Today has been relaxing & fun , with a little gaming & sharing the day with friends on Mastodon!

I had a good chat with my dear friend CDP ๐Ÿงšโ€โ™€๏ธ this morning, always an enjoyable experience ๐Ÿ˜Š

Final Thoughts:

2023 has been a year that has left me with indelible scars but also new & lasting friendships .

It started with me โ€˜knowing โ€˜. I was just chronically depressed, & has ended with me โ€˜knowingโ€™ Iโ€™m #ActuallyAutistic !

I have made progress in a couple of areas towards the end of this year - I can now , under very particular circumstances play multiplayer co-op games, & I am no longer a total hermit - going out on my own is now something that is merely very difficult , rather than nearly impossible !

Many people have helped me achieve this, a small group of really close friends have supported me & kept my head above water & I owe them all a debt of gratitude that will be hard to repay!
One stands out however, her determination inspires me, her sense of humour is infectious & her gentle honesty, kindness & understanding has actively helped me to break thru barriers I never thought I could.

    However, if the Republican wins, it will be due to lower voter turnout. Same thing happened in Louisiana, blue voters donโ€™t go to the polls religiously like red voters do. Then they pay the price for failure to vote.

Everyone travels into the future in shifts, with periods of cold-sleep between activity periods. No fancy time bending needed.

    Sometimes I come up with new articles to write for my blog, but then I doubt if people will be interested, and end up not writing about it.

    But of course I'm only right about half of the time. The truth is, I never know what's going to connect with people and what isn't.
