The effect of elevation, latitude, and plant richness on robustness of pollination networks at a global scale ($)
https://botany.fyi/vc3E8N

Wang et al analyzed a total of 87 networks of plant-pollinator interactions on 47 sites from 14 countries. They conducted a piecewise structural equation model to examine the direct and indirect effects of elevation, latitude, and plant richness on the network robustness.

Found out why I've been tired all week.

botanyone, to random
@botanyone@botany.social avatar

There'll be some experiments here this week. Probably.

I'm going to experiment with 250 word blog posts, and see if they can also be posted direct to Mastodon, BlueSky and Threads as threads. They'll also go to LinkedIn, but won't need threading there.

The aim will be to see if people prefer that to a link off site. On the one hand you won't have to click out of the app to read a short blog post. On the other, a string of five posts together might be annoying.

botanyone,
@botanyone@botany.social avatar

@wordshaper That's a sensible suggestion, but I have a managed hosting service through masto host. I deliberately chose that as playing around with the code could be a big time sink for me.

It's definitely something for me to bear in mind for the future though. Thanks for letting me know.

Myrtle rust is devastating Australian forests. A new high-tech spray holds out hope for native trees
https://botany.fyi/aQkl5f?b1

Around a decade ago, an invasive fungal disease called myrtle rust reached Australia and began to spread like a plague through certain plants. The disease affects plants of the Myrtaceae family, which includes eucalypts, paperbarks and lilly pillies, and makes up 10% of Australian plant biodiversity.

Chen et al. combined bioinformatics and physiological approaches to compare some of the key traits that may differentiate between xerophytes (naturally drought-tolerant plants) and mesophytes (to which the majority of the crops belong).

Why Pineapples Are Sweeter When Picked During The Day, According To Science
https://botany.fyi/DW9L2P?b1

It turns out that pineapples go through mood swings just like the rest of us. While they, of course, don't experience emotions like we do, the time of day you pick one of these fruits has a big impact on the flavor. If you harvest your pineapple during the day, you're much more likely to get a sweeter bite, while at night, there's a higher chance your snack will end up tasting sour.

Farmers Are Turning To An Ancient Practice To Improve Agriculture

https://botany.fyi/Z54M1j?b1

From ancient Egypt to medieval England, cultivating one or more crops in the same field was common practice among many farmers for thousands of years. However, in the last century, food producers largely stopped ‘intercropping’ and moved towards an industrial type of agriculture – a shift that contributed to 34% of the world’s farmland being degraded today.

Cessation of grazing causes biodiversity loss and homogenization of soil food webs (OA)

https://botany.fyi/M5xD7D?b1

There is widespread concern that cessation of grazing in historically grazed ecosystems is causing biotic homogenization and biodiversity loss. Schrama et al. used 12 montane grassland sites along an 800 km north–south gradient across the UK, to test whether cessation of grazing affects local α- and β-diversity of below-ground food webs.

Tiny Forest at Lyndhurst Community of Faith Church may have big benefits

https://botany.fyi/6n4mZp?b1

When I visited the beautiful native pollinator garden at the Lyndhurst Community of Faith Church, described in a column last August, congregant John McCumber told me that the church was also planting a “Tiny Forest.” I had never heard the term before and imagined an oversized fairy garden with miniature trees and perhaps a pony ride.

‘Pocket Prairie’ project restores native Nebraska plants to unused spaces

Making use of bland, empty spaces. That’s what an Omaha organization is doing around the metro, with hopes to expand across other parts of the Great Plains. “Pocket Prairies” is what they’re called, and the idea was born and bred by Grasslands Unlimited, an organization whose goal is restoring and protecting grassland ecosystems.

Cameroon Says Nigerian Refugee Trees Reduce Conflicts

Officials in northern Cameroon say conflicts over food, water and other resources have greatly declined due to the planting of about half-a-million trees in and around a refugee camp. U.N. officials and rights groups visited the area to collect success stories on reforestation projects that also reduce climate shocks to share during the upcoming COP 28 climate conference.

Beavers Are Ecosystem Engineers, But Hungry Wolves Limit How Far They Influence

https://botany.fyi/eU5rlm?b1

The study found that wolves are more likely to predate the beavers that travel further away from the water on the longer feeding trails. Because of this, the wolves are directly affecting the forest structure by limiting how far the beavers travel away from the water to fell trees and forage.
