@deviantollam have you seen https://pcpoodle.com/collections/home/products/volty-switch-keychain-multimeter-leatherman-compatible ?

it's a keychain multimeter (from the people that made the voltmeter one) that fits in any 1/4" bit holder, especially the flat Leatherman one.

among other things it seems usefully innocuous

(note you want "volty switch", volty bit is the voltmeter)

For as much as I'm in Vegas, you'd think I'm one of the ones folk turn to with a worm like this, as opposed to me reaching out to all of you fine folk who attend Summer Camp there with me each year...

What are some favorite non-baudy, non-party experiences in Sin City? (Family will be in town with me next month and I'm building a list of things to check out with them which aren't like the kinds of usual stuff most of my people get up to every year during DEFCON / Black Hat / BSides.)

Best small museums, under-appreciated shows, etc. Avoiding the worst tourist traps but still showing them very unique and enjoyable things is my goal.

deviantollam,

@jwgoerlich @JetSm00th Oh I recognize this place! There was some crazy over the top SHOT show sponsored event there last year.

My team solved some amazing complicated crypto puzzle and won firearm, in fact.

Artist Commission Available, if anyone cares to spread the word...

Many years ago, my original team was featured on the project known as HackerStrip, where someone rendered art in an action-comics style manner and described famous hacking projects and jobs in the field...

https://thecoregroup.net/hackerstrip/

The art was very cool! But, sadly, the project's creators went dark long ago. Emails and other contacts go unanswered.

The current job offer: we took headshots from the original strip and printed them. They hang in our office. But we have new team members and I'd love to commission someone who can make similar headshot artwork in a matching style that features some of my new folk. 🧑‍🎨

If you're up for this, feel free to reply or contact me via any other means that you know. 😊👍

Comic-style drawing of one of my team members, a shaven-headed guy with a beard and glasses, in a polo shirt holding up what is later revealed to be a fake ID credential
Comic style drawing of one of my team members, an african-american man in a tactical sweater seen crawling through a ceiling to uninstall a device that was attached to alarm system wiring
Comic style drawing of me holding up a large ring of keys

Score of the day: WarGames 2000 movie script from 1998! The unproduced sequel to the movie that brought hacking to the masses. David Lightman is all grown up now 😲

This is completely different than the shouldn't-even-count-as-a-sequel WarGames: The Dead Code from 2008.

Complete script of the unreleased sequel to WarGames entitled WarGames 2000 and dated April 24, 1998. Edge view.

Do you need cheering up? The Monterey Bay Aquarium has got you covered. Text OTTERTUM to (844) 786-2927 to subscribe to sea otter cuteness. 🦦

deviantollam,

@wendynather fun fact: my friends can do this with my own phone number, as well.

caveat: I am not an aquarium and I have very limited photos of otters. 🦦 (but my otter resources are non-zero, as evinced by this attachment) ☺️

On Hold, listening to tinny music.

Robot Operator: We apologize for your wait, but we refuse to pay our Operators a fair wage, so never enough people are working here. Instead of accepting the blame, and fixing this, we tell the few people who work for us, they are simply not trying hard enough. Your wait will be 30 minutes to talk to an Operator who is about to cry, because everyone has yelled at them for having to wait so long. REMEMBER YOUR CALL IS VERY IMPORTANT TO US, but not in any demonstrable way.

deviantollam,

@RickiTarr this reminds me of a recent post wherein someone very properly pointed out "you can't *ALWAYS" be having 'higher than average' call volume... that's not how averages work."

I'm trying to understand #bike parking laws in #Netherland. We have a bakfiets. It's been really hard to park. Someone recommended parking in a car parking spot. Someone in a car told us to move so they could park. Is it legal for bikes to park in car spots or could our bike be impounded by the city if we don't comply?

Re: my earlier toot.

Honest question - is a "utility room" some sort of Midwestern thing?

Talking about how to avoid running ducts through attics, it occurred to me that it might be.

Here, if you don't have a basement, there's usually a room with your furnace/air handler, water heater, and washer/dryer. Plumbing often routes there, too.

Sometimes it's less of a room and more of a closet, but we can't just stick the washer and water heater in the garage 'cause they'll freeze.

deviantollam,

@TechConnectify I'm from the mid Atlantic and we all had what were mostly called laundry rooms, often with a closet inside said room with the water heater. Otherwise the water heater and HVAC were in the basement

Penn Jillette has remarked that one of the best ways to truly appreciate the USA is to partake in international travel. I definitely concur.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love being other places, seeing new sights, experiencing other cultures, and eating other foods.

But — and you can try to fight me on this even though you'll lose — the most dogshit Best Western hotel in bumfuck Ohio will still top whatever Europeans offer up as luxury lodging.

Things that every piece of shit US hotel can manage to figure out:

  1. Air Conditioning
  2. Passably working WiFi
  3. Making the room fucking dark

All of these are like some mystery, utterly unknown to even expensive European properties.

deviantollam,

@JiSe eh, I think I'm just feeling a bit frayed at the fringes from this week in Paris.

deviantollam,

@geowurster oh my fucking god, those like half-wall glass bullshit installs.

Total clown show

deviantollam,

Look, I know it's kind of cringe to complain about something that other people wish they could have (e.g. foreign travel) but damn if I'm not laying here, still wide awake, tossing and turning because it's shitty and sticky and hot... and the real kick in the balls is that it's a perfect 64° outside

How in the hell can the A/C be turned up to full blast in this slice of hell room and not even manage to come close to the temp it is naturally outside?? (No, the windows don't open. And even if they did, this nation hasn't discovered screens.)

I'm orgnizing a regional tech conference. I contacted a big-shot entrepreneur, and he is considering doing a keynote for us!

I realize I need to have decent security protocols in place, even with volunteer staff. I once saw a recording of a presentation about de-escalation techniques for event security. I think it was by @deviantollam , and I'm pretty sure it was at DEFCON.

Does anyone havea link to that? It'll be good training material.

I believe I've seen people use generative AI to create art from a prompt. I think I've seen it on Twatter, are there accounts here on Mastodon to do it?

For an upcoming little thing, I'd like to generate a statue of liberty face but looking chagrined or surprised or something like that.

Anyone know of an account or a site or anything which can do this easily? (I think I've seen @adamshostack use an engine like this?)

Hey, all. I basically never boost or share Go Fund Me things.

The reason I am about to is because this is — for lack of a better term — my daughter. After losing her birth family because of pretty awful bigotry and things I won't repeat here, she has made her way in the world through inner strength, the love of her wife, and the support of chosen family.

Today, that support comes in the form of my sharing this URL, because she has to make an emergency trip back to Thailand for post-surgery medical treatment.

The medical care is all covered by the Suporn clinic. The travel is not.

https://gofund.me/b81018dc

Feel free to read for more info, ask me any questions you may have, and remember that sharing the link is also a form of support. (And in this case my personal vouch for the fact that this is all legit is what I am offering here.)
