Great networking meeting today at Topping & Company Booksellers in Edinburgh, talking about translating books and selling books. Bought this one at the recommendation of one of the booksellers: Bad Cree by Jessica Johns.
This picture was commissioned by the Translators’ Section of the Swedish Writers’ Union. The creator has received fair remuneration and has chosen to remain anonymous. They have given their permission to the Union for unlimited dissemination and downloading of the picture.
So please, post it on Social Media, send to writers, journalists, teachers, publishers, etc.!
Unfortunately, most people won't even notice these issues when they read an automatically translated text, because it "sounds good"... That's why it takes a professional translator who actually understands the source text to see what has gone wrong.
Eindelijk het boek De spijker van Zhang Yueran gelezen. Prachtig verhaal, mooi geschreven (en dus ook mooi vertaald door Annelous Stiggelbout, @astigg1).
Dit moest ik even kwijt (en NRC plaatste het zowaar)... 😉
(Letter I sent to the newspaper because they didn't even bother to name the translator in an interview with the Dutch nominee for the International Booker Prize, a prize for writers AND their translators.)
