I don't do Archive of our Own (AO3) myself, but I have MANY friends who do. It's a nonprofit website, people post their work free, it's a nice community thing.

In 2021 someone built an app (Archive Reader) to made reading etc easier on phones. It seemed reasonable. Unofficial, not sanctioned by or connected to AO3, but nice.

Around the 18th or 19th of this month (December 2023) users got a notice in the app saying that they were now on a premium subscription that was $1/mo, had already started, and without paying they are limited to an hour a day of AO3. There was apparently no advance warning, no changelog mentions, NOTHING.

The developer is now charging a subscription to read content they do not own, from an organization they are not affiliated with, through their unofficial app. There was no notification to AO3, not to the users, not to the writers posting on AO3.

If you know the app dev (yes, you have to look it up yourself -- search the app name in your app store, the icon is red on black) consider giving them a lesson in not stealing from people (either via nonconsensual subscriptions OR profiting from others' intellectual property), especially at the holidays, and yeeting them.

A couple of days ago two kids in my area, a 10yo and a 5yo, were in the crosswalk going to school when someone made a left turn into them. The dad with them was mostly undamaged, but the kids died at the hospital.

I feel helpless; I can't do anything to fix it or make it better. No one can. "Thoughts and prayers" don't fix a 5yo who will grow up in a strange country without their twin, or a dad who will wonder forever why it couldn't have been him instead of the kids with him. Why it happened at all.

And MSFT is okay with all that.

Certainly highlights the culture in the field and explains some things about the biases displayed in the thing.

The allegations about wills/inheritance should be independently verifiable, just follow the money from where it was supposed to go, where it actually did go, and when.

REMINDER: ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion, and other large trained neural models are NOT "artificial intelligence", they're just stochastic parrots, remixing and regurgitating what they've been fed. There's no theory-of-mind involved, so no understanding: there's no "there" there. (A real live parrot exhibits more intelligence than this.)

Don't call it AI; call it parrot-tech. That way you'll have a better perspective on what it can (and can't) do.

@cstross I call it a glorified ELIZA program infested with bloatware and use it -- on the rare occasions I do -- solely as a bullshit generator when I need to deal with things that require bullshit (ie resume generation seeds, speaking to salesdroids in their language, etc.)

At this point that might actually be an insult to the original ELIZA.
