Steamboat Willie / Mickey Mouse went into the public domain 5 months ago, but Disneyland has not shut, nor has the company's stock has become worthless.

Is the zealousness of the copyright cabal worth the ill will and societal damage?

A reason housing is such a problem now? 1/2

bank crisis of 2008--

fed response was to bail out banks not homeowners. how?

fed lends money to banks at 0%--
and does it for years,

new trillions of $ thereby lent out to banks ("increase liquidity!")--

banks "put money to work" by lending for interest of a few % over inflation ("recapitalize the banks!") --

that new interest is 10's of billions a year, money that was not sucked up in interest before, but from where?

1/2

brewsterkahle,
@brewsterkahle@mastodon.archive.org avatar

continuing... 2/2

largest asset class to lend to is real estate, therefore

10's of billions more $ are sucked out in new mortgages, renters...

10's of billions more $ goes from cash poor to cash rich.

10's of billions more $ generally from younger to older,

Making the rich 10's of billions richer, poor poorer.

We have a rent and affordability crisis.

--btw: i'm not an economist, but is this wrong?

brewsterkahle,
@brewsterkahle@mastodon.archive.org avatar

@publictorsten

not sure it is totally fine because the problem with this is that it is sucking more than it used to.

and that translates into more money in mortgage (via higher price of houses) and higher rents.

we are feeling this all over the US and many other places.

I think that it is "more", but is it enough "more" to make a big difference?

By this calculation it is thousands of dollars more per family per year-- I think that might be enough to be a problem.

But most consumed primary energy is lost after conversion.

The problem to solve is a lot smaller than primary energy suggests.

"No one buys [their] books" a report on the big publisher's court testimony.

wow:

"The DOJ’s lawyer collected data on 58,000 titles published in a year and discovered that 90 percent of them sold fewer than 2,000 copies and 50 percent sold less than a dozen copies. "

Yet, they sue to make sure libraries can not buy them (above and beyond copyright). They changed the laws so copyright lasts 95 years-- so no one can get to them.

good stewards of our cultural legacy?

https://www.elysian.press/p/no-one-buys-books

brewsterkahle,
@brewsterkahle@mastodon.archive.org avatar

@billseitz

he seems to say 50% of the published books sell fewer than 12 books per year, maybe 99/year. Thank you for pointing this out.

But the problem stands that these ebooks are not for sale at any price, and are kept from library collections.

big publisher's saying they are like venture capitalists of silicon valley mistreats our cultural legacy -- old books are valuable. unlike dissolved companies.

Locking up books does not help the public. it is simple-- sell ebooks.
