Users of ndjson/json-lines: if you encounter malformed json in the stream, do you give up entirely, or ignore that chunk and move on?

@demiurg@fosstodon.org avatar

@pamelafox I am not using it but in general I would raise an error and log it.

    @GossiTheDog I think the majority of (western) people have no idea how finacially poor very large parts of humanity are.

    Somebody should make an OS-agnostic program that searches the hard drive and returns a count of how many versions of Python you have installed

    #libcurl has proudly served as the HTTP(S) engine in #git for nineteen years now.

    @bagder So I can blame you now for every single commit any developer has ever made? 😜

    @demiurg@fosstodon.org avatar

    @ondrejkolin @bagder you mean like git push origin main to a remote? Like with Github or GitLab or Gitea or Bitbucket or Codeberg ;)

    Lasse Collin has started making some commits to #xz, interesting starting point here.

    @jamescooke @joeyh Thank you...I didn't see it the umpteenth time I read it and was about to lose my mind over people talking about dots.

    ... and I'm back! An unfortunate sequence of events (involving ancient account details) lead to me failing to renew my personal domain, so it broke DNS... which broke my self-hosted Mastodon as well

    So Mypy didn’t save us from this test error 😔. But it seems that calling quantize() with a bool exp isn’t "wrong" in #Python stdlib - I wish it was though.

    @jamescooke Oh it seems there was quite some discussion about this ^^

    My bookkeeping for 2023 was much simpler than usual due to the fact that for half of the year I was pretty much a jobless loser 🙃

    @mariatta Being jobless doesn't make you a loser, imho. You are not what you do for work. 🤗

    I respect Schneier’s way of calmly punching straight for the throat:

    “The only way Microsoft or OpenAI would know this would be to spy on chatbot sessions.”

    @inthehands He writes he didn't read the terms of use. It's clearly stated there.

    🙋 Does anyone have good resources around onboarding new maintainers to an existing open source project?

    Ways to communicate existing practices & preferences, growing their confidence in reviewing PRs, "unknown unknowns" - anything is helpful please!

    Context: doing this soon 🥰

    @JoshuaKGoldberg I think Uncurled by

    I'm on call for another 10 hours at my day job, and so far I've been working most of the weekend. The really frustrating part is none of the issues we've experienced this weekend have been with my systems, but with systems that I interact with. We have a TON of monitoring on our tools, and it appears that our monitoring is far in excess of the monitoring done by other departments. I shouldn't be the one telling other groups their stuff is down.

    demiurg,
    @demiurg@fosstodon.org avatar

    @mike Happens to us also on a regular basis. Perhaps you could teach them to monitor properly... 🤔
    Btw I love our Grafana dashboards. ^^

    “AI and Lossy Bottlenecks - Schneier on Security”

    Two points:

    1. A lot of previously sensible people are being swept up by the AI bubble.

    2. The ideas in this post are literally a mechanism for taking away your right to vote and replace it with a software-mediated plutocracy. https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2023/12/ai-and-lossy-bottlenecks.html

    demiurg,
    @demiurg@fosstodon.org avatar

    @baldur Despite of being a dystopian outlook the article just labels any possible data processing with 'AI'.

    I guess I am a bit weird. But when you get solar electricity effectively for free, can use it yourself at home, maybe even store it in batteries — didn't you already get enough? Why all this fuss about selling the excess electricity? Just give it away to your neighbours, for free. Whatever gets used locally, reduces the problems on the grid, which is often used an excuse by Big Electricity to refuse to buy solar electricity. 1/n

    demiurg,
    @demiurg@fosstodon.org avatar

    @jwildeboer there is the grid in between at least if I don't also want to build the infrastructure for my neighbour. I like the idea absolutely but I am afraid that the net companies will not participate in this shareconomy.
