this drawing reminds me: read Translation as Transhumance (2017) by Mireille Gansel, trans. Ros Schwartz

Gansel recalls her life as a translator as one of smuggling words, ideas, lives, across walls erected by anti-human forces. Rescuing language from history, rescuing poetry from barbed wire & bombs that target not only humans but the very idea of their humanity

@bennett @bookstodon Yes, I've read that one. Thanks for the reminder!

#DuckDuckGo doesn't seem to be working for me this morning ... Gives "Sorry, we ran into an error displaying these results".

Can't help thinking it has something to do with them too getting into AI shenanigans ... 😬🤦‍♂️

Please just give me "the web" 🙏

@AdamBishop Same here. I was wondering whether it was because I had switched off all the AI options... 🤔

Kudos to this agency for (finally!) being honest about why #AI can't replace professional #translation:

  1. Mistranslation
  2. Invention of content
  3. Overuse of trending terms
  4. Challenges with proper nouns
  5. Misalignment of register
  6. Exaggeration of style
  7. Misinterpretation of contextual and cultural nuances
  8. Inability to improve clarity
  9. Literal translations
  10. Misinterpretation of mood
  11. Introduction of nonexistent content
  12. Omission of content

Unfortunately, most people won't even notice these issues when they read an automatically translated text, because it "sounds good"... That's why it takes a professional translator who actually understands the source text to see what has gone wrong.

Ik lees nu ‘Grijze bijen’, over een man die in de grijze zone tussen Rusland en Oekraïne is achtergebleven. In de lente vertrekt hij met zijn bijen naar de Krim. Goed verteld!

@AdamBishop I'm not so sure writers and translators will soon be replaced by AI, unless of course we don't mind having to wade through thick layers of online slime...

creative_xl8,
@creative_xl8@mastodon.social avatar

@AdamBishop I have already had instructions from clients to "ignore the current content on our website, it's not very good". Not sure whether that content was produced by MT/AI or a bad translator, but it showed they (still) demand quality.

creative_xl8,
@creative_xl8@mastodon.social avatar

@AdamBishop People who are fine with junk probably never would have hired a writer/translator anyway.

creative_xl8,
@creative_xl8@mastodon.social avatar

@OliverCzulo @AdamBishop That division already started with MT, before the AI hype. Maybe some people thought AI would be better, but I think they are discovering it's not as intelligent as it claims to be.

Wie heeft er wel eens van de schrijver Robert Galbraight gehoord. Ken deze schrijver niet, nog zijn werk. @boeken

creative_xl8,
@creative_xl8@mastodon.social avatar

@SAS1954 @boeken Robert Galbraith is een pseudoniem van JK Rowling. Onder deze naam heeft ze inmiddels 7 detectives geschreven. Ik vind ze persoonlijk erg goed.

creative_xl8,
@creative_xl8@mastodon.social avatar

@SAS1954 @boeken Gewoon een keertje proberen. 😉 Het eerste deel is The Cuckoo's Calling (in het Nederlands vertaald als Koekoeksjong, door Sabine Mutsaers). De verhalen staan op zich, maar het achtergrondverhaal over detective Cormoran Strike is beter te volgen als je ze in volgorde leest.

Received a proposal for a long-term #translation project that sounded legit. Looked up the company on Payment Practices: several reports of people who were never paid for their work, so basically a scammer.

Always do your background checks!

creative_xl8,
@creative_xl8@mastodon.social avatar

For those who don't know Payment Practices: it's an online database with information about companies offering translation services. For an annual fee of €28 you can access the database and add your own experience with agencies. Well worth it to avoid scams that could cost you hundreds of euros...

Eugen Rochko recently posted a thought:
"I think it comes down to, AI has no place in the arts. Machine-generated art has the appearance of what it is emulating, but no substance. Like cake made entirely of fondant. Or cardboard."

'Aiono' replied: "Also even if it could, like why would you automate one of the most entertaining part of being a human?"

Replace 'art' with 'writing'.

Right!

Happy writing,
Roger

@RogerRemacle @bookstodon

And replace 'writing' with 'translation'. Because contrary to what a lot of people think translation isn't just a matter of replacing words or phrases. It takes creativity to produce a translation that reflects the style and images of the original, especially with creative texts, such as books (both fiction and non-fiction).

@jake2 @RogerRemacle @bookstodon Absolutely. Also, translators spot mistakes in the source text and correct them, and where necessary/appropriate adapt the translation to the target audience. No machine can do that.
