Watched a video of Gigantiops destructor (the ant with the best eyesight of ants) A lone ant hunting makes a point of sneaking up on the prey from behind, circling them to stay clear of their antennae and out of range of their eyes.

Can that be done without a "theory of the mind of the other" ?

"It can see me here, it can't see me there?"

Were this a mammal I bet people would call this evidence sufficient. Since ants are so tiny, & have such tiny brains we look for other explanations.

It’s fed lots and lots of language devoid of the experiential context with which humans understand language, and then forms algorithms regarding what order those words tend to be placed in. For someone outside the ‘room’ it seems to be a great communicator, but in reality it’s just mechanically arranging letters.

things i learned by watching ants:

  • both free-thinkers/individualists/leaders and the opposite (followers) are necessary for a functioning group
  • the more backup plans (exits/entries into the tunnels) you have, the less likely it is that you’ll end up trapped or with no options.
  • sheer luck in numbers can be very useful. if the group does lots of different things at once, odds are higher that one of them will find something the group wants or needs.
  • not every member of a group needs to be self-sufficient. the more members of a group there are, the truer this is.
  • Just trying lots of things is one of the surest methods of success.
  • Simply because most or all of the group is doing one thing doesn’t mean it’s the right thing. Since groups have decision-making inertia, it’s possible that they fell into doing that thing either through sheer chance, or because of a fact that was true once but no longer is.

Today, while giving myself my weekly 2 mL testosterone shot, I accidentally gave it into a blood vessel rather than the muscle, and I couldn’t find any information online as to what I should do in this situation.
I ended up loosing a day getting sent to urgent care because the nurses didn’t know whether the situation was serious or not, either, especially given my symptoms (the most noticeable being how lightheaded I felt).
What I learned from the doctor was that I had no reason to be concerned, although it was a waste of a shot, since it was going to go right through my system without having a chance to affect me over time. The temporary physical discomfort and mental discombobulation was unpleasant, but as she assured me, not of any danger to my health. It’s been about 7 hours, and I’m relieved to say that I’m feeling much better now. So I’m sharing that information with you all now, to hopefully spare at least one person the same stress this situation caused me, since Google was so completely unhelpful.

has anyone else noticed a trend in media where a nonbinary character is introduced solely for a lead character to get their pronouns wrong, get corrected, and then feel bad about it? Often to cement how the lead feels out of place in that environment, or feels like they’re failing at everything? And then the nonbinary character immediately fades into irrelevance?
I’ve seen this a lot of times and it never fails to make me uncomfortable.
