The topic of first concerts we saw came up today and I was floored to realize that today is the thirtieth anniversary of my seeing Pink Floyd in concert at the Big O (Olympic stadium) in Montreal.

What a band to see live. And really set expectations way too high for other concerts.

What was your first concert?

bryanruby,
@bryanruby@me.dm avatar

@sebastianhahn @WTL My very first concert was REO Speedwagon with The Fabulous Thunderbirds as the opening band in Kansas City. It was around 1986.

As a musician, I beg of you - PLEASE do not use Spotify. The ONLY people that make money on Spotify is Spotify. Support artists, not capitalists.

@cyacyacya_nide @Oroshimarru @JustChapman @dustcircle Piracy is stealing, plain and simple. At least if you're streaming through a legitimate service they're getting something. My preference is to purchase directly from the artist whether via digital download or CD.

I really dislike social media during presidential election years. We're not even half way through 2024 and it's already gotten so weird and exhausting.

@noellemitchell I'm always fascinated when one of my own websites or a particular page gets sudden traffic. It always makes me feel good to know people are visiting...but after 25 years of doing this, I still couldn't tell you why one particular content is more popular than the other.

God help me but I'm playing DNS games again. My dad's ISP intercepts requests and it's pretty damn creepy.

bryanruby,
@bryanruby@me.dm avatar

@chris The ISP's DNS is intercepting requests or the ISP isn't allowing you to utilize a non-ISP provides DNS? Either way is frustrating...but always grateful when one DNS provider is down I can use another DNS provider's servers.

@chris It's one of the reasons I always own my own router. Although, my cable company is pretty good even when you use their own equipment.

    @chris I've been seeing some videos of people having an LED lamp bar over their monitors. Supposed to help with eye care with the bonus of better lighting for the webcam. Personally, I think I would find it too distracting.

    With the help of a truck driver, we got Leela delivered to our hometown in Ohio, from Texas. For those of you keeping score, that's 2 campers down. Now we just have to get Charlie back from Vermont this summer, and we'll be all-set. PS: Leela is SO DIRTY. WOW.

    bryanruby,
    @bryanruby@me.dm avatar

    @alexstandiford I've never that that full time, but for the past 20 years, we spent a lot of time on extended vacations and weekends in a travel trailer. Saw the country in ways we couldn't have through hotels/motels. Just sold it to allow some motorcycle traveling time. But I do miss the trailer life and hope to return to it after retirement with a vengeance.

    I wouldn't be surprised if Trump said something like: "It's easy to confuse Nikki and Nancy! After all, they're both women. Well, maybe not Nikki ..."

    bryanruby,
    @bryanruby@me.dm avatar

    @lauren It's amazing that Republicans that were so quick to use Senator John Fetterman's as a stroke as reason to not vote for him want to completely ignore Trump's mental decline.

    bryanruby,
    @bryanruby@me.dm avatar

    @lain_7 @lauren I suspect Trump would require a "loyalty pledge" despite what the Constitution says. But yes, the Senate could delay confirmation which they should on those that would put Trump before the Constitution and the Country.

    Plex is adding their own branded store for purchasing movies and tv shows.

    As someone that bought a lifetime Plex membership a lifetime ago at bargain bin pricing, even I am considering a swim over to Jellyfish at this point.

    Waiting to hear if there is a way to opt out of it.

    @box464 I'm not a Plex user as I don't store video locally. However, for music I use #Roon which does a nice blend of locally stored digital files and music streaming services (Tidal or Qobuz). Looks like Plex is modeling their business over something similar to Roon...and that's not all bad in my opinion.

    rolle, to fediverse
    @rolle@mementomori.social avatar

    My experience so far with microblogging services:

    Threads: I'm in a wrong party and don't know what to say. I feel awkward, everyone is so happy with their gym selfies. Everyone asking endless questions and asking things from the algorithm. Lots of people use it like Instagram, every post is a selfie with a meaningless caption. Some are copy-pasting the same sentence over and over again for each line. Endless quote-post memes... What the fuck is this shit I don't even...

    Bluesky: A Twitter clone, but still very barebones. Notifications are still not working, there are no hashtags and I don't find any relevant content to me in any of the feeds. It's mostly Facebook-like what's up in life, furry scene and AI photos. No news, no tech/web scene, no nothing. Not to mention it's still invite-only and won't support ActivityPub (yeah I know the reasoning behind that but for me it's mostly bullshit, I look forward to trying bridgy fed).

    Mastodon and the Fediverse: Here I'm at home on my own server. Most content, most features. A community is friendly but has also lots of nitpicking, some angry dudes. Still the most safest, most healthy and most customized, but somehow the most hated network elsewhere. "Too techie", they say. "Too difficult", they say. "No algorithm", they say.

    Nostr: Kinda promising, but way too obscure, strange and even techier than Mastodon. Too much crypto shit.

    Well, that's that. Sometimes I feel like Internet is ruined. But I believe in the open social web movement and I want to see this grow.

    In no other place I can write a status update as freely as this, as long as this or with a low bar as this. I LIKE this 100%. The same can't be said in those other places I'm experimenting with out of curiosity. There I'm the weird kid. Here I feel like myself.

    #Fediverse #SocialWeb #SocialMedia #Bluesky #Threads #Some #Mastodon

    bryanruby,
    @bryanruby@me.dm avatar

    @rolle I've been trying out all the micro-blogging services too and so far Mastodon is my favorite. I will say though I'm getting more and more impressed with Bluesky the more I have been using it as it evolves. One other platform you may want to consider is Spoutible as it's probably the least hostile of all platforms out there.

    In the end, I think ActivityPub wins helping bridge services like WordPress, Mastodon, and even Threads all together in the fediverse.
