Thirty minutes into my coding work being blocked on picking over documentation trying to figure out how to use my package manager, I realize I have a second problem because the installed version of my package manager is too old for a feature I need. Now I must (a) determine which package manager I used to install the package manager [Debian? The other, older Python package manager I used to install the newer Python package manager?] (b) figure how to use that other package manager

conniptions,
@conniptions@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc Clearly what is needed is some kind of package manager manager that will allow you to manage installation of and switching between arbitrary sets of package managers as required.

Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.

Because learning to play violin is apparently not driving me crazy enough, I am also slowly working through the series of excellent blog posts on intonation and tuning systems by @johncarlosbaez - I think this one is a good place to start: https://johncarlosbaez.wordpress.com/2023/10/13/perfect-fifths-in-equal-tempered-scales/

conniptions,
@conniptions@mastodon.social avatar

Update: currently trying to write a little web toy that will help illustrate the difference between tuning systems by playing them. Slight flaw in my clever plan: I have a terrible ear. I won't be able to tell if my code works or not.

conniptions,
@conniptions@mastodon.social avatar

Update 2: Ok, I have implemented the world's shittest synth, using some Build Your Own Web Piano In HTML And CSS I found, and a basic sine wave sound tuned using equal temperament.

It is now 2:30am, to which, boo and double boo.

Tomorrow (for certain values of 'tomorrow') I will look at implementing some of the different temperament schemes from the John Baez blog series and see if I can hear any difference.

conniptions,
@conniptions@mastodon.social avatar

Right so, I've got a little webtoy now that lets you toggle between what I /think/ are correctly calculated Equal and Pythagorean temperaments:

https://www.conniptions.org/temperamental/

Code, very rough, is here fwiw:

https://github.com/wgmyers/temperamental

Can you hear the difference? Damned if I can just yet.

Not very mobile friendly yet, sorry.

Also argh it's nearly 3am

Anyway, never mind me, here's a video of Parmela Attariwala on viola and Mei Han on zheng producing 8 minutes and 40 seconds of utterly sublime shivers-up-your-spine-inducing improvisation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T-_be8g8iQ

Parents asked if I wanted my old violin - checked that it still worked, it's in decent shape but I couldn't get it tuned up, the pegs are slipping too much. Checked what this model would sell for new these days, it's a typical student violin. And, like, hmm, uh, I guess guitar is a cheap hobby.

conniptions,
@conniptions@mastodon.social avatar

@gzt Alternatively, there's always this: https://frettedfiddle.com/

As a very newly minted fiddle-botherer, I believe there exists a peg product that can be applied to stop them slipping, but that's all I know about it for now.

The Tautological Algorithm is the only currently known O(0) algorithm, and is an algorithm for creating a universe. The algorithm works on the principle that in order to be invoked, there must already exist a universe for it to be invoked in, and it supplies this pre-existing universe as output.

conniptions,
@conniptions@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc This is great. I believe I, or rather Emma, unknowingly used a variant of this algorithm in Emma Goldcoin: https://github.com/wgmyers/egx

It also shocked me to know that English speakers in America call people who speak other languages ‘monolingual’ (because their English isn’t as good as it ‘should’ be) when in fact I thought English-speaking Americans are the real monolinguals

conniptions,
@conniptions@mastodon.social avatar

@skinnylatte Somehow it doesn't seem hugely shocking to learn that some Anglophone Americans do not in fact know what 'monolingual' means :)

@skinnylatte Ouch.

What the hell is going on with this potato? It's been in the oven nearly an hour and a half now and it's still not cooked.

conniptions,
@conniptions@mastodon.social avatar

@pre @jimgon Sorry to be the bearer of annoying news but it sounds like your oven may be on the blink and not getting up to the temperature it claims.

conniptions,
@conniptions@mastodon.social avatar

@pre If you're asking then yes. May be beyond cleaning though 😕

conniptions,
@conniptions@mastodon.social avatar

@wiredog @jimgon @pre Ooo. Looks like a useful bit of kit. We had to get fridge / freezer thermometers when that went on the blink and started lying about temperature and I've been wondering if there's a similar thing for mendacious ovens. Looks like there is. £12.90 over here though. Do you have one yourself?

conniptions,
@conniptions@mastodon.social avatar

@wiredog @jimgon @pre Of course, the problem with thermometers is that without a known-good accurate thermometer to test against, you have no way of knowing if you have simply added a new set of lies about the temperature. That one has... not good reviews. Mulling over this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Salter-Thermometer-Temperature-Measurement-Adjustable/dp/B01685ZUS2/

In other news, there was a casting call posted today to a London-based musicians FB group seeking someone to play the role of a 50 year old man who - I am paraphrasing - abandoned his youthful dreams of being a musician in order to earn a living busking on the street with his instrument.

I have been arguing with the poster over whether or not their fictional character is a musician. They are adamant that he isn't.

I am doing a thing involving taking many deep breaths repeatedly.

A problem with tech regulation by moral panic is that it tends to lead towards contradictory regulation with massive unintended consequences. Nowhere is this as evident as with the current generation of laws intended to “protect kids”.

In the US it’s state laws forcing websites to collect your government ID to restrict access to to people under 21. In Europe, it’s banning encryption to prevent people sharing CSAM. In both cases, these have real anti-democratic impacts.

conniptions,
@conniptions@mastodon.social avatar

@carnage4life Surely the anti-democratic impacts are the point, though.

How can we support a pathway to peace if any speech in support of Palestinians is demonized as pro-terror? I've signed this letter, with gratitude to its drafters & organizers.

@emilymbender Co-signed.

There is no excuse for equating support for Palestinians with support for the Hamas atrocities. None. Zero. It's just not a thing. And extremely worrying that anyone would take such a step.

Found out from someone today that texting someone back immediately lowers you in the social hierarchy, even with platonic relationships. Which took me by surprise since I have treated texting with the urgency of AOL Instant Messenger since I was a child.

conniptions,
@conniptions@mastodon.social avatar

@ryanhoulihan Seems to me 'someone' may have conflated the idea that replying to certain texts in certain contexts too quickly "may* send an unintended side- message with the idea that it's ok to be a massively unresponsive cockwomble to people in general and serendipitously hit upon a way of looking at it that Proves Them Right. Boo to that, I say.
