If IBM decides to merge Terraform and Ansible, would that be Terrible?

compuguy,
@compuguy@istoleyour.pw avatar

@geerlingguy To be fair Hasicorp has already done enough to tarnish themselves. I'm sure IBM can 1+ that easily!

Oof, forgot not everyone knows how to use a CLI nowadays, explaining how to use the Microsoft Command Line to someone used to dragging stuff around with a mouse.

compuguy,
@compuguy@istoleyour.pw avatar

@ai6yr Honestly Powershell has a bit more of a learning curve, but is more powerful than the old school MS-DOS command line. Then again I can just use WSL and use Linux CLI instead......

It sure is a good thing people chased away CISA last year. I mean, look at the propaganda they post. I’m super glad we made people stay on the other site to access this filth.

Yes, I’m having a moment of bitterness

compuguy,
@compuguy@istoleyour.pw avatar

@jerry @cloudedjudge @jcrabapple @zate From what I've seen there's no real momentum towards this. Most US government agencies still have a presence on Xitter. Many are still blocking Fediverse instances on their respective networks. Honestly I can only see two agencies having a justification for a Mastodon/Fediverse instance: GSA's 18f (https://18f.gsa.gov/), CISA, and maybe DISA? I don't know 🤷‍♂️

contempating noforn.infosec.exchange for the vehemently opposed 🤔 Then again, I think they all left already.

compuguy,
@compuguy@istoleyour.pw avatar

@jbaggs @jerry Who does a paper SF86 anymore...we got E-QIP! Hasn't been breached since 2015 to boot....

jerry, to random

ok - I made some significant (hopefully) improvements to infosec.exchange....

I had been noticing that periodically the instance, while normally fast, would get a bit slugglish for a moment. That's disappointing because the application is running on a 64 core latest gen Intel Gold server and the database on a 48 core latest gen AMD Epyc.

I noticed that sidekiq continues to grow in load, and the redis database is getting hammered. So, I provisioned a new 24 core latest gen Intel server and moved sidekiq to it, spun up a redis server just for sidekiq, and to help offset the costs, I moved crank/tor and elasticsearch to that server as well. It appears that the main redis server now has dropped from being continuously consuming 100% of multiple CPUs to barely 3 or 4%, while redis on the new server for sidekiq is consuming about 8 CPUs on the new system.

We'll see how we do during the upcoming monsterdon test...

Also, as I noted above, Crank and Tor got moved - if you see any issues with either, please let me know.

@jerry @geekgrrl @paco Wow, they've limited a number of major servers...and they have a really, really long block list...wow....

@geekgrrl @paco I see that....though I will say a portion of their list are probably legitimately awful instances...

spika, to actuallyautistic

I had hoped to go out to a show tonight, but nope... Taking a drive at dusk to pick something up at the store for my mom used up all of the mental energy I had, and by the time I got home, I was in full blown headache mode.

One of the things I hate about winter is how early it gets dark. Being out at dusk is SO much more overstimulating in the winter because other people are still out and about when it gets dark at 4, so you get a face full of headlights when you're driving around.... and the mixture of astigmatism making lights looking streaky and autism's overstimulation.... I just can't.

So, once again I've cancelled my plans to stay home in the dark because it's too much to take a drive and go out tonight, and I am so frustrated about it and my lack of planning to make it work.

@compuguy@istoleyour.pw avatar

@masukomi @Susan60 @spika @crashglasshouses @actuallyautistic Yeah, add that lots of newer cars have overly bright headlights and/or poorly aimed/designed ones that blind you like high beams...I can relate. Though I do also have a astigmatism.....I'm sure that doesn't help.

I opened work slack and thought I had either been fired or had a stroke and wasn’t seeing right. But no, they just changed it without any fanfare.

compuguy,
@compuguy@istoleyour.pw avatar

@0xSim @jerry Yes, though most of the "new teams" changes are supposedly in the code, including reduced memory usage...

jerry, to random

Not a bad day. I managed to get the new Epyc server built and sorted out how to run containers without root, then got mobilizon (https://meetups.infosec.exchange) up and running in a container on the new server. I am 98% complete with moving video.infosec.exchange there - peertube’s config files are dramatically different between a bare metal install (what the current site uses) and a containerized version - it’s been tedious to sort everything out, but I think I’m close.

Next will be moving pixel, elk, matrix, infosec.pub, and infosec.place to it. Matrix will be next as it’s running low on disk space.

Some contractors will benefit. Like Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, or Even Northrop Grumman. Plenty of much lower profile contracts for various backend IT systems that will probably not benefit from this....

I may be looking at managing my own #Mastodon infrastructure next year. I am looking at AWS as I would like to see about making it an ECS if at all possible to scale and shrink based on demand. I’m curious about any documentation and guides towards that end as well as migration between servers.

More than a dozen Sinclair TV stations in the US ran a sponsored #gold investment segment featuring far-right podcaster Stew Peters. He is an antisemitic conspiracy theorist who has called for the execution of journalists and politicians. https://www.thedailybeast.com/sinclair-airs-sponsored-segments-featuring-antisemitic-conspiracist-stew-peters

@w7voa It's amazing how far WJLA has fallen since they were bought by Sinclair. Not sure why Brian van de Graff thought that was a good idea to do that sponsored segment.....
