Saw Mad Max: Fury Road this morning.

The direction and scenery is very impressive, and it's cool that so much backstory and context is conveyed with just glimpses and indirect references ... but the main story can be told in five minutes. And it is, at the 1:19:00 mark. The rest is 115 minutes of drive drive drive explosions with some of that world-building weaved in.

As I get older, as young people look younger and younger, as older and older people look "normal age", I'm increasingly amazed that there are still so many people that look old to me.

Like, people, if you look old to me now, halfway as I am through life, how crazy old are you?!

The translator of Cixin's novel, the Swedish Wikipedia and the Swedish Academy Word List all agree:

The Swedish term for the three-body problem is "trekropparsproblemet". That translates back to "the three-bodies problem", with an unnecessary plural suffix in the middle adding a syllable to a word that already has quite a few.

Which technical writer 200 years ago is responsible for this abomination? This is not how we compose words.

"Trekroppsproblemet", with a nice sequence of word stems, is the superior term, but officially it's not recommended, it's not even in the Word List as a variant.

The more comprehensive Swedish Academy Dictionary does list "-kropps-" as a variant, but doesn't source it, it only sources occurrences of "-kroppars-", going all the way back to 1797, L. Regnér, "[Introduction to the Natural Sciences, 1–2]"

Doing "Add A Finger" to the fingerprint recognition, but it's the same finger every time.

That's a tip, btw. Sweaty, just washed, after working for four hours, any time it fails to recognize your finger, pretend they're different fingers and add them.

@truls46 "Foreign language" would be unclear and potentially misleading.

"How many languages" is clear. If you speak only English you speak 1. If you speak Spanish and English you speak 2. No matter where in the world you are.

@hypolite I don't agree with everything and find a few things reactionary and uninformed, but I do agree with several things, possibly because I'm interpreting them through my own biases ... maybe he's more reactionary than I take him for:

  1. Many parents are overprotective and don't allow their kids to make mistakes.

I have allowed my kid to take physical risk, and to brush it off if there's been no serious harm. At the same time I've been clear what risks are not acceptable, and why, and been compassionate and present when he has been hurt due to his own actions or those of others.

  1. We should be very careful and deliberate about how we allow kids to use social media.

My kid has had internet devices early on, but we have recurring discussions about what he's watching, we watch many things together, and I've been careful with how much of his own words and voice he has been allowed to expose, and explained why, and he has gradually negotiated getting more of himself out there in a safe enough way.

  1. No phones during the school day.

Yes, why, just why. Kid's school just doesn't allow it. There's enough time to play at home.

  1. Online friends cannot replace face to face interactions.

Haidt and I probably mean this to very different degrees, but this is why I want to travel and meet more fedi people. And I'm glad that kid hangs with both entirely-internet friends but also classmates and former classmates when he's online, and we parents arrange for them to meet and do things in person outside school.
